Cooperative learning involves students working together in small groups to accomplish
shared goals. (gillies, r., 2007)
Formal cooperative learning consists of students working together, for one class period
over several weeks to achieve shared learning goals and complete jointly specific tasks and
assignments. (Johnson, Johnson & Holubic, 2008).
Cooperative learning is a pedagogical practice that has attracted much attention over the
last three decades because of a large body of research that indicates students gain both
academically and socially when they have opportunities to interact with others to
accomplish shared goals (Johnson & Johnson, 2002; Lou et al., 1996; Slavin,1996).
In so doing, they learn to use language to explain new experiences and realities which, in
turn, help them to construct new ways of thinking and feeling (Barnes, 1969; Mercer,
1996).
when students work cooperatively together, they show increased participation in group
discussions, demonstrate a more sophisticated level of discourse, engage in fewer
interruptions when others speak, and provide more intellectually valuable contributions
(Gillies, 2006;Webb & Farivar, 1999).

Permainan sangat memotivasi dan menghibur, dan mereka dapat memberikan siswa
pemalu lebih mempunyai kesempatan mengekspresikan pendapat mereka dan perasaan
mereka (Hansen 1994:118).
Lee Su Kim (1995: 35) Menyatakan bahwa ada persepsi umum bahwa belajar harus lebih
sungguh-sunguh dan bersatu dengan alam, dan jika sesorang sedang merasa senang dan
ada sedikit tertawa, lalu itu dikatakan bukan benar-benar belajar. Justru ini yang disebut
salah konsep. Sangat mungkin untuk belajar suatu bahasa sambil menikmati kesenangan
diri, yang paling tepat cara ini adalah melalui permainan.

Aydan Ersoz (2000 :1) Berpendapat bahwa pembelajaran bahasa merupakan suatu tugas
yang berat dan kadang-kadang dapat membuat pembelajar jadi frustasi. Usaha yang
konstan diperlukan untuk memahami, menghasilkan dan memanipulasi bahasa target.
permainan pilihan sangat berarti bagi siswa karena permainan itu kesempatan kepada
siswa untuk memperaktekkan keterampilan bahasa target. Permainan sangat memotivasi
siswa karena mereka menyenangkan dan menantang.
Game was teaching media,which could be used to teach vocabulary effectively. Game
provided an enjoyable way for teaching words and gave the students an opportunity the
use the words in a memorable context (ODell and Head, 2003). Game also promoted an
interactive communication between the students and their teacher, the students
critical thingking, their active role in the learning process, and their ability to solve
problems.In additional,game could stimulate the students for learning process in the
real situation and facilitate the students to speak and communicate actively (Talak,
2010)
Snakes and ladders or chutes and ladders was a classical board game. It was played
between 2 or more players on a playing board with numbered grid squares. On a
certain squared on grid a numbers of ladders connecting two together , and a
number of snake also connecting squares together (Frederick, 2004).
Snakes and Ladders game was a simple board with counters and dice. According to
(Kusrini, 2012) some procedures were used for teaching vocabulary with the game.
Firstly, the writer prepared the equipment of the game such as a dice and a board for
each group. Secondly, the writer explained the rule of the game. Thirdly, the writer
demonstrated the game with some students in front of the class. Finally, the writer
divided the students into some group.
