Lesson 1: Getting to know the Solar System


Motivation:
Introduce topic and what the solar
system is
Allow students to explore the National
Geographic website
Watch provided videos in pairs
Lesson structure:
In pairs use iPad apps
Solar Walk, 3D Solar System for Kids and
Solar System 3D to research the planets
Create a mind map using coggle.it with 34 facts per planet
Then upload link to the Padlet on weebly
Conclusion:
Go around class asking what facts they
found the most interesting

Motivation:
Ask students to recall favourite facts
from previous lesson
Lesson structure:
In pairs create a mindmap on Coggle, to
brainstorm ideas of what characteristics
and features you would want your own
planet to have
Use Extreme Planet Makeover to make
their own planet by using same features
Then start on Smore flyer- where
students will advertise their planet to tell
other students why they should live on
their planet
Conclusion:
Ask some pairs what features they chose
for their planets
