Who needs it and why?

Clients
Under CDM the client has a duty to appoint
competent designers and/or contractors
You
In this current financial climate, it is in your
best interest to be seen as the most qualified /
experienced members of the design team.

How is competency assessed?

CDM 2007
Regulation 4 - Clients must ensure that designers,
contractors and other team members that they
propose to engage are competent
Membership of a relevant professional institution, for
example CIBSE; ICE; IMechE; IStructE; RIBA; RICS;
CIAT; CIOB,is a strong indicator that a designer
has the necessary task knowledge and an ability to
recognise the health and safety implications of
their design work.

Why Should I?

For Registered Engineers:

It is easier to gain promotion or a new job
Their pay compares favourably with non-registered engineers
and increasingly against other qualified professionals
They have greater influence within their organisation and
industry
Their engineering credentials are respected in most parts of the
world
They have access to a network of similarly qualified and
experienced experts in their field - through their Institution

Why Should I?

For their employers:

Increasingly, tendering or post-tender contract compliance requires
key members of the project team to have professional registration.
Increased technical credibility with customers
Assurance that the employee has satisfied a rigorous assessment of
their engineering competence
Confirmation that the engineering credentials being claimed are
actually held
Assurance that the employee is keeping up-to-date with professional
codes of conduct and has the means to do this
A means to satisfy requirements of the Quality Management Systems
standard ISO 9001:2008
