Department of Instrumentation Technology

Our Vision
Instrumentation engineering has gone from the simple feedback circuits of Edward
Lee and Evans, through the rocket science of Maxwell and GE, to the astonishing
complexity of the NASAs Instrumentation and Automation system. As this progress
conveys us into the future with new and exciting engineering challenges, BITs
Instrumentation engineers will be ready to meet those challenges. This is our singular
vision and we take great pride in the contributions that our graduates have made and
will make to instrumentation engineering, now and in the future.

Our Mission
Our mission is to provide students with a broad and exceptional education that
prepares them to excel in the field of Instrumentation engineering and to become
creative leaders and mentors in a world which is moving towards complete
automation in industry and production technologies.

It is to lead responsively and creatively in the discovery of new knowledge and

transforming inventions and technologies in a field which is still in its early
stages
To create a better future for all people through the application of innovative
ideas and resources and the solution of important and complex global problems.
To develop the intellectual capacity, critical thinking, creativity, and problem
solving ability of its students so that they may become honorable, contributing,
and forward-thinking members of the science and engineering community.

Program Education Objectives

The Instrumentation Technology program at BIT is designed to prepare students for
continued learning and successful careers in industry, government, academia and
consulting. Our alumni are expected to:

Apply their engineering knowledge, critical thinking and problem solving skills in
professional engineering fields of Instrumentation, automation and process
control.

Practice instrumentation engineering in a broad range of industries.

Pursue advanced education, research and development, and other creative and
innovative efforts in science, engineering, and technology, as well as other
professional careers.

Conduct themselves in a responsible, professional, and ethical manner.

Participate as leaders in their fields of expertise and in activities that support

service and economic development nationally and throughout the world.

Program Specific Objectives

Graduates of the Instrumentation Engineering program at BIT will attain:

An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering for real

world problem solving.

An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and

interpret data.

An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs

within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political,
ethical, health, and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability

An ability to function on multidisciplinary teams

An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems

An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility

An ability to communicate effectively

The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering

solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context.

Curriculum Gap
The shortage of appropriately skilled labor across many industries is emerging as a
significant and complex challenge to India's growth and future. According to
NASSCOM, each year over 3 million graduates and post-graduates are added to the
Indian workforce. However, of these only 25 percent of technical graduates considered
employable. Hence, what we have today is a growing skills gap reflecting the slim
availability of high-quality college education in India. Our department intends to
bridge this gap using the following tools.

Partnerships between the industry and academia.

Frequent visits to corporate houses which help to get students accustomed to

the corporate atmosphere.

More focus on internships, workshops and real world problem solving than on
theoretical knowledge.

Curriculum to match industry requirements.

Developing a shared jobs model with recurring participation for specific jobs and
their requirements.
