Orange/Brain Surgery

Ms. Markham

As a team, you will need to complete the following surgical steps and answer the
questions about the parts of the brain and each parts function. When you are done, you
will need to show me the finished product. Be sure to answer all of the questions in
complete sentences.
Surgical Team: Margot Meyerkorth and Hibah Al-Sahouri
Checklist of items:
Orange, knife, 2 Sugar babies, Mike & Ike, Swedish Fish, orange candy slices, strawberry
Twizzler, Licorice Twizzler, Sour Brite Crawler, gummy worm, M&M, Lemon Head, brown paper,
paper plate, 4 colored toothpicks (cut in half) and 4 brown toothpicks
Surgical Procedure
1. Carefully peel the skull from the brain. Do not puncture the white membrane, the
meninges, that protect the brain and spinal cord.
2. You are now looking at the CEREBRAL CORTEX. Why is the cerebral cortex so important?
The cerebral cortex is so important because it helps with control and processing information.
3. Using the plain toothpicks, make two "eyes" with the Sugar babies. Be sure to put them
on the "end" of the brain. How do the eyes see in relation to the hemisphere of the
brain?
The eyes see in relation to the hemisphere of the brain by the right eye processing stuff to
the left side of the brain and the left eye processing stuff to the right side of the brain.
4. With your knife, make a small incision, separating the cortex into two hemispheres.
Remove a few sections to expose the inner parts of the brain.
What are the specialized functions of the RIGHT HEMISPHERE?
The right hemisphere sees pictures (creative side).
What are the specialized functions of the LEFT HEMISPHERE?
The specialized functions of the left hemisphere is logics.

5. Using your knife, carefully cut the CORPUS CALLOSUM without cutting the brain in half.
Using the black licorice, create a new corpus callosum. What is the job of the corpus
callosum?
The corpus callosum connects both hemispheres of the brain together.
6. Using the Mike & Ike (Reticular formation) & Swedish Fish (Medulla) attach a Medulla
and Pons on your brain stem (use a brown toothpick to attach).
What is the role of the pons?
The role of the pons is to keep you alert.
What is the role of the medulla?
The role of the medulla is to control heartbeat and breathing.

________
What is the role of the Reticular Formation?
The role of the reticular formation is to control arousal.
7. Directly above the brain stem, attach the Candy Orange slice for the CEREBELLUM. It
should be on either side of the brain stem (use a brown toothpick to attach). What is the
function of the Cerebellum?
The function of the cerebellum is to coordinate voluntary movement and blanance and
supports memories of such.
8. Now divide the brain into LOBES. Mark the following using half of a toothpick:
OCCIPITAL LOBE - Green Function
The function of the occipital lobe is for vision.
FRONTAL LOBE- Red - Function
The function of the frontal lobe is for speaking and muscle movements.
PARIETAL LOBE - Yellow - Function
The function of the parietal lobe is the function cortex.
TEMPORAL LOBE - Blue - Function
The function of the temporal lobe is the auditory senses.
* Remember to mark the lobes in BOTH hemispheres*
9. Using the Red Twizzler (MOTOR CORTEX) and (SENSORY CORTEX), attach the Motor
cortex and sensory cortex. You will have to peel the Twizzler so that the strips are
represented in both hemispheres.
What are their respective functions?
Their respective functions are the motor cortex controls the left hemisphere controls the
right side of the brain and the sensory cortex receives input from the body's right side.
10. Using the Sour Brite Crawler place the HIPPOCAMPUS inside the brain. What is the
function of the hippocampus?
The hippocampus is linked to memory.
11. Using the M&M place the AMYGDALA in the brain. What is its function?
The amygdala is linked to memory.
12. Using the Gummy worm, place the HYPOTHALAMUS in the brain. What is its function?
The hypothalamus controls maintenance functions such as eating, helps govern endocrine
system, linked to emotion and reward.
13. Using the Lemon Head, place the THALAMUS in the brain. What is its function?
The thalamus relays messages between lower brain centers and cerebral cortex.

Once you have completed the surgery, I will need to look at it and record a photo. Please
notify me when you are ready. Upon my approval you may eat your brain and its parts.

PLEASE CLEAN UP YOUR MESS AND TURN IN THIS COMPLETED SHEET
