What
Information Literacy Standards
Standard 1: The student who is information literate accesses information efficiently
and effectively
Standard 2: The student who is information literate evaluates information critically
and competently.

appreciates literature and other creative expressions of information.

ELA 3: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for critical analysis and
evaluation

How demo, hands-on, presentations

Context
Demonstration in classroom and library, computer room, and hands-on assignments
in computer lab.

Procedure
Part 1 (3/14/08)
• Motivation: show tunnel book as what the end product will be
• Presentation on what the project will be and the Big6 research method.
• Assignment: Understanding of assignment criteria and research method.

Part 2 (3/17/08)
• Presentation on Researching on the Internet /BuILder for assignment
o Note: Use of Rianna song to show copyright
o BuILder Location: www.informationliteracy.org/builder/view/1661/
• Review game for information learned this class period and also the previous
class period to check understanding and retention
• Assignment: answer questions on research correctly and be active
participants in the information

Part 3 (3/18/08)
• Internet research using buILder and portaportal (all required weblinks will be
located on these two sources)
• Students will be given a packet of information they must gather during this
class period.
• Mr. Sniper and I will circulate around students helping them use the websites
to find the required information
o Note: I specifically used questions that would force students to use
more than one resources
• Purpose: For students to get an idea of what their state has to offer

Part 4 (3/25, 3/26, 3/28, 3/31, 4/1, 4/2, 4/4)


• Students will come down to the library in small groups (5-6) to continue
research on at least ten interesting facts on their state using the resources
they have used previously.

Part 5 (3/26, 3/28, 3/31, 4/1, 4/2, 4/4)


• As students complete part 4 they will then locate open source images on
www.creativecommons.org for each of the ten facts they found.
• Students will write script for commercial in groups of 5 and practice in groups
until they are to record the commercial.

Part 6 (4/7)
• Using the pictures students found they will construct tunnel books using
instructions given to them by my demonstration of construction
o Students will be required to glue book together and fold the outside of
the book
• Mr. Sniper and I will circulate to aid those students who need it.
• Books will be displayed in the classroom or library.
• Presentation of iMovie software and editing tools.

Part 7 (4/8-4/12)
• Record commercials and edit in iMovie
• Watch commercials on last day of project

Evaluation
• Research notes (10 facts, 10 questions)
• Successful location of pictures (10)
• Successful Construction of tunnel book
