The story "Love is a fallacy" is about an intelligent guy who had a friend named Petey who was the

opposite of him.Petey was a very dumb guy not like him.The intelligent guy likes a lady named Polly
who Petey also admires. So he used his intelligende over Petey. That time racoon coats were
popular,so he had a deal with Petey. He made him choose between the racoon coat or Polly.Being a
dumb guy,he chose the racon coat.So the intellegent guy seized his chance. He then did some actions
to be closer to Polly.Polly was a very beautiful lady but a very stupid one too.So he did everything to
make her a perfect partner for him.He asks her out to teeach her about fallacies. He explained to her
all the types of fallacies. And with his patience,he had succeeded on making her knowledgeable about
fallacies.
He then decided to express his feelings towards her but each time he tries to,Polly can spot a right
fallacy for it.She kept on using the fallacies in every sentence he gives in expressing his love.In the
end,Polly admitted that she can't be his girl because she has already said yes to someone. To Petey!!
And just because of one reason, because Petey has a racoon coat.

A young man at age eighteen who was very smart, acute, and astute. He described his powerful brain
as a dynamo. He is studying at a law school and he is living with his roommate named Petey Bellows.
Petey was attracted to the latest fashion trends like what the Big Men on campus wear. He heard Petey
mumble and Petey wants a Raccoon Coat just like the buig men on campus wear. But he doesn't
want a racoon coat because he do not feel comfortable wearing it. But there is one thing that Petey
has, he is the first one to take for a date, Polly Espy. She is the most elegant and the most gorgeous
girl he have so far seen. The way she eats and walks has the word elite on it. She was all he ever
wanted, and all an intellectual guy like him would ever need.
He started to date Polly. They went to the movies, ate at a restaurant, and then he guided her home.
He thought He really underestimated his task. It was easy dating Polly yet as hard as understanding
her. She was so oppisite to him, she is so unintelligent. He had to teach her to be really fit for him as a
wife. The next night he introduced to her the world of logic. She didn't seem to understand what that
was about, but she was interested as well. Then he thought her about the fallacies of logic. She
seemed to respond to every fallacy he introduced, just not the respond I wanted. She didn't seem to
understand all I was saying. But then, I tried to keep my patience. She'll learn. I taught her the fallacies
of Dicto Simpliciter, Hasty Generalization,Post Hoc, Contradictory Premises, Ad Misericordiam,
Hypothesis Contrary to Fact. There was the time when he taught her about the only fallacy she
correctly analyzed, the Poisoning the Well. She perfectly responded to the problem he gave her this
time. That time, he was already filled with hope again. After the fifth night, He have made the perfect
girl. Then, he tried on putting their dates from intellectual to romantic.

When he finally had the courage to tell Polly his feelings that he loved him,he was shocked to the way
Polly replied to his words, that is, in a way that she make use of the fallacies. He told her that he
doesn't have to apply the fallacies all the time in because these fallacies are only taught inside the a
four-walled room but Polly still continued to reply him on those fallacies. Then he asked her directly if
she'd accept his love. But he was surprised when she refused, and the reason is because she
promised Petey she'll be his that afternoon. He was furious, and I asked her the question that would.
"Why do you like Petey Belows?" Her answer was simple. "Because he has a raccoon coat.

This short story is about two roommates, who need each other. One favors materialistic objects, and wishes
he had a raccoon coat, and the other favors looks, and beauty, and wishes he had a certain girl to go steady
with. The main character studying at a law school, cant help but think about who his wife will be one day,
hoping it will be Polly Espy. Polly Espy is well known by his roommate, and after bribing him with the
raccoon coat he asked to take Polly on a date. Polly doesnt have that much intelligence so he makes it his
mission to teach her a few lessons. After going on five dates, and asking her to go steady with him, Polly
denies him by using all the knowledge he had taught her. At first he laughed at it, until she mentioned that
the reason why they couldnt go steady was, because she promised his roommate Petey, she would with
him. The story ends by him asking Polly to explain why she should go steady with Petey, and her reply
was, Hes got a raccoon coat. Since the story did ended on this note. We cant help but to make our own
conclusion.
I believe after this, he was feeling hurt, and betrayed by his roommate. He had made Petey a deal, and that
deal was to exchange the raccoon coat , for Polly. In the end Petey ended up winning, because he got both
Polly, and the raccoon coat. Although it wasnt a competition between them, Petey betrayed him, by not
following through with their deal. This story teaches us the lesson about materialistic objects, and true
friendship. It shows that some people would risk certain things in their life, for an object.

Have you read the story Love is a Fallacy by Max Schuilman? Well,
if you havent read it yet, heres a summary:
The story is set in one of the Universities in the United States of
America. It is about a guy who wanted to have this girl named Polly.
Polly was a beautiful girl, inside and out. Polly by then was dating
the main characters friend and roommate, Petey. At first Petey
wanted a raccoon coat because all of the Big Men or should I say the
well known people in their school were wearing raccoon coats. He was
dying to have one of these raccoon coats. That was when the narrator
and main character thought of a way wherein he could give his friend
the simple thing he wanted and that he could have Polly. They made a
deal with each other that if he finds a raccoon coat, Petey would do
anything in return. After their discussion and deal, the narrator
set off to his home to spend the weekend where he remembered that
his father had one of those coats that Petey was dying to have. He
found the coat in one of the trunks in their house and then placed
it in his bag ready for him to give to Petey.
When he returned to school after the weekend, he showed Petey the

raccoon coat and asked for the thing in return. Petey was kind of
shocked by what his friend wanted. He wanted to have Peteys girl,
Polly. He had second thoughts looking at the raccoon coat and away
for it but at last, after thinking several times, he agreed to what
his roommate wanted. The next day, the main character asked Polly
out. He knew that Polly was bit a slow learner. He proved this fact
when they dated. He brought her to a restaurant and the only thing
she said was that the food was marvelous. He brought her to the
cinema and all she said was that the movie was terrific. This was
when he thought of a way wherein he could teach Polly some things he
had known in their class in logic, fallacies. They had sessions
every night under an oak tree and after some time, he told Polly
what he really felt. To his surprise, Polly used all the things she
learned about fallacies just to tell him that she never liked him.
He argued with her so many times but then, he couldnt do anything.
At last, she said that she liked Petey. He was in a rage and asked
why she liked Petey. That not so smart guy when he was far better
than him. All she said was because Petey had one of these raccoon
coats.

Reaction on the Story: "Love is a Fallacy"

The author of the story, Max Schulman, has a different taste when it comes to writing. He
has a different style. I sort of liked the story because of the dofferent twist but I also sort
of didn't understand parts of it. I think the speaker was too selfish. Selfish, in a way
wherein he wanted to have Polly for his own or personal reason. He wanted the girl
because he thought she was fit to become a lawyer's wife. I also thought that the story
was a little bit funny because in the end, when the speaker asked Polly why she liked
Petey, she answered because of his raccoon coat!!!! I mean, she was stupid or dumb
because her only reason for liking the guy was only beacuse of the furry, smelly and old
coat! But digging deeper, I truly understood the story. It speaks of how life and love can
be a fallacy. Fallacy in a way that sometimes we think we love that person but little do we
know that he or she is not the person we want to have. It's as if we're in a race to find out
who could be the person we could share moments all throughout our life. I also learned
about different kinds of fallacies or false ideas.
I was having a lot of fun reading the story. And in fact, I could recommend my friends and
relatives to read the story because we can also geta lot of lessons in it. Part of it about
fallacies and part of it about how life and love takes place in our world. One lesson I've
learned is that we should not judge anyone everyone directly. And that also is a fallacy
and that's what we call as poisoning of the well. According to Melanie Marquez,"Do not
judge the book by its cover." Sometimes we directly view a person through his/her outer
and intellectual abilities. Like what the speaker thought to Petey was dumb unlike him in
fact Polly Epsey like him.
As I have said earlier, I sort of didn't understand the story. It was a bit hard for me to
understand it especially that I am not really fond of reading books and stories. I find it
boring kaseh (not my type..). I was often confused on how the story went or on how the
characters in the story do their conversations. I was able to understand the words in the
story because the author used simple words so that the readers will not get a little too
confused already that his story was already confusing. I sort of didn't understand same of

the character's personalities especially that of Polly Epsey. She was a bit dumb at first and
then I was shocked in the end when she sounded like she was that smart. Oh well...
I think the story was amazing and entertaining in some way especially when you first read
the title. The title did draw me to read the story finding out it wasn't like those stories I
and my other classmates read in Tagalog novels.. Hahaha.. Actually, the title speaks
louder than the content of the story.

An author named Max Schulman wrote the story on "Love is a Fallacy". The story doesn't
focus on love as a romantic thing especially for those young readers, but he made the
meaning of love among the characters as a false idea. Here's a summary of the story:
I was a student of one of the universities in the United States. One day, I sa my friend and
roommate Petey Belows in our shared room thinking about a raccoon coat. He said he
wanted to have one. He badly wanted that raccoon coat because all the big men in the
campus wore it. He said he'll do anything in exchange of the raccoon coat. I thought of
my father's raccoon coat which he hasn't worn lately. Thinking of that Petey would give
and do anything just to get the raccoon coat, I immediately thought of the ideal girl I
wanted to have to be my bride. She was Polly Epsey, the girl that Petey has been dating
lately. Polly is a very beautiful girl, inside and out. The next day, I went home to my home
town. I found my father's raccoon coat on a trunk in the attic. When I went back to school,
I surprised Petey with the raccoon coat I brought. He was so happy seeing the thing. Not
forgetting about our deal, I asked him to give me the girl he's been dating: Polly. Indeed
Petey was at first shocked of what I asked in exchange. But later on, he made up his mind
and called it a deal. The night after, I met with Polly and had dinner with her. We watched
movies and then bid each other goodbye. Upon going home, I thought of the date I had
earlier. It was as if Polly really was not the intellectual type of person. The next night, I
thought her a certain topic in logic in which I, as a law student was also taking: Fallacy.
Every night I taught her fallacies like poisoning the well and so much more. Days passed
by and we had a great time every night under the oak tree. We've finished discussing
about the fallacies that I thought her, she used what I thought her on fallacies. Every
excuse I make, she defended herself with the fallacies. I went back to our room with a
rage. You know why? Because instead of liking me, she liked my roommate Petey Belows!
Never did I know that Polly liked Petey because he had a raccoon coat.
That's the end of my summary. I hoped you understood the summary I made. Hope this
teaches everyone of us a lesson. That when you love, it's not important whether the
person is smart or dumb, as long as you are sure with your feelings for each other and
that you're happy together. Love doesn't only occur because you like that person for your
personal gain, but because were meant to be. And what makes lovea fallacy? It's the fact
that we say we love the person even though it was just some kond of admiration or in our
