For over forty years, Harrington Industrial Plastics, Inc. has been dedicated to the simple premise of providing
our customers with a better way of handling corrosive liquids. This premise, together with our commitment to
redefine customer service, built Harrington into the largest distributor of industrial plastic piping in the United
States.
O ver the years, w e have constantly sought to provide new and better products as they becom e available and are consistent w ith our goalof
selling the best at the m ost econom icalcost.
INTRODUCTION
Engineers m ust carefully select m aterials for vessels, piping, pum ps and gaskets w hen designing system s for handling corrosive chem icals.
W ith a relatively recent aw areness of environm entalissues, engineersjobs take on a new em phasis.
D esigning a system for a specific application usually involves referring to several sources on piping, tanks, pum ps and elastom er seals. U ntil
the advent of synthetics, such as plastics, choices w ere lim ited to various grades of m etal and alloys. N ow the field is greatly expanded. In this
Chem icalResistance guide, H arrington has provided a single resource of non-m etallic and high-purity steelproducts based on m anufacturers'
recom m endations and our ow n extensive experience. It is im portant to note that these tables should be used only as a guide. In all cases, a
physical test of the material under actual operating conditions is the only way to ensure the success of a particular material for
the application.
Engineers m ust take into account changes in internaland externaltem peratures and pressures, the affects of U V and m echanicalstresses.
Corrosion is defined as a gradualw earing aw ay. This is an accurate definition w hen dealing w ith m etals. W ith non-m etallic m aterials, such as
plastics, there is no rate of corrosion; they are either resistant or they deteriorate com pletely from a chem icalcom patibility stand point.
H ow ever, it m ust be rem em bered that m echanicalstresses w illlim it the usefullife of a piping system . In the case of poor chem icalresistance,
the failure of the piping system is hastened by m echanicalstress.
M etals tend to form a passive film on the surface to resist corrosion. Rust is a chem icalreaction that form s iron oxide on iron and steel.
Stainless steelis frequently treated w ith dilute nitric acid to produce an oxide layer on the surface w hich m akes the m aterialm ore resistant to
chem ical attack. W hile this surface layer slow s the corrosive degradation, m etals stillexhibit a penetration rate of the aggressive chem ical. An
A-rating for m etals m eans that the rate of penetration is < 2 m ils per year. A B-rating m eans that the rate is < 20 m ils per year and w ith a C rating, the rate can be estim ated at < 50 m ils per year.
Metals are listed as:
A = Excellent
B = Good, minor effect
C = Fair, needs further test
X = Unsuitable

H igher tem peratures generally hasten the corrosion reaction that results in m aterialfailure. In the tables provided here, tem peratures show n
are the m axim um that can be used for the specified plastic in the particular chem icalapplication. Plastics also have low tem perature lim itations
at w hich they m ay be used successfully. These tables do not address this issue. H arrington w elcom es your specific inquiries.
There are m any variables that contribute to the successful use of a particular m aterial, w hether it is m etalor plastic. There are m any different
plastic com pounds and form ulations. A m aterialdeterm ined suitable for a specific chem icalapplication does not m ean that the com pounds of
that plastic from allm anufacturers can be considered suitable. A dash m eans w e lack sufficient data.
Polyethylene tanks that are m anufactured w ith H D LPE (high density linear polyethylene) can handle applications to 130F. Polyethylene tanks
m anufactured w ith XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) can handle applications to 140F. It is im portant to note that tanks designed according to
ASTM D 1998 are designed based upon 73.4F. Snyder Industries exceeds ASTM D 1998 by designing its tanks based upon 100F (am bient
conditions).
As per ASTM D 1998, applications that w illexceed 73.4F, (100F for Snyder tanks), need to be designed based upon the specific chem ical
application. W hen designing tanks for applications above 100F, the m anufacturer needs to take into consideration the chem ical, its
concentration, and tem perature. (per ASTM D 1998-97 section 6.1.2 - Alltank hoop stress shallbe derated for service above 23 degrees
C/73.4F).

health standards are m et. W e strongly recom m end the users seek and adhere to m anufacturersor supplierscurrent instructions for handling
each m aterialthey use.

If severalconcentrations are given for a particular m aterial, the physicaldata, in general, relates to the pure product that is 100%
concentration.
In listing the m axim um use tem perature for each plastic type in a given chem ical, it can, in general, be assum ed that the resistance w ill be no
w orse at low er tem perature.
HOW TO SELECT THE CORRECT MATERIAL:
1. Locate the specific chem icalin the guide.
2. Select the m aterial w ith a m axim um use tem perature that m atches or exceeds the need. The H arrington philosophy has alw ays been to
suggest the least costly m aterialthat w illdo the job.
3. W here a m aterialor elastom er appears to be m arginal com pared to the requirem ents, place a callto our technical staff for additional
recom m endations.

EXAMPLES:
1. M ethylene chloride: in the table PVD F, H alar, or PTFE are the only m aterials suitable. C arbon steelw orks w ell for chlorinated hydrocarbons
of this sort, and that w ould be our choice unless there w as another reason to justify the higher cost of PVD F, PTFE, or H alar.
2. Sodium hypochlorite, 15% at 100F: PVC is good to 100F and is the least expensive of the m aterials available, how ever, you m ust use 724
CPVC cem ent for this and caustic applications.
3. For nitric acid, 40% at am bient tem perature: the tables recom m end either CPVC or polypropylene at 73F. In m ost cases, C PVC w illbe the
econom icalchoice. N ote that PVD F is rated for higher tem perature use.
N ote: The ratings show n for carbon and ceram ic pum p seals are approxim ate.
