In recent years, there has been a general awareness of the

importance of trees. A series of discoveries pointed to the fact that it
was trees that cleaned up the atmospheric pollution and also bring rain.
At first, people took these discoveries lightly. But, a decade later
people realized that either we planted more trees or we would have a
tough time in future. Then the whole world started numerous
campaigns until the message finally got through. If you want it to rain,
then you plant trees or else...

Trees are indeed useful to us. Human and animals breathe

oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. On the other hand, trees
breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. This process helps
to balance the amount of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the air.
Factories throughout the world caused more problem. When they
pollute the air with too much carbon dioxide, the trees clean it up and
return the oxygen to us. However, people start cutting trees to make
way for agriculture and development. Hence, industries kept on
increasing. This meant that we were producing more carbon dioxide
now because the trees which could neutralize the air, were getting
fewer and fewer.

Scientists warned us about the danger of cutting down trees

unnecessarily but few listened. In time, governments realized that they
had to act responsibly and started to understand the importance of
trees. Everyone feared the time when there would not be enough trees
to maintain the delicate balance in the air.

Trees also play an important role in the water cycle. They are
an important link in the process of evaporation. Trees actually help to
balance the water vapour in the air. This important ability could have
created awareness of how important trees are to us. When there was
less rain in many parts of the world, many people began to realize that
if they wanted rain, they had to leave the trees alone. A simple solution
is not to destroy the trees.
Almost two decades ago, Malaysia took tree-planting seriously.
A nationwide campaign made people more aware of trees and their
importance. Thousand of trees were planted all over the country and
green lungs were established. Acts were passed to protect the trees.
One such act was, if a person cut down a tree, he could be prosecuted
and fined. This act applied even if the tree belonged to you.
One other way the government helped to save the trees was to
make the first Sunday in November every year as the Tree Planting
Day. On this day, thousands of trees were planted throughout the
country.
The public was also educated. In schools, students learnt about
the importance of trees to the eco-system. Advertisements and
information through the mass media too helped spread the important
message that trees helped man. For example, when trees are cleared,
there are no roots to hold the soil firmly. This causes flooding. Besides,
insects, birds and animals lose their habitat. This could lead to an

imbalance food chain.

We have to save the trees which are part of our natural heritage
for future generations. Every small effort to save them counts. It is not
how much we do for the environment that is important but our attitude
towards the environment that really matters
