QUESTION 1 : WRITE A LESSON PLAN FOR A LESSON BASED ON THE ASSURE

MODEL. LESSON PLANNING SHOULD BE BASED ON THE TOPIC IN THE SUBJECT

OF YOUR SPECIALIZATION FOR TEACHING SESSIONS OF 3O MINUTES.

Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one.

Malcolm S. Forbes

Education has always been seen by scholars as to enable a man to become more
efficient, to achieve with increasing facility the legitimate goals of his life. It is also a social
institution that has been influenced mostly by technological developments. Thus, it makes a
perfect relevancy why a well-planned lesson is highly required in constructing appropriate
learning outcomes. A lesson plan is the instructors road map of what students need to learn
and how it will be done effectively during the class time. Before you plan your lesson, you
will first need to identify the learning objectives for the class meeting. Then, you can design
appropriate learning activities and develop strategies to obtain feedback on student learning.
Careful planning is required for effective instruction to take place. The ASSURE
model is an Instructional Systems Design (ISD) process that was modified to be used by
teachers in the regular classroom. The ISD process is one in which teachers and trainers
can use to design and develop the most appropriate learning environment for their students.
It can be used in writing lesson plans and in improving teaching and learning. This model is
designed to help teachers effectively integrate media/technology into the lesson or
presentation ; in order to help "assure" learning. There are six parts to the model which are :-

i)

ANALYSE LEARNERS
I emphasized on the level of the target group in which I have selected a mixed
ability class. The first step in planning is to specifically define your audience. I start
my lesson planning by looking at the learners in detail. The audience can be
analyzed in terms of their general characteristics (grade level, age) and specific entry
competencies (prior knowledge, skills, and attitudes about the topic, and learning
styles). Thus, in a mixed ability class, I am certain that all of my students can relate to
the topic of the day which is My Cousins, My Neighbour as I am definitely certain
that everyone in the classroom has at least a cousin and a neighbour. This prior
knowledge possesses by each student in my classroom can make all of them on the
same level of basic prior knowledge regarding the topic.
On the other hand, for the activities, students are required to listen carefully to the
sentence pattern from the audio recorded material and then read them out aloud with
teachers guide. This complements the mixed ability pupils with different learning
styles in which some of them might get more interested to learn with teaching aids
materials and therefore, the audio recorded material acts as an assist material to the
students. With the help of the audio recorded material, the appropriate learning
outcome which is to be able to speak with correct word stress could be achieved.

ii)

STATE OBJECTIVES
The next step in planning a lesson is to precisely state the objectives of the
lesson. In other words, learning objectives should be concrete and clear. Objectives
should be clearly stated in terms of the learners action based on the instruction given
by teacher. A good lesson plan should include 2-3 objectives and they are usually
consists of 4 basic parts ; intended audience, expected students behavior,
conditions under which performance is to be observed as well as the degree of
acceptable performance.
A statement of objectives help teachers to measure changes in behavior of pupils
and students should be aware of their teachers expectation. As for my lesson plan, I
stated that the objectives of my lesson is to enable pupils to match at least 3 out 5
based family members flash cards to the correct pictures and respond correctly 3 out
of 5 True / False replies in a worksheet. Thus, I decided to implement the activity of
labeling the family members using flash cards on the whiteboard. Students will
present their comprehension of the lesson based on the labeling on the whiteboard.
Next, to meet the learning objectives of responding correctly on the worksheet given

at least 3 out 5 True/False replies, the comprehension of pupils will be evaluated by

the reinforcement towards the end of the lesson.

iii)

SELECT METHOD, MEDIA AND MATERIALS.

When selecting technology usage for the classroom, it should be based on the
students characteristics and their learning styles. It is a main concern for teachers
when planning a lesson. Teacher should also studies the flexibility and accessibility of
the desirable technology based on the activity to be carried out. For example, during
my teaching and learning session, I will use LCD projector, laptop and speaker to
present the video song of The Family Finger on the induction. It is accessible and
flexible as the classroom provides the space for using projector.
Generally, there is no fixed method used in the process of teaching and learning.
Teacher can apply many types of methods such as simulation, role-play and
brainstorming. Brainstorming method is used for questioning and answering session.
During my lesson, I will ask questions to the students when I instruct them to label
the family members on the whiteboards by using flash cards. Drilling method will also
be used for my lesson plan when asking students to read aloud the sentence pattern
after listening to the audio recorded material.
On the other hand, media format refers to how forms of information displayed.
Media formats are such as photographs, slides, maps, drawings as well as the threedimensional materials. For my lesson plan, I will use photograph in the slide show,
three-dimensional materials which are the flash cards of the family members.
Selection of media should consider on objectives.student groups, student experience
and the form of feedback expected. Thus, as my students are mostly from the
background of urban family, they will have no problem in understanding how the
media in my lesson is used.

iv)

UTILIZE TECHNOLOGY,MEDIA AND MATERIALS.

In this model, after selecting the materials and media used, teacher should
now decide how the materials will be used by students. Teaching is simply high
theatre. Showmanship is part of the facilitators job. Teaching and learning should be
an experience not an ordeal. Therefore, teacher should provide the learning
experience. Before I start my lesson, I will first check my materials and make sure
they can work well so they will be no technical problem that can distract my lesson. I
will preview my materials which is the slide show of the pictures of family members.

v)

REQUIRE LEARNERS PARTICIPATION

When planning for a lesson, teacher should focuses on involving students
through the student-centered methods. Learners participation is also important when
teaching because students are expected to actively engage with the lesson. Learners
need to practice what they have learned in order to ensure an effective teaching. This
is why during my lesson, I will carry out the activity of listening and speaking which is
I will ask the students to listen the recorded audio materials and say them out aloud
according to what they have heard. It is a practice to emphasize on my focused skill
which is listening and speaking skills. During my induction, I will start the lesson by
involving the students with the brief idea of the lesson through singing the song. It will
make them feel participated even before the lesson take place.

vi)

EVALUATE AND REVISE

The main purpose for evaluation and revise is to prepare teacher for any
room of improvements for the lessons as well as some appropriate corrections. This
is essential as follow-up actions can be taken by having reflections after each
lessons are carried out. Teacher should be asking himself Did the learners meet the
objectives? and Could all learners use the materials properly?. These are the
examples of types of evaluation teacher should have done after every lesson. For my
lesson, after I have carried out my lesson, I will reflect the teaching and learning
session that I had with my students and revise whether did the materials I use are
suitable for all the students? If not, what should I use to replace the materials as an

alternative?. Then, for the next lesson, I will make better materials usage so that
everyone in my classroom can enjoy my teaching and feel participated.

Based on all those 6 aspects in the ASSURE model,it is most certainly that wellplanned lesson can be created. However, it is almost impossible to conduct a lesson that
meets all the requirements of students. That is why teachers need to have evaluation at the
end of each teaching session. Thus we can conclude teaching-learning are two inseparable
components wherein teaching refers to the instructional situation and learning refers to the
receiving/responding situation. Both of these are equally important. The ASSURE model is
just one strategy to effectively integrate technology into curriculum. The more experience
gained throughout teaching, teachers will probably find that the steps in the ASSURE model
are second nature and that will lead to better teaching.
