The Adbri Masonry paving range encompasses pavers beginning at brick size and moving all the way through to large
format pavers. Many of these pavers are sized in modules of 100mm meaning that pavers will run in sequence of 100,
200, 300 and 400mm measurements. Modular sizing facilitates the practical combination of different sized pavers into
the one pavement, giving greater flexibility to design, that incorporates contrasting styles or colours as inlays, borders
or highlights.

Most Adbri Masonry pavers come with choice of thickness to differentiate between pedestrian and domestic driveway
applications. Many paving projects incorporate a combination of driveway and pedestrian areas and the paving range
allows the astute buyer to purchase the right paver for the right job.
Using thinner pavers for pedestrian areas saves on excavation, and the cost of pavers, thinner pavers are also lighter
and easier to handle, making them practical for the DIY Handyman.

Residential Paving Installation

Adbri Masonry Pavers can be laid by two methods; Rigid Installation (with a concrete basecourse) or Flexible
Installation (a granular basecourse). Properly constructed rigid pavements can be more stable where soil
conditions are poor, (e.g. reactive or poorly drained clay).
Drainage is most important for a successful paving project. Care must be taken to grade the basecourse
and the finished pavement level at a minimum gradient of 2% (or 100mm per 5.0 lineal metres).
Refer to the CMAA's MA44 document for further drainage details.
The laying of pavers on a sand bed on a concrete slab is not addressed in this brochure. It can be done, but
efflorescence staining can occur on pavers laid in this manner if there is inadequate drainage of the concrete slab.
For further information please refer to: Adbri Masonry Paving Installation Guide at www.adbrimasonry.com.au and Concrete
Masonry Association of Australia (CMAA) Guidelines at www.cmaa.com.au:- T45 Concrete Segmental Pavements Design Guide for Residential Accessways and Roads, MA44 Concrete Flag Pavements - Design and Construction Guide.
Note: The following is a guide only and in no way replaces the services of a professional design consultant.

Flexible Installation

Rigid Installation (recommended for all Atenstone installations)

Step 1. Excavation: Excavate your area to allow for a granular*

basecourse, (75mm for pedestrian traffic and 100mm for driveways
after compaction), plus 20-25mm of washed coarse bedding sand
plus the thickness of the paver. Note: Pavers for driveways should
be at least 50mm thick.

Step 1. Excavation: Excavate your area to allow for a 75mm

thick, (or 100mm for a driveway) concrete slab, (rough screeded
20MPa grade with SL62 reinforcement at mid-depth and contraction
joints at 3 metre centres), plus 15-25mm of mortar plus the
thickness of the paver.

*Class A road-base or 20mm graded crushed rock are suitable materials.

Note: Pavers for driveways should be at least 50mm thick. The

concrete should be wet cured for at least 7 days before laying.

Step 2. Compact the Basecourse: Place the granular

basecourse to the desired depth and compact using a vibrating
plate machine. Ensure your basecourse is firm and of uniform
thickness. If the area needs to be built up then do so in compacted
75mm layers. Up to 5% of cement can be blended in to the granular
basecourse for more stability if required.
Step 3. Bedding Course: Spread clean coarse bedding sand
over the compacted basecourse to a depth of 25 - 35mm and
screed to a flat even surface.
Step 4. Lay the Pavers: Begin laying pavers from one corner,
utilising a string line to keep the lines straight. Don't walk on the
sand, walk on the pavers already laid.

Step 2. Apply the Bond Coat: Prepare a cement slurry by

mixing 6 parts fine washed sand to 1 part cement. Apply a thin
coat (about 1mm) to the working area of the slab with a broom and
to the underside of each Adbri Masonry paver just prior to laying.
Step 3. Lay the Pavers: Using a string line to keep the lines
straight, lay the pavers on a wet mortar bed of 15-25mm thickness.
Mortar should be mixed at a ratio of 3 parts washed concrete
sand to 1 part cement. Do not make the mortar too wet. The mortar
should be stiff enough to make a fist sized ball which holds its
shape. Pavers should be laid to form a smooth finished surface
by using a level and lightly tapping with a rubber mallet.

Step 5. Edging: Edge restraints are essential to prevent lateral

movement of the paved area and must be installed prior to the
application of the jointing sand. Refer to the Edging section for details.

Note: Do not add extra water to retemper any stiffening mortar.

Make a fresh batch instead; enough to last 30 - 45 minutes laying.

Step 6. Joints: Adbri Masonry pavers in this application should

be laid with a 3 - 4mm gap. Fill this joint with a fine washed sand
or specialised jointing sand as the paving proceeds. This will
minimise movement in the pavers when compacting.

Step 4. Joints: Adbri Masonry pavers can be laid butt-jointed, however

a fine washed sand or specialised pavement sand is recommended
to fill any small gaps. For wider joints, (e.g. >4mm) a non-shrink
grout may be used, but be careful not to smear any on the pavers.
If any does get on wash off quickly with water and a clean sponge.

Step 7. Final Compaction: To compact the pavers place a flat

heavy board across the pavers and hit with a rubber mallet.
For pavers of 50mm depth or greater, a vibrating plate machine
should be used for the best results (more jointing sand should be
added as pavers are compacted). It is recommended a piece of
carpet be placed under the plate to protect the pavers from chipping.

Notes: Do not bridge pavers over the contraction joints in the

concrete. Pavers must be cut and the joints filled with a flexible
compound as per Engineers specifications. If any mortar is spilled
on the pavers during installation remove immediately using a clean
sponge and water. Do not traffic finished pavement for 72 hours.

Calculate Pavers Needed

Paver Cutting

The quantity of pavers needed will

depend on the area to be paved,
and the paver chosen.

You will generally find that some cutting of pavers will be required to fit into specific
areas. An angle grinder with a masonry blade is suitable for good results. On jobs where
a high number of cuts are required or the paving units are large, it is easier to hire a brick
saw with a diamond blade - remember ear muffs, eye protection and a mask.

Work out the area to be paved in square

metres. Length(m) x width(m) = area(m2)

Edging

For rectangular areas:

It is important to have a good edge restraint to stop the pavers from spreading and to
ensure that the bedding sand is not washed away. Here are two general techniques.

By embedding the outside paver

For triangular areas:

1/2 x base(m) x height(m) = area(m2)

4m

eg. 1/2 x 3m x 4m = 6m2

Swimming Pools
Adbri Masonry pavers meet Australian slip resistant standards, making them ideal
for swimming pool surrounds.
Adbri Masonry pavers while being strong and durable have a soft feel, making them
comfortable under bare feet or for sitting along pool edges.
Adbri Masonry manufacture some pavers specifically for salt resistant applications,
necessary for around salt chlorinated swimming pools. This range varies between
States so please consult your local Adbri Masonry distributor or Adbri Masonry
product guide for specific localised advice.
For added protection Adbri Masonry recommend sealing pavers likely to be subjected
to salt attack.

Maintenance

2m

For odd shaped areas: break into sections.

Area 1: 4m x 3m = 12m2
Area 2: 6m x 3m = 18m2
Area 3: 1/2m x 6m x 2m = 6m2
Total area to be paved = 36m2

Pavers will require some ongoing maintenance to keep looking in a pristine condition.
Dirt and dust should regularly be removed whilst any weed growth should be sprayed
and controlled. Ants should not be allowed to nest in base materials.

Cleaning
All pavers will require cleaning from time to time. Oil, rust, efflorescence and other
stains can detract from the appearance of the paver. Proprietary cleaning products for
concrete pavers (and retaining walls) are readily available. Please contact your local
distributor or Adbri Masonry for further information. Do not use Hydrochloric Acid.

Notes:
For those who calculate using feet
and inches calculate the total area into
square feet by using the same method
as above and then multiply by .0929
to convert to square metres
When calculating pavers needed add
an additional 3-5%. Allowing for
complexity of the design, cuts and
breaks.

If a more protective surface is required then Adbri Masonry suggest you seal your paving.
There are a number of sealers specifically for concrete paving so please contact your
local distributor or Adbri Masonry for further information.
Note: All coloured product should be ordered at the one time to reduce the risk of batch
variation. No claims will be accepted once product has been installed.

Simply the easiest way to create a small wall or garden edge the Miniwall and Minicap systems combine to give
the professional and do-it-yourself landscaper a natural stone finish wall with the simplest of installations.
Able to create concave and convex curves, the Miniwall system requires minimal foundation preparation. Being one
of the lightest walling blocks available and coming pre-split and ready to use, the Miniwall and Minicap systems
are completely user friendly.
Available in a range of colours, the Miniwall system can form the basis of any garden construction, whether that
be a whole garden development or a small planter box.

Curved Radius
Minimum radius for inside curve is 435mm and 615mm for outside curves. As Miniwall
units can produce a tight radius, cumbersome corner units are not required - simply
round the corner off. Half units, if required, can be split or cut from full units using
a masonry cutter.
Hint: 21 units form a circle.

Maximum Heights
The Miniwall system is suitable for walls up to 500mm high (4 courses) where there is
no surcharge loading. A surcharge loading applies when:
A wall is supporting a driveway or other load
There is greater than 3:1 slope above the wall
Another retaining wall above the wall which is less in distance behind the wall than
double the height of the lower wall.

Solid Wall
Larger faces on alternative sides

Semi Solid Wall

Larger faces on visible side

Laying Instructions
Step 1
Dig a shallow trench, level and place 100mm of crushed rock in the bottom and compact.
Step 2
Spread and level 25mm of coarse sand as a bedding layer. Place the first layer of Miniwall
units onto the sand and tap into place with a mallet. A stringline is essential for building
straight walls. Ensure that each unit is level from front to back and side to side.
Step 3
Stack Miniwall units along the length of the wall to a maximum of 3 rows, ensuring that
each row is offset to the one below. If the wall is acting as a small retainer, install 90mm
agricultural pipe at the rear of the wall for drainage and fill 200mm behind the wall with
drainage material.
Step 4
Before applying Minicap units, place some construction adhesive either side of the interlocking
modules on the Miniwallunits. Position the Minicap units and press firmly into position.
Freestanding Walls
As Miniwall units are stacked vertically and both the front and back of each unit is finished
with an attractive split stone texture, both sides of the wall may be left exposed.
In this situation it is recommended that construction adhesive be used between the upper
courses of the wall.

Outside Curve

S-Curves
To build a solid wall which changes from an inside curve to an outside curve, a half unit
will be required every second course. Use a Minicap unit and perform the cut with
either a masonry saw or splitter.

The Wallstone system has many of the features of other systems but with the added advantage of choice between
a vertical wall or a setback wall. The Wallstone system gives a contemporary feel to an extremely flexible system,
encompassing straight walls, convex or concave curves, right angle corners and formal stairs in 150mm step heights.
The radius of convex walls can be as little as 2400mm and concave walls 2100mm, while the standard and tapered
units can be mixed to achieve appealing designs. Pins, clips or mortar are not required. A compacted gravel-leveling
pad is sufficient in all Wallstone applications.

Laying Instructions
Step 1
Dig a shallow trench, level and place 100mm of crushed rock in the bottom. Level and compact. Allow for 75mm embedment of the
bottom course and 300mm behind the wall for drainage.
Step 2
Spread and level approximately 25mm of coarse sand as a bedding layer then place the first course of Wallstone units. Use a stringline
for creating a straight line, and level from side to side and front to back. Install a 90mm Agricultural Pipe (on grade) at the rear of the
wall for drainage.
Step 3
Fill behind each course with granular rock for drainage and carefully compact. Check each course is level before proceeding and stack
each additional row offsetting from the block below.
Step 4
On the last course of stacking units, place a line of adhesive front and back and place the capping unit. Apply pressure to secure and
use a stringline and level for the best result.
Notes:
Slope the soil above and below the wall to ensure that water will flow away from and not accumulate near the wall
It is advisable to place a dob of adhesive between corner units
If a vertical wall is required then follow the same instructions but remove the narrow section at the top of each unit using a bolster chisel.

Building Steps with Wallstone

The versatility of building steps is only limited
by your imagination. Steps can be designed
with flowing curves or with right angles.
The simplest step design combines

Installation Guide - Allan Block

AB Installation Summary
Step 1
Excavate base trench at wall location and install Base Material (a well graded compactable aggregate 5mm to 20mm diameter).
Base Trench is typically 600mm wide by 100mm deep plus 25mm in depth for every 300mm of wall height. Begin excavation at the
lowest point and dig a level trench into the slope until it is deep enough to accommodate 100mm Base Material and the recommended
depth of embedment.
Step 2
Install base material and rake smooth and compact, check the entire length for level and adjust as needed.
Step 3
Install basecourse starting at the lowest point. Place the first row of Allan Block unit on the base material with the raised front lip facing
up and forward to the front of the wall. Check and adjust the level and alignment of all blocks with a stringline across the back of the
blocks or the back of the lips. Make minor adjustments by tapping the block with a rubber mallet. Irregularities in the base course
become larger as the wall stacks up!
Step 4
Install an Agricultural Pipe at the bottom rear of the drainage field with appropriate fall to designated drainage point. Fill Allan Block
hollow cores and the minimum 300mm behind the wall with drainage material (not crushed rock or material containing fines).
Using onsite soils, backfill behind drainage zone and in front of the base course.
Step 5
Brush off excess drainage material from top of blocks. Stack the next row of blocks with the vertical joints offset from the joints below.
Blocks may be adjusted to form straight lines and smooth curves. Check it is level and adjust as needed before installing drainage and
backfill materials as in Step 4.
Step 6
Using a vibrating plate compactor, compact over the top of the blocks running parallel to the wall. This will lock the blocks into
position. Avoid hitting the front lip, as this will knock the blocks out of alignment. Next, compact the drainage and then the backfill
area, always running parallel to the wall.
Step 7
Install additional courses by repeating steps 5 and 6. Each lift of drainage and backfill materials should be installed in the same manner,
compact in lifts of 200mm (every course).
This summary is intended as a general guide only. For more detailed information including creating curves, corners, steps,
terraced walls or water management, please refer to the seperate Allan Block Installation Guide (available from Adbri Masonry
or your local distributor) before constructing your wall.
For walls that exceed the maximum heights in the table opposite please consult an engineer and check with your local
Council for requirements.
