2. Ultimate Frisbee: VMIs Wellness Team invites employees of VMI and the alumni agencies,
including volunteer staff, to play Ultimate Frisbee twice a week after work. No prior experience is

3. Guest Speaker: Dr. Aldona Bialowas Pobutsky, associate professor of Spanish at the Department
of Modern Languages and Literatures at Oakland University, will give a lecture Thursday, March 31,
at 7:45 p.m. in the Turman Room, Preston Library. The title of her talk is "Branding Evil: Pablo
Escobar in Popular Culture?"

4. DMV2Go: Cant get to DMV? DMV is coming to you! With the latest technology, this wireless office
on wheels offers all DMV services, including applying for or renewing drivers licenses, IDs, hunting
licenses, vehicle titles, license plates, and decals. The DMV2Go will be at VMI Thursday, March 31,
from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

6. Upcoming Retirements:
Ms. Donna Fix of the Comptrollers Office will retire April 1, after 38 years of full-time and parttime service to the Institute.
Ms. Sandra Canellas of the laundry department will retire April 1, after 16 years of full-time
employment at VMI.
Ms. Kathy Clevenger will retire April 1 after spending a great career in the Tailor Shop.
We thank these employees for their dedicated service and wish them the very best in their
retirement!
7. Basic Pistol Course: The National Rifle Association has changed the procedure for its
courses. The Basic Pistol Course is now in two phases. Phase I is an online course that must be
completed in advance. Phase II is the VMI range/classroom part. Those planning to participate in
Phase II must bring the Phase I completion certificate to qualify.
Phase I costs $60, collected upon sign up at https://onlinetraining.nra.org/online-courses/.
Phase II is $40 cash and is due at sign up with Holly Leech, 131 Jackson Arch, Barracks. Phase II
training at 9 a.m. April 2 at Nichols Engineering Building. This is a six-hour course. Deadline for sign
up is March 25. Certificate holders qualify to apply for VA CCW (concealed carry weapons) permit.
Uniform - ACU or civilian - long sleeve shirt and pants/jeans. Hearing and eye protection will be
provided at the range. Pistols: Smith and Wesson M&P .22 LR, 22/45 Ruger and M-9 Berretta
pistols are provided at the range. Personally owned weapons (POW) are authorized in accordance
with VMI G.O. 25. POWs are authorized for use at the North Post range only and must be removed
from VMI after training. Anyone using a POW must provide ammunition if other than 9mm or .22 LR,
50 rounds per student; no reload or steel casing ammo is authorized.
8. Advanced Pistol Course: The class will be offered on Sunday, April 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30
p.m., beginning in Nichols Auditorium Room 514 and moving to the range in the afternoon. This
course is open to all VMI cadets, faculty, and staff. The Basic Pistol Course is a prerequisite for this
class. The $75 (cash only) fee is due at sign up with Holly Leech at 131 Jackson Arch, Barracks.
(Limited to 16 students; MIN of 8 students.)

Uniform - ACU or civilian - long sleeve shirt and pants/jeans. Hearing and eye protection will be
provided at the range. This course requires own weapon and holster. 9 mm, .38, .40 and .45
ammunition included in the fee; anyone using a weapon other than those must provide
ammunition; no reload or steel casing ammo authorized.
9. 27th Annual Environment Virginia Symposium, April 5-7: Gov. Terry McAuliffe will give the
keynote address at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 6, in Gillis Theater to the conference theme,
Virginias Environment: Change, Challenge and Opportunity. Plenary speaker is Dr. Marc
Edwards, Charles P. Lunsford Professor in the Virginia Tech Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil
and Environmental Engineering. His research focuses on premise plumbing, which affects the
safety of potable water. He will speak at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, April 7, in Gillis Theater, regarding his
experiences leading a research team reporting on the water crisis in the city of Flint, Mich.
Maj. Dorothy Hayden, assistant director for career services, will be moderator for a special session,
Environmental Career Opportunities, Wednesday, April 6, during Deans Hour, 11 a.m. to 12:15
p.m., in Nichols Engineering Building. Forty-three breakout sessions are scheduled all across post

10. 2016 Leader in Residence: Retired U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Frank Libutti will visit VMI as
leader in residence April 11-16. Since retiring, he has served with the New York Police Department
and the then newly created U.S. Department of Homeland Security in counter-terrorism information
analysis and protection. To arrange a departmental visit, contact Mrs. Ronda Dove at the VMI
Center for Leadership and Ethics at ext. 7361.
11. Blood Drive: Virginia Blood Services will conduct a bloodmobile April 13 and 14 in Cameron Hall.
Times are as follows:
Wednesday, April 13 2 to 8 p.m.
Thursday, April 14 noon to 8 p.m.
To make an appointment, sign up at http://www9.vmi.edu/rcbd. Sign in with your VMI username and
password, with VMI\ before the username. Donors are eligible to donate blood every 56 days. A
positive ID is required. Previous donors should bring their donor cards. There are six double
collections on the hour every hour from noon to 7 p.m. both days. Rats are not permitted to donate
double red.
Cadets may not miss any academic or military duty (including Rat Challenge) to donate blood.
Anyone missing SRC should sign out Bloodmobile.
12. Anatomy of a War Experience: Vietnam, 1967-1968 Tet and the Turning Point. The Norman
Lane Jr. Memorial Project will host a public conference April 16 in Marshall Hall. There is no fee to
attend,
but
those
planning
to
attend
are
asked
to
register
at
https://sites.google.com/site/2016ConferenceatVMI/registration. A complimentary lunch will be
provided.
Speakers will include George Herring, Alumni Professor of History Emeritus at the University of
Kentucky, a noted specialist in the history of U.S. foreign relations and author of America's Longest
War: The United States and Vietnam, 1950-1975; John Laurence, CBS News correspondent who
covered the war from Vietnam during three tours 1965-1970 and author of The Cat from Hue; and

Col. Robert H. Thompson, who commanded 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, in Hue during the Tet
Offensive.

13. 152 Anniversary Battle of New Market Re-enactment: The oldest Civil War re-enactment in the
nation still held on the original ground will be held at the Virginia Museum of the Civil War in New
Market on May 14-15. The event will feature battle re-enactments each day, demonstrations, food
vendors, period merchants and more. It is free to VMI employees and their families. Show your ID
badge at the front gate.

14. The 16 Biennial Stonewall Jackson Symposium: Sponsored by the Stonewall Jackson House,
the symposium will be held Friday evening, May 27, and Saturday, May 28. The program will
include an opening address by Frank A. OReilly and a full day of lectures on Saturday by Jackson
historians and biographers, including Keith S. Bohannon, Robert E. L. Krick, Robert K. Krick, John
W. Mountcastle, Elizabeth Parnicza, and bestselling author Jeff Shaara. VMI faculty and staff may
call 7704 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday to register at a discounted rate.
15. 2015 Tax Publications: Preston Library now has copies of the 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ forms
and instructions for the tax year 2015 on display in the circulation lobby. If you have questions, Ask
a Librarian, or call 540-464-7571 to talk to a Reference Librarian.
