UPDATES AND ACTIVITIES OF THE GFATM RCC II PPTCT PROGRAM

JULY- NOVEMBER 2015

Let us celebrate Life

T H I S

I S S U E

Life, as many say, is a precious gift

gift; a gift which cannot be replaced or
exchanged with something better. The beauty of this gift unfolds with time.
For some, things unfold quite unpleasantly for no reason of their own. But if it
can be brought once again to its true dignity and beauty, there is reason to
celebrate.

Let us Celebrate Life

States Snapshots

We, at PPTCT, are at that stage of celebration, where we can feel the joy as we
look at the lives that we have restored with its fullness. In a society where
carrier of the HIV virus carries a more deadly stigma, and consequent social
exclusion, saving the lives of positive pregnant women from this tragedy has

been a great achievement.

World AIDS Day Celebration

We have come one step closer to the goal of a healthier generation and

ensured a more secure future for the children of positive pregnant women,
where they are free
ee from fears and live their lives like any other child, sharing
the same privileges. We could put back their laughter and guarantee a
childhood

of

joy

and

growing

with

dignity.

G U J A R A T
I have a patient named Snehal (Name changed) and I would like to tell you something about her. She was
born in Mumbai. She has a younger brother and a younger sister. Her mother is well educated and her
father is a Principal in a Government School. She completed her Bachelor in Commerce. When she was in
the last year of her B.Com, she met Nayan a resident of a small village in Nepal. He was in Mumbai for a
job. One day Nayan proposed Snehal to marry him. She knew that her parents would not agree for the
marriage. So they got married in a Hindu temple without her parents knowledge.
After marriage, Nayan took her to his village in Nepal. There she came to know that Nayan is already
married since 2 years and also had a daughter. In his community they are allowed to have 2 wives, but
Nayans parents and his first wife opposed and strictly denied to accept this marriage. She was devastated
after knowing and facing all these. They came back from Nepal and started living in a rented room in Surat,
Gujarat. After few months Snehal became pregnant. She came to SMIMER hospital when she was 4 months
pregnant. She was tested positive for HIV. She was broken when she was informed about her status. We
counselled her thoroughly and asked her to remain in constant contact and not to miss any follow up visit.
Her husband
and was also tested for HIV but result came negative. After the negative report, his behavior
changed. He left Snehal and started living with his 1st wife. The counselor and I supported Snehal very much
during her entire pregnancy.
In the 9th month of pregnancy she had labor pains at 5 am in the morning. She called me and the counselor.
She delivered a healthy baby boy and the child was given NVP syrup.I regularly visited her in the hospital
continued to follow her up for CPT and DBS testing of her child. The child was tested DBS and Rapid Test. All
the reports were negative.
At present she is doing job for her and her childs survival. Her husband visits them frequently but she is still
not called by her parents. She is very much thankful to our PPTCT project and still attends Support Group
Meetings to make other ANCs aware about the necessity of the HIV testing/ART, institutional delivery and
child testing.
