Duplex built by Lansing contractor

Kenny Becker completes full circle for area native sisters
by Susan Cantine-Maxson
The movie Field of Dreams
created the phrase If you build
it, they will come. Local contractor Kenny Becker hoped
that was the scenario for a new
duplex he wanted to build in
Lansing last year.
Becker, a long-time contractor from Lansing, has completed numerous types of building projects but usually those
projects were proposed by the
owners. This time, he decided
to speculate by buying a lot in
Lansing and building his own
project, in the hopes that he
would be able to sell it before.
As the project was taking
shape, Becker was at a social
event and began discussing
the duplex with Ann Delaney
of rural Lansing, who said she
would want the duplex unit located on the corner of Beckers lot. Anns husband, Frank,
had died and she was ready to
move into town from their beef
farm in the country. Becker had
built Ann and Franks house on
the farm 20 years ago. They
had been very satisfied with the
job he and his crew had done,
so she felt confident that she
would be happy with another
home built by Becker.
Alice Clemments, Anns sister who lived with her husband,
Jerry, in Utah, thought the idea
of moving back to Lansing
sounded appealing. She speculated that they should buy the
other half of the duplex. Even
though Alice and Jerry had
lived in Utah for 44 years, they
were ready for a change. Being
a military family for many years,
they had finally settled in Utah,

This new duplex built in Lansing by contractor Kenny Becker and now shared by sisters Ann Delaney and Alice and her husband
Jerry Clemments was constructed on the same lot where the sisters parents, Joe and Alberta Troendle, once lived.
where Jerry worked as security police on the base, but he
was ready to retire. Family was
close by in the Midwest and
her mother lives in Thornton
Heights in Lansing.
By December of 2014, Becker had firm commitments from
both sisters that they wanted
the duplex. They liked the concept, plus the specific lot where
the duplex was to be built had
strong ties for them since it
was where their parents had
lived for so many years. Alices
mother told her that she was
born in the house next door. It
seemed like completing the full
circle to come back to that location.
When Becker started the
project, the 120-foot x 60-foot
lot had an old garage on it. He
explained, I knew there was
also an old foundation for the
house buried on the lot as well.
This was the first time I chose
to do the entire project from
beginning to end all by myself.
I felt I had enough experience
to draw the plans and have an

engineer look at the truss work.

I drew up the plans for the duplex with each side having
1,380 square feet, 440 square
feet for each garage, plus the
basement if they wanted one.
The overall length of the building was 100 feet. I designed it
with the garage separating the
two units since people dont
want the sounds of the oth-

shared space. Each unit has

its own sewer and water lines.
The bedrooms are 13 x 15 and
13 x 12 on the main floor. The
entire design was made so that
people could live there as long
as they wanted without having
to do stairs.

Complete home remodel for Jason and Brooke Troendle combines

do-it-yourself projects with
expertise of local contractors
by Kelli Boylen
With YouTube and a handy
husband, it is amazing what
you can do, says Brooke
Troendle of Waukon.
Her handy husband is Jason
Troendle, and their family
moved into its completely
renovated new home at 312
East Main Street in Waukon
The Troendles didnt just
remodel certain parts of the
house; every room in the
house was taken down to the
2x4s and built back out. They
hired Danny Meyer as their
general contractor, but they
also did a large amount of the
necessary tasks themselves,
even building a stone fireplace,
while both working full time and
caring for their three young

daughters. Brooke says that at

first, yes, her husband thought
she was crazy for undertaking
this project.
The Troendles originally
lived in rural Harpers Ferry, but
as their daughters got more
involved in school they knew
they wanted to live in Waukon.
They considered building, but
then started looking at existing
homes. A real estate agent told
them to make a list of all the
homes they would consider,
even if they were not for sale.
The property on East Main
appealed to them because of
the large lot, and Brooke loved
the fact that since it hadnt had
much updating since it was
built in 1904 they could do the
updates they wanted to their
own liking.
The original 1904 foundation,

basement, the 2x4s and other

support beams are all that
currently remain of the original
house.
The house now sports a new
roof, windows, siding, electrical
work, heating vents, drywall,
cabinetry about everything
that could be redone, was.
They were able to refinish some
of the original wood floors and
woodwork: other areas of the
home have new flooring and
trim installed.
Although they did not change
the overall layout of the house
by much, the Troendles made
their home more open by
removing 13 interior doors that
they did not replace. They also
added a five-foot extension of

Todd and Lauri Kaeser of rural Monona remodel

original family farm home to meet their current needs and lifestyle
by Brianne Eilers
A home remodel project can
be quite a daunting task at
times, but for Todd and Lauri
Kaeser of rural Monona the
process went pretty quickly and
the end result was exactly what
they had hoped for.
Todd noted that their farm
was originally a wedding gift
to his grandparents, and the
house he and Lauri remodeled
was built in 1929. The home
was a Sears & Roebuck kit
house, and it came in on the
railway through Waterville. It
had sheet rock, running water
and electricity, and Todd said
it was the Cadillac of houses
at that time. While gutting the
house, they found a board
above a door in the old kitchen
that said the home was built
in December of 1929 by Joel
Kaesers

The rural Monona home of Todd and Lauri Kaeser was originally the farm
home of Todds family. It was a Sears & Roebuck kit home that came to the
area via railway through Waterville. The couple conducted an extensive
remodel of the home last year, making major changes to both its exterior and
interior, as evident in these surrounding photos.

Local contractors incorporate fixtures from Chicago into plans from

St. Louis to build rural Lansing home for Craig White and Gary Kerndt
by Brianne Eilers
Rural Lansing residents
Craig White and Gary Kerndt
began the process of designing
their new home a few years
ago, before they had even
moved back to Iowa. They
decided to use an architect out
of St. Louis, MO to draw up the
blue prints of the home.
White noted that prior to
moving back to Iowa, as
both he and Kerndt are Iowa
natives, they had lived in
several larger cities across the
United States. While living in
Chicago, they purchased most
of the hardware, plumbing

and other fixtures that have

been installed in their home
between Waukon and Lansing.
He explained that they knew
what kind of look and style they
wanted for their hardware and
fixtures. Being in a larger city
allowed for them to be able to
find those items, and storage
of them was fairly inexpensive.
The pair purchased property
that was a part of the family
farm that Kerndt grew up on,
and the building site offers
some amazing views of the
Allamakee County countryside.

Duplex

Becker had designed the duplex, but since the sisters purchased the duplex units before
the building actually got started, they made some personal
alterations. First, both decided
to have full basements with infloor heating rather than using
a slab foundation. They added
egress windows in the basement since the bedrooms would
be used regularly. One liked a
coat closet in the front room;
the other didnt want one there.
One wanted a laundry room
in the bathroom; one wanted
it in a closet area. Becker had
planned on tile and carpeting
but one wanted hickory wood
floors. Beckers crew did the
wood floors and tile.
For the most part, the floor
plans stayed the same, mirroring each others living space.
They had picked their own
wood finishes, blinds and colors for the walls and window
treatments. Since Alice and
Jerry were still in Utah for much

of each unit. Duane Barth installed the carpets, and most
of the kitchen cupboards and
countertops were purchased at
Menards.
Outside, Kelly Concrete from
Waukon, owned by the sisters
nephew, did the cement work.
Kruger Landscaping did some
of the raised flower beds. Initially, the sisters wanted a white
house with brown trim, but following Beckers advice, opted
for a light brown with white trim.
Becker had also planned on a
putting a strip of lawn between
the two driveways but the sisters opted for a continuous
driveway so there would be less
to mow and more driveway to
park on. They joked, We each
have a good neighbor who will
sweep snow and remove snow
from both sides.
Construction began in October and November of 2014,
with the pouring of the basement. The owners moved in
May/June of 2015. Each unit

and a full basement under each

bedroom and bathroom plus
a family room, utility space
and storage. The footprint of
the building goes to the limits
allowed by the planning and
zoning regulations of Lansing,
allowing six feet behind the unit
and nine feet on each side with
a 16-foot space in front. All the
doorways are wide enough for
handicap accessibility and the
entrances into the garages are
sloping instead of steps.
Alice and Jerry, along with
Ann, commented, The whole
process was really painless for
us, except for the pocketbook,
plus we have great views for
the high school football games.

Its difficult to find the land to
build on. There are some very
nice areas to build, but if people dont want to sell the land
then the only option is to tear
a house down and build a new
one. There are additional costs
of proper disposal of all the
deconstruction with those projects.
Although Becker contacts
all the subcontractors, he likes
to give the owners options of
people to work with and then
he gets bids. This was the first
time hes been involved as the
general contractor from start to

lot of coordinating subcontractors, and a lot of planning and
organizing to keep the project
moving forward.

None of the Beckers children have gone into the construction trade. He stated, My
kids worked with me during

them that even if they didnt
want to be a contractor, the
skills they learned would be
helpful when they were out

things themselves.
He concluded with pride, Its
been a good profession. I always thought Id do this until I

and here I am, 35 years later,
still doing it because I love it.
We were able to live in a small

Kaesers
Continued from page 5

Ellefson.
The Kaesers began their
remodel project in February
of 2015, when they gutted the
main level themselves. We
had a photo book made to
document the project, Lauri
said. The book is a unique
memento of the remodeling
process through each stage.
She took pictures of the various
rooms from start to finish and
then put together their photo
book.
The majority of the remodel
project focused on the main
level and exterior of the home.
During the remodel process, the
Kaesers lived in their doublewide trailer on the property, so
they could communicate with
the contractors every day and
also work on clean-up inside
each night after the contractors
had finished up. Both Todd and
Lauri agreed that by cleaning
up the work areas, it helped
the contractors out and kept
the work flowing smoothly. With
Todd being around every day
with his farming activities, he
could also lend a hand if any of
the contractors needed some
assistance.
It just went very well, he
said of the whole process. They
also tried to do as much work
as they could by themselves, to
help keep costs down.
The Kaesers wanted to open
up the downstairs area, which
they were able to accomplish by
removing some walls. A 16x25
addition was also built on, and
they added a bathroom as well.
The addition has become the
master bedroom and master
bathroom, and there is also
room in the bathroom for the
washer and dryer.
The wood floors on the
main level are original, and
had previously been covered
with carpet and tile. They
decided to move the kitchen,
to give them a bigger kitchen
area. The kitchen features
all new cabinetry, including
an appliance cupboard. The
appliance cupboard has a shelf
that slides out from the cabinet
and can be raised up or down,
so the appliance occupying that
shelf never has to be moved.
They also have an arched
window above the sink, which
gives the space a unique
character. The Kaesers also
decided to leave the original
Kaesers

chimney
exposed,
adding
some interest both in color and
texture, and they feel it really
works with the rest of the home.
An office now occupies
the old kitchen area, and the
garage area is now enclosed
and connected to the home.
One special feature of their
downstairs area is the use of
pocket doors, to help save
space in some of the tighter
areas. For those not familiar
with pocket doors, they actually
slide into the wall, as opposed
to swinging out one way or the
other. The Kaesers had three
pocket doors installed.
Throughout the entire house,
the color scheme is very
cheerful and vibrant, and they
used 14 different colors. Todd
calls it the rainbow house,
Lauri joked. She said picking
out colors was a process, and
she was working at choosing
colors right up until the time
came to paint.

One of the original features of the now remodeled home of Todd and Lauri
Kaeser is the chimney that spans both levels of the home, as evident in
the surrounding photos. The Kaesers wanted to retain the original brick
look and feel of the chimney because they felt it enhanced the overall
remodel of the home while maintaining an original feature of the home
originally constructed in 1929.

In addition to adding some
square footage inside, the
Kaesers also decided to add
a deck and a porch area onto
their home. The front deck
features Trex decking. On the
north side of their home, they
added a porch with a great view
of the farm. They let the ground
settle over the fall and winter,
so now theyll be ready to do
some landscaping.
Overall, the remodeling
process took about three
months from the time the
concrete footings were poured
to the time the Kaesers could
move in. They moved into the
finished home the first part of
October last year.
For those considering a
remodeling
project,
Todd
and Lauri would suggest
communicating and working
closely with your contractors
and, if possible, helping by
keeping the work spaces clear.
They also said that planning
is a very important part and
it helps to know exactly what
you want when you begin the
process.

The once family farm home of the Kaeser family in rural Monona looks decidedly different today than when it first arrived as
a Sears & Roebuck kit home in Waterville via the railroad and was constructed in 1929. In addition to the remodeling of that
original dwelling, homeowners Todd and Lauri Kaeser also added on a 16x25 addition that now serves as the homes master
bedroom, as well as a covered front porch evident in the foreground of the above photo and a new deck that opens to a
welcoming view of the Kaeser family farm.

Living Landscapes bring surprising health benefits

As much of the country deals
with winter weather from snow
falls to grey skies, its natural
to long for spring when yards,
parks and other natural spaces
bloom. Living landscapes are
an important part of the outdoor
lifestyle that Americans enjoy,
but the benefits go beyond
the barbecue and backyard
baseball. Green spaces are
necessary for better health.
The advantages of grass
and landscaping surpass the
usual physical benefits that
result from outdoor activity,
said Kris Kiser, president
and CEO, Outdoor Power
Equipment Institute (OPEI).
Numerous studies have found
that people who spend more
time outside or are exposed to
living landscapes are happier,
healthier and smarter.
Researchers have studied
the impact of nature on human
well-being for years, but recent
studies have found a more direct
correlation between human
health, particularly related to
stress, and the importance of
peoples access to nature and
managed landscapes.
Getting dirty is actually good
for you. Soil is the new Prozac,
according to Dr. Christopher
Lowry, a neuroscientist at the
University of Bristol in England.
Mycobacterium vaccae in soil
mirrors the effect on neurons
that Prozac provides. The
bacterium stimulates serotonin
production, which explains
why people who spend time
gardening and have direct
contact with soil feel more
relaxed and happier.
Living near living landscapes
can improve your mental
health.
Researchers
in
England found that people
moving to greener areas
experienced an immediate
improvement in mental health
that was sustained for at least
three years after they moved.
The study also showed that
people relocating to a more
developed area suffered a drop
in mental health.
Green spaces can make
you healthier too. People who
live within a half mile of green
space (such as parks, public
gardens and green ways) were
found to have a lower incidence
of fifteen diseases by Dutch
researchers
including
depression, anxiety, heart
disease, diabetes, asthma and
migraines. A 2015 study found
that people living on streets
with more trees had a boost in
heart and metabolic health.
Living landscapes make you
smarter. Children gain attention
and working memory benefits
when they are exposed to
greenery, says a study led by

Payam Dadvand of the Centre

for Research in Environmental
Epidemiology in Barcelona,
In addition, exposure to
natural settings may be widely
effective in reducing attention
deficit/hyperactivity
disorder
symptoms in children.
This applies to adults as
well. Research has also shown
that being around plants helps
you concentrate better at home
and at work. Charlie Hall,
Ellison Chair in International
Floriculture at Texas A&M
University,
believes
that
spending time in gardens can
improve attention span and
memory performance by as
much as 20 percent.
A National Institute of
Health study found that adults
demonstrate
significant
cognitive gains after going
on a nature walk. In addition,
a
Stanford
University

study found that walking in

nature, rather than a concreteoriented, urban environment,
resulted in decreased anxiety,
rumination,
and
negative
affect, and produced cognitive
benefits, such as increased
working memory performance.
Living landscapes help you
heal faster. Multiple studies
have discovered that plants
in hospital recovery rooms or
views of aesthetically-pleasing
gardens help patients heal up
to one day faster than those
who are in more sterile or
austere environments.
All of these benefits reinforce
the importance of maintaining
our yards, parks and other
community green spaces.
Trees, shrubs, grass and
flowering plants are integral
to human health. Not only do
they provide a place for kids
and pets to play, they directly

doing so can cause significant

damage to the lawn. Lawns
that have been cut too low
are less capable of surviving
drought and are unlikely to
thrive. When grass is cut too
short, the stem tissue from
the grass is exposed, and that
exposure can lead to unsightly
grass that turns yellow or
brown. Grass that is cut too
short also may suffer from
weaker roots, which in turn

While it might be tempting

to lower mower blades when
summer temperatures reach
their hottest, it is possible to cut
grass too short. Homeowners
who want to cut back on the
time they spend mowing their
lawns under the hot summer
sun should avoid lowering
their mower blades too low, as

makes the grass weaker and

less likely to grow in strong. In
addition, weaker grass is more
susceptible to weed growth,
which can be both a nuisance
and an eyesore. When mowing,
homeowners should remove
no more than one-third of the
grass blade. Mowing at this
height will promote strong roots
and protect the grass when the
weather gets especially hot in
the summer.

the entryway to their home.
Some of the ideas in their
home came from the popular
website Pinterest, and they
watched YouTube videos to
learn skills they didnt already
have themselves, such as
masonry to create their
fireplace and porch columns.
Brooke says they are glad they
were able to do as much as
they could themselves.
Never underestimate what
you can do, Brooke says.
People assume they are not
handy, but if you take the time
you can figure out how to do
just about anything.
They advise to understand
your own limits, though; for
example, they didnt attempt
any electrical work themselves.
But, in other areas it can save
time and be very satisfying to
do things yourself. They noted
that using the advice of people
who know what they are doing
is very helpful, too.

husband, Jason, purchased just over a year
ago included a considerable amount of kitchen
cupboard space. Their oldest daughter, Berlin,
says the kitchen is her favorite part of the
home because she likes to bake.

The
family
lived
with
Brookes parents for 13 weeks
between selling their log home
and having the new house
move-in ready, and she says
her parents were a huge help in
watching the kids so they could
get things done. They moved in
in May 2015 when a majority of
the project was complete, but
they did not have the working
laundry room completed until
July. Brooke says that that time
reminded them how nice it was
to have their own place and
clean clothes.

The Troendles say there is

very little they would have done
differently if they were to do the
project over. Both agree they
are happy they did the project
at one time verses breaking it
up and doing portions of it over
time.
Jasons advice to others

The home has a Lutron
lighting system, and some of
the rooms are set to have the
lights automatically come on
when someone enters the
room. White described the
home as contemporary with
some traditional elements.
The
downstairs
space
utilizes an open concept,
designed with entertaining in
mind. It features a mud room
and powder room, a large area
for sitting and entertaining,
and a kitchen area, including
a catering kitchen. The open
layout and neutral color
scheme allowed for White and
Kerndt to be able to showcase
their collection of art, which
they have acquired throughout
their lives. There are large
windows in the downstairs area
to take in the natural beauty of
the location.
White explained that they
have an all IKEA kitchen,
which includes a catering
kitchen. The catering kitchen
is a separate area where prep

out of sight of guests, as well
as clean-up of any dishes. The
catering kitchen also boasts
plenty of storage.
The main kitchen area
features an island with sinks
with room for seating around it.
There is an induction cook-top,
as well as a pot-filler. The potfiller itself is a unique feature in
the kitchen, as the contractors
hadnt worked with many of
those before. It is essentially a
plumbing feature located next
to the cook-top that can make
filling a pasta pot or other large
pot with water a little easier
than trying to fill it in a sink and
carry it to the cook-top or stove.
The second level of the
home is more of a private,
homey space. There are three
bedrooms upstairs, as well as
two baths, a den and a laundry
room/kitchenette. One of the
bedrooms has the designation
of being the mother-in-law
apartment, should they ever

need to stay for an extended
period of time. White explained
that is also part of the reason for
the kitchenette in the laundry
room. In case they would have
someone who cant do stairs
easily, their guest could still be
able to reheat food or use the
microwave to do some cooking
upstairs. The bathrooms both
feature sinks made from repurposed pieces of furniture,
such as a gentlemans chest in
the master bathroom.
Moving outdoors, the home
boasts a large patio where
White and Kerndt can also
entertain. There is a large
fireplace that was constructed
by Jim Dixon of Dixon Concrete
and Masonry. Behind the
fireplace is a smaller patio
that can accommodate the
grill. Also outdoors is a kitchen
garden, as well as raised bed
gardens. Landscaping features
around the home were installed
by Byrnes Landscaping.
When asked if he had any

HOME & Garden

advice for someone who is
looking into building a new
home or is beginning the
process, White said that anyone
who is building a new home
should be prepared to make
changes from their original
plans. He gave the example
that their plans had initially
involved a flat roof for the home
to give it a more modern look,
but once construction began,
the contractor explained that
the flat roof would require extra
supports and there could be
concerns with snow piling up
and the added weight from that.
After learning about some of the
potential concerns associated
with having a flat roof in this
area, they decided to go with
a more traditional sloped roof.
Other than that, most of the
features in the blueprints were
able to be done.
The contractors all worked
very hard to accommodate
everything that we wanted to
do, White said.

Preparing your garden this spring

by David M. Johnson
As the snows recede and
the grass turns from the burnt
brown to a vibrant green,
everyones attention turns
to the siren call of spring as
winters grip weakens its hold
on nature. Spring signals its
return with the onslaught of
motorcycle traffic, parents
playing catch with their kids
in the backyard and that sure
sign of spring, the tilling of
the numerous gardens found
throughout the community.
But what is the protocol
or preparation process to
determine the most successful
garden
planting?
Anyone
who has been involved with
planting a garden always has
his or her idea what is best for
a good garden, but there does
exist an avenue that offers
the best approach to growing
a productive garden. Iowa
State Universitys Extension
service provides educational
advice and information that
will enhance a gardeners

knowledge and ability to have a

productive garden.
When preparing your garden
seed bed, as the winter snows
melt off and the spring rains
decrease, it is important to
avoid the wet soils so as not
to damage it and to also avoid
a hard soil condition resulting
from working it when it is too
wet. Each individual gardener
will have to make the decision
on when to start to till depending
on not only the moisture but the
type of soil, as different soil
types react differently when
worked while wet.
The garden soils are alive and
will not produce when overly
wet just as they will not produce
when they are extremely dry. A
good soil base contains the
healthy ration of 25% water to
25% air, so that pore spaces
between soil particles are not
compacted from moisture and
not limiting the soil to breathe,
plus having just the right
amount of moisture. Properly
prepared gardens will also
have a healthy contingent of

earthworms, natures little tillers

of the soil.
If you have a garden plot
that does not drain well, it is
recommended by the Extension
office to add organic matter, like
compost or peat. If you are not
sure if the soil is ready to work,
a rule of thumb is to clump up
the soil and if it dissolves or
crumbles after you release it, it
is about ready to work.
The soil type is not the only
determining factor on how early
you can work your plot. The
amount of sunlight exposure
is a key factor, plus whether or
not your garden is exposed to a
more open air environment. Is
it restricted to wind flow due to
buildings or trees limiting the air
movement? Wind can be an aid
to drying out the garden if there
is an excess of moisture.
It is suggested that your
garden plot is tested for the
many nutrients and other
elements that the soil and
your plants need to thrive and
produce. The Extension office
offers kits, and your local

nursery and or a garden vendor

also may offer the different
products to test the soil before
working and planting your
garden. There are 13 elements
that plants need, but nitrogen
(N), phosphorous (P) and
potassium (K) are three main
elements that make up the
fertilizer required by your plant
population.
Calcium, magnesium and
the micronutrients, like iron and
zinc, are important but the NPK
combination will determine

more than anything the health

and needs of your garden. Two
to three pounds of nitrogen per
1000 square feet per year is
recommended.
Testing the soil pH level
should also be considered
when preparing your garden
for planting. The pH level is the
acidity of the soil; a test number
of less than 7 is acidic and more
than 7 shows that the soil has

an alkaline content. Electronic
meters, indicator test strips,
and chemical colored dyes will
help to test for pH. Your testing
will be determined by how
much you want to spend, but if
you are experiencing a garden
that just is not giving out what
you are expecting, then testing
is recommended to give an
accurate evaluation of what
your garden needs.
If you are planting some corn
in part of your garden plot and,
say, tomatoes and peppers in
another section of your garden,
you may encounter difficulties
to match the soil to the needs
of each particular produce
you are planting. Sometimes,
adjusting pH to each individual
plant or section of garden may
cause more problems than just
eliminating deficiencies.
Besides fertilizer and solving
any pH deficiencies, applying
compost to your garden may
also provide benefits. When
your garden soil requires an

additional boost with organic

material to stimulate plant
growth and enhance water
retention, a recommended
one to three inches of compost
mixed into the soil will assist
with that boost. If straight
compost is not an option or not
desirable, applying a prepared
top soil, a blend that produces
a quality soil product, may
be most helpful. The topsoil
may be mixed in the existing
soil, and one to two inches is
recommended.
Guessing when that last
frost in April will occur helps in
organizing and planting your
seeds. Seed potatoes are
tricky; if you plant too early,
such as when some gardeners
observe the tradition to plant
their potatoes every Good
Friday, then you might lose
out as potatoes will rot in cold,
wet soil. Iowa State Extension
proposes hardy plants like pea
seedlings, radishes, onions
and lettuce that may be planted

earlier than tomatoes, melons

and peppers, which require a
warmer soil base. If you are
planting corn, observe your
local farmers, who have a
more vested interest in having
a good crop of corn and most
likely will not plant until the right
conditions offer the best time to
plant. To get a jump on garden
planting, some individuals will
start their plants indoors, but
unless you have considerable
space with large windows or a
greenhouse providing available
sunlight, it may be difficult to
achieve the desired results for
that head start.
After planting, weed and
pest control are important
to sustaining the health
and productivity of your
garden. The experts believe
there are no safe pesticides,
that even natural, homeremedy
and/or
organic
pesticides can be harmful. If
using chemicals, always read
and follow label directions and
be wary of internet remedies or
concoctions. It is recommended
that if you are using the internet
for information, use researchbased information that has
.edu at the end of the search
URL. There is also nonchemical pest control for the
garden offered by Iowa State
University Extension, as well
as other education/research
avenues on the internet.
Again,
if
you
are
experiencing difficulties or
have questions, the local
Extension office has available
information. Veteran gardeners
or Master Gardeners will also
be more than happy to share
their secrets on what may be
best for your garden plot. With
food becoming more and more
expensive within an already
tightening of family budgets,
plus concern increasing in how
purchased produce is handled including pesticides, conditions
in harvesting and preparation,
a family or individual garden
may be the answer to these
concerns.
Nothing is more healthy and
satisfying than growing your
own food. Getting to the end
product of those vegetables
and fruits may not be that
difficult if everyone is armed
with the correct information
to grow that garden. This
information is available and
after a few years when the
kinks are ironed out, you too
might be the person people will
look to for information on how
to grow their garden.
