& The 501st Legion
ressing up as your favorite superheroes

used to be something left to childhood
antics. However, with the rise of
Comic-Con, WonderCon, and even local
favorites like Sci-Fi Con in Tulare and FresCon
right here in Fresno, adults can unabashedly let
their inner kids run free. But for some, its more
than just getting an opportunity to sport a well
crafted costume of a much loved character, its
also about helping out and giving back.

The 501st Legion is an international
Star Wars costuming organization dedicated to
celebrating the Star Wars universe through the
creation, display, and wearing of quality character
costumes that represent the villainous characters
from the famous saga. Yes, you read that right,
an organization dedicated to dressing up as
villains while they do charitable things. Since
1997 the costuming organization has spread
the magic of Star Wars worldwide through its
authentic-looking costumes, and has become
a leading force in fan-based charity events.
The 501st, also known as Vaders Fist, is
truly dedicated to brightening the lives
of those less-fortunate with their
hardcore fandom as the Bad guys
doing good.

Believe it or not, the
charity work wasnt initially
part of the original plan.In
fact, there wasnt much
of a plan to begin
with. Founder Albin
Johnson was just
looking for a place
to host photos of his
efforts in replicating the
Stormtrooper uniforms
as costumes. In 1997
Johnson started a Geocities
website (like Wordpress.com before there was
Wordpress) called Detention Block 2551 as
a place to post his pictures featuring himself
and friend, Tom Crews, in their homemade
Stormtrooper. Before long, a fellow cosplayer
Arnie DeHerrera started Stormtrooperland
and began an email conversation with both
Johnson and Crews. Scott McArthur of Canada
got involved shortly after and developed the
organizations original logo, which quickly
evolved in to the final version you see today of
the red, black and white logo with the phrase
Vaders Fist to express the force with which the
501st is led.

Within weeks of launching both
Johnsons and Herreras websites, Johnson
was fielding email requests from people not
only across the country, but all over the world
to be featured on the websites in their own
stormtrooper armor. The expression of a shared
passion soon ignited something no one was
really expecting, Johnsons idea blossomed in
to a global phenomenon. Before anyone knew
what was happening, the Legion ranks swelled
and chapters all over the world began to form.
Garrisons, Squads and Outputs are the names
for various subdivisions in particular regions
to help facilitate the organization of events and
appearances on the local level.

Now the 501st Legion doesnt just
bring Star Wars characters to life, they work to
enhance beneficial charity events. The South
Valley Squad, a sub-unit in the Central California
Garrison chapter, has successfully supported
numerous charities and other worthwhile
events such as Valley Childrens Hospital, Make
A Wish, Break the Barriers, MDA, Special
Olympics, and Ronald McDonald House. But
the project currently closest to their hearts is
an anti-bullying initiative called Heart of the
Force!. Its a multi-club initiative, combining
forces with other Star Wars costuming clubs as
well as other organizations across the globe to
promote a sense of unity and tolerance for all
people.

The 501st Legion is open for other
mega Star Wars fans to join, the only thing you
need is a passion for the saga, be at least 18 years
of age and have a screen accurate costume for a
villain from Star Wars. Originally, the Legion
was based only on the white-armored
stormtroopers stationed aboard the
Death Star but as the group expanded
they began encompassing other
canon trooper variations and now
include other villains such as Sith
Lords and Bounty Hunters.
However, if youre under
18 dont worry, theres a
separate group called the
Galactic Academy and
it allows the younger
fans to come out
and get involved.
And
if
youre
more interested in
portraying the good side
of the Star Wars characters
youre in luck, there is a sister
organization called the Rebel Legion that youll
be able to join.

The Legion is an incredibly active
group with multiple events happening every
month, youll want to get on their website
to keep with their ever growing schedule at
CentralCaliforniaGarrison.com. One of their
upcoming events is one where you can also come
and give back to those in need. On Saturday
May 7th is the Star Wars Fan Blood Drive where
guests will not only experience the magic of Star
Wars characters coming to life with care, love
and accuracy, but all donors will also receive a
free commemorative t-shirt for contributing.

a sequencing error. We let our systems
become run down and weak, easy prey
for homeless germs and diseases. How
is it that we can get the sequence in
the proper order about so many other
things except our health?When you
wait for the germs to settle in and then
go to the doctor for an antibiotic, not
only will this drive you crazy, it can
also impact your family (shared germs),
your work (missed income, promotions,
gossip at the water cooler), and your
overall health. Taking antibiotics not
only tears up your digestive system, it
does nothing to build up your immune
system. We go to the gym to build

Even disorganized people perceive
a system in their chaos. Nature also
strives for order and demonstrates many
patterns.Physical health and emotional
wellness are no different. They both
prefer orderliness over chaos. If I asked
you whether or not you wanted to be
physical and emotional healthy, the
large majority of you would say YES!
Not many people I know enjoy being
sick.

Unfortunately, most of us also
ignore our health until it demands our
attention. We allow stress too much
influence in our lives. We forget to eat
foods that build our immune system.
Drinking enough water becomes too
inconvenient. Before we know it, we are
down for the count and have no choice
but to pay attention and take action.

Why is it that way with our
heath? Almost everything else in life we
are proactively trying to avoid negative
consequences. For example, we head to
the gas station before running out of
gas. No one wants to stop moving on
the freeway. We pack a suitcase before
traveling. Filling the suitcase after we
get home does not make sense. We cook
our dinner before we eat it. Imagine a
world where we cooked it while it was
in our stomachs. That is just plain gross.

to be grilling season before we know it, so
long as the rain doesnt make a smashing
reappearance. Perhaps youve already started,
toting out the classics with some burgers and
hot dogs. Maybe youre wondering what your
first triumph should be as a grill master. Either
way, this recipe is sure to impress this season,
if youre up for the challenge. Try your hand at
this delicious coffee-rubbed brisket.
6. Place grill rack on grill. Place the brisket in

a small roasting pan, and place pan on grill
rack on unheated side.
Ingredients
6 cups oak or hickory wood chips
2 disposable aluminum foil pans
1 tablespoon ground coffee (your choice, but
try going for a gourmet style coffee with rich
flavors)
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
2 teaspoons smoked paprika
2 teaspoons ancho chile powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 (4 1/2-pound) flat-cut brisket (about 3
inches thick)
7. Close lid; cook for 6 hours or until a meat

thermometer registers 195. Add 1 1/2 cups
wood chips every hour for first 4 hours; cover
pan with foil for remaining 2 hours. Remove
from grill. Let stand, covered, 30 minutes.
8. Unwrap brisket, reserving juices; trim
and discard fat. Place a large zip-top plastic
bag inside a 4-cup glass measure. Pour juices
through a sieve into bag; discard solids. Let
drippings stand for 10 minutes (fat will rise to
the top). Seal bag; carefully snip off 1 bottom
corner of bag. Drain drippings into a bowl,
stopping before fat reaches opening; discard
fat.
9. Cut brisket across grain into thin slices;
serve with juices.
