on the motorway

First Broadcast on December 2nd, 2015
Synopsis
What can a featuremaker find along the German
motorway? Childhood memories of endless summer
journeys and German road movies of the 70s both
stimulate the imagination. Sounds in and outside the
car, along the motorway, at service areas and in
motels build up a sonic world. The concept of actually
living in a zone that was made to pass through
changes the perspective on things you thought you
knew. But most of all, its the people their stories,
their voices, their tales told on the road. Lionel
Quantin, radiomaker from Paris with a passion for
Germany, follows all these paths and gives us fresh
ears for the German Autobahn.

Alles grau und Regen, Regen. Viele Autos, die sehr langsam fahren,
weil eine Baustelle ist. Dann sehe ich eine Brcke. Im Hintergrund
sehe ich die Masten von groen berlandleitungen. Ich sehe eine
Abfahrt: Dren/Jlich.

stehen und darauf warten, dass was passiert, Also hundert prozentig
Labyrinthhafte. Also das hat ja einerseits, was mitAlso ich kann da
still hear it today if you take a trip to the Baltic Sea. We always go
there in summer, and somewhere along the journey there are those
sections where they still have the old motorway. It was good for the
children. They always fell asleep then. We drove there in the
Trabant. Well I am still a Trabant driver. No seatbelt, maximum
speed 100. And it was loud. Yes.
And then we already had three kids at that time, so there were five
of us in a Trabant. And then our son, where Ive just been now to
help move, he sat here, the two girls were in the back and the
mother
the girls could go to sleep sometime. And one of them slept on the
rear window shelf. The resulting relevance to safety: Zero.

Also weil, ich bin
