(GIAN) Course
on
Constitutive Modelling in
Practical Geotechnical Analysis
Overview:
Geotechnical engineers deal with difficult materials
which often exhibit complex path-dependent stressstrain response. This course brings together fundamental concepts, new developments as well as some
of the recent experience in the use of constitutive
models in practical geotechnical analysis especially in
underground construction works. Finite element analysis has been used to assess ground movement in most
underground constructions. This has led to a proliferation in the use of numerical modelling. At present,
virtually every deep basement, foundation for highrise building and tunnelling project, is accompanied
by numerical analysis.
tent fashion. The course is designed to provide opportunity for the participants to interact with international
experts and discuss problems and possible solutions.
Course Contents:
The course consists of 11 half-day sessions (3-4 hours
each day) of lectures and tutorials. The lectures will
be conducted as problem based learning. The following topics will be covered:
Broad Objectives:
Conducted by
Finite element and constitutive modelling in a practical engineering setting is very different from that in a
research setting. The degree of sophistication is often
unavailable in practice where the pressure of time and
money means that standard models, such as MohrCoulomb, are used with parameters measured in
standard laboratory and field tests. This is ironical
since the consequences of modelling errors is more
serious in practical engineering than in research.
This course will improve your skills in using sophisticated numerical software, with in-depth understanding of soil behaviour and its modelling. The objective
of this course is to familiarise professional engineers
with the concepts and behaviours of commonly used
constitutive models used in finite element and numerical software so that the users acquire a clear understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of these
models and use them in a knowledgeable and compe-
This course is designed to provide insight into the recent development in engineering principles and
judgement used in resolving many common and
unique geotechnical engineering problems. Much of
the lecture material has continually been reviewed
over the past few years in order to maintain its cutting
edge content.

Lead Faculty:
Professor Fook-Hou Lee is a
faculty member at the National
University of Singapore (NUS).
He developed and commissioned
the NUS Geotechnical Centrifuge, which is the only geotechnical centrifuge in Southeast Asia. He has a strong interest in soil improvement, especially in the modelling
of soil improvement processes and characterisation of
improved soil behaviour. Dr. Lee is a registered Professional Engineer and has been consulted for many
projects.
Dr. Subhadeep Banerjee is a
faculty at Indian Institute of
Technology, Madras. His research interests include cyclic behaviour of geomaterials, seismic
soil-structure interactions and finite element analysis of complex dynamic problems.
Dr. Banerjee is directing three research groups on: (i)
Cyclic characterization of improved soils (ii) Constitutive models of soils under seismic loadings; and (iii)
Dynamic to complex soil-structure problems.
Dr. Ashish Juneja is a faculty at
Indian Institute of Technology
Bombay. His research interests
include dynamic soil behaviour,
numerical and physical modelling of underground structures
and ground improvement works. He is a consultant to
many government and private organisations. He has
received research grant from DST, MoES, DRDO and
Railways. Some of Dr. Junejas courses have been
transmitted live through ISRO's remote satellite.
