Introduction:
Safety and health in work can be important for moral and financial reasons. Good safety practices can also
reduce employee injury and illness related costs, including medical care, sick leave. Specific occupational safety and
health risk factors vary depending on the specific sector and industry. Workers are exposed to many hazards that can
greatly affect their health and well-being. Long hours, changing shifts, physically demanding tasks, violence, and
exposures to infectious diseases and harmful chemicals are examples of hazards that put these workers at risk for
illness and injury. To prevent these risks following a safety guideline is very important.
Case Study 1:
A safety health manager receives three suggestions from three different operating personnel as follows:
1. Install a drain to remove water that occasionally collects around the die-casting area.
2. Post a warning sign that advises forklift truck drivers to slow down.
3. Improve sanitation by cleaning the rest room more frequently.
Question:
There is a safety or health rationale for the correction of all three of these problems. Should they be
corrected?
Discussion:
The first problem is to install drains to remove water that is being collected in die-casting area. Water can be
very dangerous, because there are so many ways that water can ruin or destroy homes and property and even a leak
can damage ceilings and pipes. Water can seep into rugs or behind walls, and cause mold to develop. Which is why
its important that people pays attention to any and all drainage issues. And, its also crucial that drainage systems be
properly maintained.
The next problem is posting warning signs for forklift drivers to slow down. Having signs in the in the work
place is very important, it helps in reducing the risk of accidents. But theres a very big difference when it comes to
warning sign about slowing down because its really not relevant, drivers must already know what are the policies
and safety guidelines in their work but still having warning signs is still essential to drivers who are still new at the
work and those careless drivers. In some cases drivers who ignore this policy to finish the job quicker but it will just
lead to accidents, instead of finishing the job faster it will cause more problems.
Then the last problem is restroom sanitation, cleaning the restroom is one of the most important jobs to
accomplish. One of the greatest issues human are currently facing is about restroom hygiene. One of the most
affected by these problems is in places where water is scarce. Increasing concerns about hygiene have led to
nationwide outburst. Unsanitary restroom is very hazardous to humans and causes too many kinds of illness. To
solve the problem the world health organization are already made campaigns about restroom sanitation. Many
products are being made to safely clean the restrooms to avoid dangerous illnesses that it causes.
Conclusion:
These three suggestions must be implemented and should not be corrected. These safety policies and
guideline are ways to guide people to being safe and healthy. Preventing any future accidents is the main reason of
studying safety management.
