- Students will brainstorm and decide upon persuasive reasoning.
- Students will complete a persuasive writing piece.
4. Materials and Technology Resources: (Day One) Butcher paper, markers, sticky notes, push
pins, iPads, My Lucky Day by Keiko Kasza, (Day Two) Hey, Little Ant by Phillip and Hannah
Hoose, computer lab, iPads, Persuasion Map on ReadWriteThink, (Day Three) lined notebook
paper, pencils, printed Persuasion Map, (Day Four) rough drafts, pencils, colored pens, (Day
Five) rough draft, presentation lined paper, turkey cut out, scissors, glue, markers, colored
pencils, construction paper, stapler, staples, Showbie app.
5. Instructional Procedures:
a. Motivation/Engagement: (Day One) So a lot of schools in our school district have
switched from 9 month schools to year-round schools. I think year-round schools are

better for both students and teachers. To start with, you get month long brain breaks
scattered throughout the year instead of just one three month long break, which usually
causes us all to forget everything from the year before. In addition, it keeps everyone
from feeling overwhelmed, tired, and burnt out. You may think that youre in school for
more days, but youre not. Those days are just distributed throughout the year instead of
condensed into 9 months. Year-round schools are better for everyone. So what was the
purpose of me telling you all of that?
b. Developmental Activities or Learning Experiences:
Review the objectives for our persuasive writing unit.
Review the concepts and key details of persuasive writing with the class using the
already prepared What is Persuasive Writing? anchor chart.
Introduce the book My Lucky Day by Keiko Kaszo and read it to the class either
on the Elmo or in front of them on the carpet.
Discuss the elements of persuasion from the book. Have the students timed-pairshare a reason that the pig gave the fox to not eat him to a partner.
Discuss the Questions for Brainstorming anchor chart. Have students share and
write ideas on sticky notes and come put them on the butcher paper with the
corresponding question.
After we have brainstormed an appropriate amount reasons to back up our opinion
(No turkeys for Thanksgiving), have the students go back to their desks and write
down the writing prompt and their three favorite reasons in their Pages app.
(Day Two) Read the book, Hey, Little Ant to the class and have students share the
persuasion found in the book.
Have students bring their iPads along with them to the computer lab.
Have students pull up http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/
persuasion_map/ in their address bar. They will type in their names and their title,
No Turkey For Thanksgiving.
The students will have the duration of the allotted computer lab time to fill out a
persuasion map. They will use their iPads to reference their favorite reasons from
the day before and they can use it to look up convincing statistics.
Once students have finished filling out the persuasion map, they will print them
out and hold store them in their writing folders until the next day,
(Day Three) Students will transfer the ideas from their persuasion map to lined
paper and into five paragraphs.
Students will have 45 minutes to work on these rough drafts. Walk around to
ensure efficiency and thoroughness.
(Day Four) Students keep working on their rough draft.
Conference with students one on one to help them edit and revise.
Give positive encouragement and constructive feedback.
Once students have finished their rough drafts and the teacher has reviewed them,
they will rewrite their work onto pretty lined paper.
(Day Five) Students will continue finishing their final drafts.
Once they have finished, they will turn their final draft in to the teacher. They will
quickly read and grade. Then pass out the parts of their turkey.

They will color, cut, and paste, their turkeys.

c. Closure: As students finish their final drafts and craft, they will transition into their
independent work. Each week they have menus to work and they have to have all of their
assignments due by the end of the week.
d. Extension: I could have students take home their turkeys and try to actually persuade
Mom and Dad (or other relatives) not to cook or eat them for Thanksgiving. After the
holiday, have students write a reflection on their experience in persuasion.
6. Accommodations, Modifications and Differentiations for Diverse Learners: The best way
to make accommodations for this lesson is to provide individualized attention during the
different steps this lesson. There is a lot of independent work, so there are several opportunities
to meet with students. For ELLs, have students pair up with bilingual peers to help with the
writing process.
7. Assessments and Evaluation of Learning:
a. Formative: Assess students writing during the one-on-one conferences.
b. Summative: Collect final drafts and grade. Students will also upload finished pictures
of their turkeys and writing to the Showbie app.
8. Homework Assignment: Students will take their turkeys home to show their parents over the
holidays. They should try and persuade their families not to eat turkeys.
