Bus-transfer switching
Disconnectors can be used for bus
transfer switching, e. g. in double or
multiple busbar arrangements of
SF6 gas insulated substations (GIS).
Switching sequence for the current
transfer in a GIS with double busbar:
Closing of disconnector No. 2 yields
distribution of the load current I onto
the two parallel paths I1 and I2 according to the relation of the impedances of both sections. Opening of
disconnector No. 1 in the third scheme
leads to the transfer of the load current
part I1 from bus A to bus B.

IEC: The value of the rated bus-transfer current for both air- and gas-insulated
disconnectors shall be 80 % of the rated normal current. It will normally not
exceed 1600 A, irrespective of the rated normal current of the disconnector.
