Group A (210=20)
1. There are three traffic lights on your way home. As you arrive at each light
assume that it is either red ( R ) or green (G) and that it is green with probability
0.7. Construct the sample space by listing all possible eight sample events.
Assign probability to each sample event. Are the events equally likely? What is
the probability that you stop no more than one time.
2. Distinguish between correlation and regression. The city council of Kathmandu
has gathered data on number of minor accidents(Y) and the number of youth
football games(X) that occurred in town over the weekends.

i) Develop the regression equation to predict minor accidents from football games.
ii) Calculate standard error and coefficient of determination interpret the results.
iii) Calculate 95% confidence limits for population slope.

b) Calculate E(Y) = 3X+2
6. Let (X, Y) be jointly distributed random variable with probability density function
given by f(x,y) =kxy ; 0x y , 0y<1
Find
i) constant k
ii) marginal pdf of X and Y.
7. Prove that V(X+Y)= V(X)+V(Y)+2COV(X,Y)
8. Write the density function of negative exponential distribution and derive its mean
and variance.
9. Define canonical definition of chi- square distribution. Discuss some of its
properties and uses.
10. The systolic blood pressure of 20 years old women (X) is normally distributed
with mean 120mmHg and a standard deviation of 112mmHg randomly selected
20 years old women. Compute the following probabilities.
i)P(X 150)
ii) P(X 115)
iii) P(115< X< 130)
11. Define Binomial distribution. Is there any consistency in the statement that the
mean of binomial distribution is 20 standard deviation is 4. If no inconsistency is
found what is the values of p, q and n.
