Course Description:
The purpose of this course is to expose the student to concepts, issues and challenges in the
discipline of Medical Sociology. Additionally, this course seeks to reveal and analyze the
political and social forces that underlie the process of defining illness, health, and receiving
effective medical assistance.
Learning Outcomes & Competencies
Express and interpret ideas clearly, using a variety of written, oral and/or visual forms.
Integrate ones own ideas with those of others to address an issue.
Articulate and evaluate the reasons and justifications that support particular values.

Major Outcomes:
Discuss and define the discipline of Sociology and what it seeks to teach and explore.
Explain the major theoretical perspectives of Sociology.
Define and discuss major definitions, themes and concepts in Medical Sociology.
List the advantages and disadvantages of the Affordable Care Act.
Appraise the significant developments in the Health Care Industry in the last century.

Course Specific Outcomes:


At the conclusion of this course, the learner should be able to:
Discuss how inequality and access affect health and health care.
Apply the definitions, themes, and theories in Sociology to Health Care.
Identify how gender, ethnicity and social class affect health and illness and quality Health
Care.
Discuss how health and illness is socially created and defined.
Build skills in planning, organizing and managing models of Health Care Delivery.
Identify ethical issues within sociology as it relates to health care.
Identify the complexes and challenges in this area of study.
Discuss factors that promote health and illness.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND POLICIES


Participation & Attendance:
Participation in class exercises and discussion is a required part of this class. Be
prepared to be questioned and to question.
Attendance: Student attendance and punctuality are expected. Much of the material
presented in this course will be through field trips, lectures and discussions. Therefore,
attendance is extremely important.
It is your responsibility to inform the instructor as early as possible before the missed
class date or other class related activities.

Cell phones and pagers should be turned off and put away
while in class.
Lateness is a distraction to your fellow students and to the instructor.
Plagiarism: Plagiarism is a major academic offense and will be fully punished if caught.
Plagiarism means the presentation of the ideas and/or the words of someone else as ones
own.
You commit plagiarism if you use:
Any part of another persons written words without correct documentation
Any part of another persons ideas without correct documentation
This includes any part of a book, encyclopedia, magazine article, journal article,
newspaper article, CD-ROM, or website used without correct documentation.
EXAMS: There will be a mid-term and final exam given in this course

Homework: All homework should be submitted on or before the due dates.


Group Projects: Students will form group of 2 to 3 persons and select a topic (see topic list)
and write a paper of 10-15 pages using the attached format. Students may choose to present an
oral presentation if desired. Space is limited for oral presentations however.

Group Projects
During the semester you will be required to complete a group paper or presentation
related to Medical Sociology. The project paper should have one-inch margins, be
double-spaced, and written grammatically. It will be a minimum of ten (10) pages. You
will need to use a minimum of 5 academic sources such as articles and books for this
assignment as instructed. Use websites sparingly. Websites may NOT be your sole
sources cited for projects or the majority of sources cited. You should also use APA style
to format the project paper citations and references. You may be expected to go to sites
on the Web like The New York Times to access articles as directed. The group project
may require fieldwork outside of class. Guidelines for this minimum 10-15-page class
project paper/ or presentation is attached. Should the student group elect to do an oral
presentation of their work, it should be 15 to 20 minutes in length with appropriate
PowerPoint presentations, visuals or other modes of presentation.
Note: Project papers should be submitted prior to or on or before the due date. Project
papers submitted late will be subjected to a late penalty.
