*This media center policy formation is made up. All are based on an
ideal library. I used the example provided as a template.
LUCAS LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER POLICY
The mission of the Lincoln Community School District is to instruct,
develop, assist and support the Lincoln Community in order to prepare
students for the future and create lifelong learners.
The mission of the Lucas Library is to empower students to critically
think about their learning, ethically use information, and become
lifelong readers. Our mission will be accomplished through
collaboration with Lucas staff, home and community. Our school library
will be guided by the AASL 21st Century Learner Standards.
Standards for the 21st Century Learner
1. Inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge.
2. Draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to
new situations, and create new knowledge.
3. Share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as
members of our democratic society.
4. Pursue personal and aesthetic growth. (American Association of
School Librarians, 2007).
CIRCULATION
The Lucas Library Media Center will provide undeniable access of
materials to students. The chief aim of any circulation system is to
facilitate the use of materials and ensure the accessibility of these
materials to the users of the media center (Morris, 2010, p. 442).
-All books will be processed through the automated circulation system
from The Library Corporation.
-A Codabar barcode will identify all materials, including multiple copies
of resources.
-The length of a loan period is fifteen days.
-A hold may be placed on a book, but must be checked out within two
days.
-A limit on books checked out is five.
-No student will be allowed to check out books if they have materials
that are overdue.

-All overdue notices will be given to students individually.

-No fines or fees will be given to students with overdue checkouts.
-Teachers may check out books for any time needed.
INVENTORY
The Lucas Library Media Center will be accountable for all materials
entering and leaving its facility. Theft detection devices will be placed
at the entrance and exit of the Lucas Library Media Center. Most of
these devices involve a system of sensitizing and desensitizing library
materials by placing an adhesive or tag on the material that can be
activated or deactivated by an electronic device (Morris, 2010,p.449).
All out of date, unused, duplicate and damaged materials will be
weeded out of the circulation in the Lucas Library Media Center as seen
fit to do so.
Inventory will take place prior to the start of the school year, at the end
of the first semester, as well as the last week of school.
PERSONNEL
The library media specialist will assume leadership in planning,
developing, and evaluating a program that meets the needs of the
faculty, students and community (Morris, 2010, p. 157). They will be
knowledgeable in all areas of library and media, including computer
technology, audiovisuals, collaboration, circulation and instruction.
The library media secretary will prepare materials needed in the library
for the librarian and classes being held in the library. The media
secretary will also circulate materials and carry out business operations
within the library.
Any library media volunteer will be directed and advised by the media
specialist with such tasks as shelving books, locating research
materials and circulation deskwork. Any volunteer must present him or
herself in a professional manner and follow the Lucas Library rules. If
the rules are not followed, the volunteer may be dismissed.
