Autism and Related Conditions


Who should take this course?
Any health care professionals (medical, nursing and allied
health), educators (primary, secondary, FE and HE), social care
professionals and psychologists who wish to develop their
understanding, skills and leadership in Autism.

Attendance pattern
Students are required to attend the University for 1 week (5
consecutive days) for each module in Part One. Attendance
during Part Two is negotiated with the supervisor.

Diagnosis and Assessment (20 Credits)

Module Description:
This module will explore the various approaches used to diagnose Autism and related
conditions from the medical, social and educational perspective. It will build upon the
neurobiology involved in Autism, evaluate different assessment techniques relating
them to the processes of gaining a diagnosis (child and adult) and linking them to the
assessment of need. It will further explore the evidence base for the various diagnostic
and assessment procedures in relation to service provision and planning.

Foundations of Behaviour (20 Credits)

Module Description:
This module will introduce students to the concepts involved in the normal and
abnormal development of the brain in terms of the physiological and psychological
aspects. Additionally, it will explore how altered neurodevelopment is often described
as a component of the behavioural aspects of Autism presentation. Furthermore,
students will be introduced to the theoretical concepts of Behavioural Analysis and its
potential role in the management of Autism.

Living with Autism (20 Credits)

Module Description:
This module will explore the history of autism to inform how people lived with autism
(including parents and carers) previously to the present day, critically review the
impact of autism (pre- and post- diagnosis) upon the individual and family, explore the
issue of parental stress, discuss how our understanding of the impact of autism can
have an input into service planning and delivery, appraising integrated services and the
influence of policy changes on the support provided (clinically, socially and
educationally).

Management of Autism (20 Credits)

Module Description:
This module will explore the use of various interventions, treatments and approaches
used to support people of all ages who live with Autism and how these approaches
could be incorporated within the clinical, educational and social care services as part of
an overall integrated management strategy. Additionally, this module will discuss how
you can involve parents, caregivers and the individual themselves in a supportive role
for the management of Autism.

Child and Adult Services for Autism
(20 Credits)

Module Description:
This module will explore and evaluate the issues for the provision of Autism related
services (including clinical, social and educational) for children and adults with a
suspected or actual diagnosis of Autism. Additionally, it will debate the process for the
transition from child services to adult services to explore how current provision is
reflective of need (or not) and how such a transition can be managed. Furthermore, it
will evaluate recent policy initiatives in terms of how they can be incorporated and
integrated into Autism related services.

Law and Policy for Autism (20 Credits)

Module Description:
This module will explore various aspects of statutory law and its relevance to the
provision of Autism related services. Furthermore, it explores the various levels of
engagement people with autism can have with the criminal justice, civil law and other
legal systems. Additionally, the module will critically review and discuss local and
national policy directives relating to Autism.
