The issue of delaying school starting times has become fiery debate for one and

all. Josh Bakers speech for his fellow year 11 students and teacher claims that
school starting time is too early for students during their adolescence stage. He
begins promptly with reason and logic and then shifts to deductive reasoning.
The images provided is true to the contention that schools commence to early.
Baker structures his argument around a series of questions posed to the
audience and scientific evidence to support his stance, which conveys the
impression that school instigation times should be postponed; such as delaying
them by an hour, which was previously seen as unrealistic. He begins by
questioning the students, How are you feeling, which is intended to engage the
pupils, further inquiring, Are you tired, which is calculatedly placed to state the
targeted audience. Baker then uses a pun, .some of you are falling asleep,
which fortifies his contention that the early commencement is not beneficial to
students as they sleep during class. He revisits the issue through the use of a
rhetorical question, Are we Lazy, which is positioned to get the audience
thinking, who is to blame? Baker furthers his argument through the use of
scientific evidence proving that, sleep pattern shifts during puberty, which
serves the purpose of coaxing the audience to his contention. He reinforces his
argument by adding inclusive language, We naturally stay up, which is
potentially used to persuade the audience that the sleeping habits cant be
avoided.
Baker then highlights his contention by questioning teachers and principals by
arguing that schools should do whatever they can do to help us achieve our
best. This is potentially used to persuade the majority of people to back his
argument that the commencement times of schools should be pushed back. He
further fortifies his argument through adding an image of the effects of sleep
deprivation. The image provided outlines the effect of lack of sleep, which
supports his contention because he intentionally shows the negative impacts
sleep deprivation has on students, on the other hand it shows the positive
impacts that changing the school times to start later will have on students, such
as a lower risk in diabetes, as provided by the supplied image. He furthers his
argument by supplying the significant relationship between sleep duration,
mental and physical health. Such as Neuropsychological function decrease
(impaired learning).
Baker then reinforces his contention by reclaiming scientific evidence that shows
sleep loss has serious consequences on academic performance, anxiety rates,
stress and depression, which is potentially used to stipulate the audience to feel
that the evidence is here to prove that Bakers stance is the correct stance. He
then furthers his stance by putting forward examples of schools which are
making the change, using the inclusive language, 10:30-5:15 for people like
me, potentially making other students feel that the time is also fitting for them,
coaxing the student to take his stance. The image portrayed below evidently
shows the effects of what sleep deprivation can have on people. Depicting the
physical and mental effects of what lack of sleep can do to a person. This can
possibly lead the students to wonder whether they are facing the same issue and
measure themselves to the image. He then questions the audience and himself,
stating what issues need to be resolved. He fortifies this by then presenting the
argument, Why cant we harden up?, Which is potentially used to show the

stupidity of the question, which he reinforces by statement from Mark

Zuckerberg, Progress is impossible without change
