What is Inspiring Technology?

Inspiring Technology is concerned with establishing
a new scientific foundation which integrates human
system theories with modern technologies to
develop a new generation of products that can
simultaneously inspire human potentials while
achieving their intended functional purposes
Inspiring Technology is related to, but different
from, bio-engineering or bio-technology
It extends western human system theories to include the
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) approaches
It is an application-driven basic research in system
engineering, design methodology, and product development
Inspiring products are NOT medical treatment devices
They inspire human potentials, not cure human diseases
They are transparently embedded in existing products

Some Basics of TCM

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)(A)
An ancient system of medicine and health care that is
based on the concept of balanced qi, or vital energy,
that flows throughout the body

Qi (Chi or chee)
The Chinese term for vital energy or life force

Yang
The Chinese concept of positive energy and forces in
the universe and human body

Yin
The Chinese concept of negative energy and forces in
the universe and human body

Only when our Qi is clear of distorting emotions can

the "mind/body connection" function effectively to
accelerate recovery from physical problems

Some Basics of Western Medicine

Duplex communications between
human systems and the environments
Specialized sense organs receive a
stimulus which is translated and
encoded into our nervous system
Each of the 5 senses activates a
separate area of the cerebral cortex,
the sheet of neurons that makes up
outer layer of the brains hemispheres
The stimulus is carried through 3 relay
stations that perform primary analysis
for the brain where further processing
and analyzing taken place
Decisions and orders proceed to
nervous pathways which carry
information to muscles that perform
and act upon the environments

The western medicine viewpoint

The Cartesian philosophy: body & mind (separate & interact)
A hierarchical structure: anatomy and physiology
A single system consisting of many components within

Disease is either physical or mental: a pill for every ill

Disease is due to, and cure can come from, external forces

The traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) viewpoint

The Yin-Yang philosophy: body/mind is a functioning whole;
organ has mental/physical function, and must be balanced
The Qi (virtual energy) flows along energy pathways (meridians)
throughout the body to affect ones Yin-Yang balance

Holistic/fractal structure: each organ has a map of whole body

Human has multi-layer systems within, and interacts with outside
systems (i.e., the haven-earth-human concept)

Disease is due to internal imbalance of Yin-Yang

Body can cure itself, if it is pushed in the correct way
Copyright 2002; Stephen Lu

Inspire Human Potentials with Modern Technologies

Inspiring The Human Systems

We take the TCM holistic view toward human systems
A human is multi-layer systems within systems
Each organ is a system itself, with a map of the whole body
The most inspired state of a human is achieved when the
body and mind (i.e., whole human system) is fully balanced
between Yin and Yang
Affecting the flow of Qi can change the Yin-Yang balance, and
hence the states of human inspiration
Qi flows within human systems is effected by environmental
factors (e.g., time, date, orientation, location, etc.)

To inspire human systems is to affect the Qi flows to

keep the human states in balance

keep the human states from moving away from balance
Help to return the human states to balance
Maintain the balance states when environments change

Some Principles of Bio-Electricity

Human body has bioelectricities which are signals
that control heartbeat, stimulate muscles to action,
and perform many other necessary functions
The nerve center can receive the signal via our neutral
network and use the feedback signal to organize the
mechanism of the specific organ
The blight signals (caused by illness) will lead to the
disharmonic of nerve activities
Some positive signal can be generated using exterior
stimulator and harmonize the nerve response

When electromagnetic frequencies (or fields of

energy) within our bodies go out of balance, disease
and illness can occur
These imbalances also disrupt the body's chemical makeup

TENS
TENS was designed to relieve pain by sending gentle electrical impulses through
the skin to the nerves. This suppresses pain by blocking the pain signals before
they reach the brain. TENS sends these gentle impulses through lead wires that
are connected to electrodes. These electrodes are strategically placed at
appropriate pain sights on the body.

EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation)
The brain sends a nerve impulse
to the "motor point" of muscles.
This signal is a message to the
muscles to expand and contract.
Electrodes are placed over the
motor points of the muscle group
to be exercised. When the
stimulation is applied through the
pads, the signal finds its way to
these motor points and causes the
muscle to expand and contract.
This makes it possible to duplicate
a conventional exercise, similar to
an isometric exercise.

Galvanic Stimulation
Direct current creates an electrical field
over the treated area that,
theoretically, changes blood flow. The
positive pad behaves like ice, causing
reduced circulation to the area under
the pad and reduction in swelling. The
negative pad behaves like heat,
causing increased circulation,
reportedly speeding healing. The
Galvanic Stimulator (direct current) is
the best modality for iontophoresis
treatments.

Interferential (INF) Generator

Interferential current is essentially a deeper form of TENS. It generate higher

frequencies interfere with the transmission of pain messages at the spinal cord
level. Because of the frequency, the Interferential wave meets low impedance
when crossing the skin to enter the underlying tissue. This deep tissue
penetration can be adjusted to stimulate parasympathetic nerve fibers for
increased blood flow. Interferential Stimulation differs from TENS because it
allows a deeper penetration of the tissue with more comfort (compliance) and
increased circulation.

Microcurrent Electrical Neuromuscular Stimulator (MENS)

Copyright 2002; Stephen Lu

Microcurrent, due to its close proximity of our own bodys current, is thought to
work on a more cellular level. It has been theorized that healthy tissue is the
result of the direct flow of electrical current throughout the body. Electrical
balance is disrupted when the body is injured at a particular site, causing the
electrical current to change course. The use of Microcurrent over the injured
site is thought to realign this flow, thus aid in tissue repair. It's been found that
ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) in the cell helps to promote protein synthesis
and healing. The lack of ATP due to trauma of the tissue results in the
decreased production of sodium and an increase in metabolic wastes, which is
perceived as pain. The use of Microcurrent at an injured area helps to realign
the bodys electrical current, increase the production of ATP, resulting in
increased healing and recovery, as well as blocking the pain that is perceived.

Magnetic Energies & Human Systems

A low pulsating magnetic field can stimulate cell
metabolism which helps to
Increase blood circulation and release of oxygen from free
radicals
Strengthen the immune system
Promote metabolic processing of toxins
Support the healing process

Principles of Bio-Magnetic Energy

A cell produces its own energy, called ATP (Adenosine
Triphosphate). This energy is necessary for movement of the
body, building up and breaking down molecules, and
transporting substances across cell membranes. To produce
energy, a cell needs oxygen and about 90 other substances,
including enzymes, glucose, and nutrients. Cells also produce
carbon dioxide, water, and waste products.
An electro-magnetic field of correct magnitude and frequency
cause reposition of molecular plasma membrane of cells. This
may influence membrane enzyme system by favorably altering
molecules in much the same manner as chemical reactions.

Principles of Bio-Thermal Energies

Heat can expand the section of the vessel and
capillaries which stimulate blood circulation. This
increases the bodies energy reserve, transport more
oxygen and accelerates the metabolic exchange
between blood and body tissue.
By using the laser and ultrasound technology, the
microwave can penetrate to the insight tissue and
achieve a certain temperature which leads to desired
thermal effect (either coagulation, vaporization,
carbonization or melting the tissue).

TDP BioSpectrum Lamps
The TDP is a new generation of device that generates and
delivers far infrared for deep heating therapy and treatment.
Human body is a low energy irradiating source, which can emit
many kinds of physical signal covering from infrared ray to weak
microwave. The Combination of physical parameters, frequency
and spectrum constitutes the human body BFS.
The maximal energy absorption occurs only at the time when
the frequency, which can give rise to resonance with living
body, appears.
BFS apparatus was designed and manufactured on the basis of
the bionics theory, it is a vibration generator and can emit the
frequency and Spectrum similar to those of human body.

Ultrasound Therapy
The mechanisms of action of ultrasound should be
considered in terms of four categories.
The thermal effect, which relates to the heat generated into
the deeper tissues and especially the collagen, and the
benefits derived from this
The mechanical effect, which relates to the high-speed
vibrations that act on the tissue just like a micro massage.
The cavitational effect, which produces countless
microscopic droplets of oxygen from the vibration process
The biological effects, which include blood vessel dilatation,
improved blood flow and circulation, sonopheresis, improved
lymph flow, muscle relaxation, reduced inflammation, and
pain relief

Acoustic Energies & Human Systems

Acoustic waves cause the eardrum, 3
tiny bones of the middle ear, to vibrate
The last bone jiggles a flexible layer of
tissue at the base of the cochlea
This pressure sends wave rippling along
the basilar membrane, stimulating
some of its hair cells
These cells then send a rapid-fire code
of electrical signals about frequency,
intensity and duration of a sound
The messages travel through auditory
nerve fibers that run from the base of
the hair cells, the center of the cochlea,
and from there to the brain
After several relays within the brain,
the messages reach the auditory areas
of the cerebral cortex, which processes
and interprets these signals as sound
Copyright 2002; Stephen Lu

34

Inspire Human Potentials with Modern Technologies

Western Principle of Acoustic Therapy

Acoustic is a kind of vibrated energy
Response to sound is the physical phenomenon in which
different frequencies of sound stimulate the body to vibrate in
different areas
Sound is linked to the physical body by the eighth and tenth
cranial nerves, carrying sound impulses through the ear and
skull to the brain
Music can moves through the auditory cortex directly to the
center of the emotional responses, and can also activate
memory flow across the corpus callosum, creating harmony
between the hemispheres of the brain
Music can help define our emotions, compose human moods,
and evoke imagery. It can be described as a carrier wave for
consciousness.
Music listening has been demonstrated to help relieve pain and
to speed up recovery

TCM Principle of Acoustic Therapy

Music represents the harmonious interaction of
heaven and earth (the Chinese Taoist theory)
It is the resonant of nature, and the basic means of
improving and refining human life
The harmonious sound is an ideal external support
when applying onto human body

Human body is a holistic unit

Outer part of human body can reflect status of inner organ
TCM expert can distinguish between 5 sounds of a patient's
voice and 5 musical notes on listening diagnosis
Illness can arise when inner rhythms are disturbed

Acoustic stimulation can be useful

Correct the imbalance, harmonize the meridians, uncover
motion and invigorate the bodys energy by offering
acoustic waves with appropriate frequency

Basics of Traditional Chinese Music

Traditional Chinese Music was
composed in the pentatonic scales,
where each mode would span two or
more octaves
The tones and modes were related to
the Five Elements
The Five Elements Tonal System
employs concepts from East and West

Today, except for traditional

orchestras, the Chinese play in the
diatonic scales
Pop musicians often use pentatonic
scales in solos with the harmony
containing chords built from the
diatonic scales
Some chords may even contain tones
outside the scale

Chinese
Tones

West

Traditional Chinese Music was composed in the

pentatonic scales, Which are based on the Five
Elements; we can call it The Five Elements Tonal
System.

Tone in West is distinguished from A tone to G tone. The

audio tone in west can be calculate based on the law of
octave, that is, a higher octaves frequency is twice of the
previous one.

Music Therapy
It is the enhancement of human capabilities through
planned use of musical influences on brain functions
Music triggers whole brain processes/function which directly
affect cognitive, emotional, and physical functions/abilities

It is based on the principle of resonance

The precise harmony contained in this particular musical
structure resonates inside the organism, from the ears to
the brain and from the brain to the various organs
The harmony inside the music stimulates the re-setting of
the biological order to harmonize and regenerate the whole
body, bringing it gradually towards regeneration

It is also an important tool for prevention

It is considered as harmonic holistic information medicine

Brainwave Entrainment
Our brain produces waves of currents that flow
throughout its neural pathways
Brainwave type is defined by the frequency of pulsing, and
particular rate of pulsation determines the state of mind
Common brainwave patterns: Delta Alpha, Theta, Beta.

Brainwave Entrainment uses low frequency waves to

entrain brainwave, driving mind to a desired status
When our left ear and right ear hear different, but similar,
frequencies, our brain can distinguish the difference
between these two coherent frequencies, and generate the
third (low) frequency
This frequency conveys to the neural network, which uses
neurotransmitters to initiate changes in brain-wave activity
Topographic brainwave maps illustrate the state-changing

The Entrainment Mechanisms

When two similarly tuned pianos in one room and
and one key is stroked, the stretched chord attached
to the same key on the other piano will vibrate
Similar to the above phenomena, when the brain's
state (frequency) is stimulated by other close
frequency, it will gradually trend to that frequency
When sweep from one frequency to another, the
starting frequency should be close to current brain
state. The sweep speed should be gentle enough
then brain's state can changes steadily with it.

Principle of Directly Vibrated Stimulation

Each person has a frequency which is altered by
illness or imbalance, and can also be altered with
the application of energy
Body responds to sound and any types of vibration energy
Direct stimulation of living cellular tissue using sound
frequency vibration has shown marked cellular metabolism,
and, therefore, mobilization of a cellular healing response

We can use vibrated energy to stimulate the

acupuncture points of human body directly
The vibration of the tuning fork can stimulate the point
with a pure tone, which cannot be generated by any
musical instrument except a synthesizer
