Objectives of the session:

In this session we have verb to be as the main grammar topic, and as the most
important social responsibility subject, we have the recognition of the concept of
culture and history. The first objective of the class is to bring up and review the
main grammatical concepts about the verb to be, which are the following:
1) 3 different forms according to the personal pronoun
2) Contextualized Uses:

Giving personal information (name, age, profession, nationality)

Expressing an emotional status or adjectives ( Personal pronoun + verb to be
+ adjective)

Another objective of the class is to have students practicing the verb to be through
active participation in a production stage. To include the social responsibility
component, we will introduce a brief concept about culture and family.
Opening phase (10 minutes)
In this part of the class we are going to introduce ourselves in a short form. We will
also talk about some basic rules of the workshop.
Presentation and practice phase (35 min)
In this part of the session, we present the topic by means of a conceptual map
which is built in the whiteboard as the explanation is being carried out. In this part
of the session, we are going to encourage students to create sentences alongside
the process of explaining. In order to support the production of sentences, we will
display images on the TV screen with vocabulary that is related to the uses we are
reviewing.
The vocabulary is oriented towards some professions and a few nationalities. When
we have encouraged them to create some speaking sentences using to be, we can
go onto the social responsibility component. As we have mentioned the vocabulary
of nationalities, we are going to introduce the topic with the question, Why we are
Colombian?.
The main concepts of this part of the class are:

We are Colombian because we share a culture and a history.

Culture is compound by a set of familiar customs and beliefs.

To explain this, we will present a quick review of a few Colombian customs and
beliefs, all the slides will contain phrases using the verb to be. One of us will talk a
few words about each custom and each belief.

The concepts will be written on the blackboard, this will help them to understand
better even if they do not understand all the content of the presentation.
Production and performance phase (40 min)
In this part of the class we will make students to talk to each other in order to
practice the verb to be. Each student will receive a copy of a chart where they will
find 5 different questions, they have to fill those questions by asking their peers
about that information. Once they have written down the information, we are going
to gather up to socialize the information that they have collected.
The information they have to ask is related to personal information and a final
question about a custom or a belief that they have in their families, In this way we
are practicing the verb to be and we are giving importance to the social
responsibility aspect which demands of culture recognition and awareness.
Closing phase: 5 (min)
In this stage, we are going to socialize the information that the students collected
from their partners. We will have them speaking about the personal information. To
do so they will need to use personal pronouns , the verb to be and a series of
nouns.
Once all the students have participated in the socialization we close the class.
Adjuncts.
This is the format of the activity.
