Pathophysiology of Patent Ductus Arteroisus (PDA)

Predisposing Factors: Precipitating Factors:

Premature None

Patency of the ductus with systemic and pulmonary circulatory

system results in significant shunting of blood from left to right,

Systemic vascular resistance is always higher

than that of the pulmonary circulation

Heart Increase left to right shunting Pulmonary

Volume overload of the left

atrium and left ventricle
Left atrial and left
ventricular dilatation
Cardiac arrhythmias.
Left ventricle dysfunction
Lungs  Volume overload of the
Pulmonary arteries and
 Decrease lung volume veins
 Decrease compliance  Structural changes
 Increase intrapulmonary shunt
 Altered reactivity to dilate,
constrict, or stimulate
Symptoms: General Symptoms:
Hypoxia, Hypercarbia,  strong pulses
Acidosis,  heart murmur
 enlarged heart
size
 respiratory
 With Medical Intervention

 Early detection/ diagnosis of the disease

 Administration of drugs ( indomethacin, ibuprofen,
and digoxin )

Will undergo surgery (ligation)
