1.4
billion
people has no access
to electricity

Secured, reliable and affordable electricity

supply is a prerequisite to poverty alleviation

Todays world is made possible through the

industrial revolution because of cheap
energy
4

Rapid depletion of oil and gas and increasing global consumption lead to
energy shortages and rising costs

Renewable energy is often very costly,

uneconomical, geographically unsuitable or
unproven
5

At least
25,000
deaths
each
year
due to underground
mining accidents

There are trillions of

surface coal resources
out there that can be
excavated safely
However, it is not economical to do so today
7

What if we could realize this potential today

GEO-COAL Technology A simple coal upgrading

technology that brings affordable energy to our world

Different types of coal

COAL is the most readily available natural resource that is in abundance
and an extremely cost effective source of energy

1. High Rank Coal : Bituminous, Anthracite

(Low Moisture, High Energy Content)

2. Low Rank Coal : Peat, Lignite, Sub-bituminous

(High Moisture, Low Energy Content)

Low Rank Coal Unrealised Energy Supply

A. Low Rank Coal (Brown coal) :

Currently account for about: 65% of current coal resources and 50% of coal
reserves globally
Massive amounts of untapped low rank coal resources widely available
Use is limited : Low heating value, high handling cost and spontaneous
combustion but also contain lower sulfur and lower ash contents

B. Potential of low rank coal:

If these coals could be efficiently and economically processed to yield a

higher-grade, high-heating value product, there will be :

1. Enormous increase and economic benefit on the energy supply

2. Lower environmental impact compared to high rank coal

Solution: Coal Upgrading

A successful coal upgrading process has to be
economical and address the issues of
spontaneous combustion, decrepitation
(fines generation), and moisture
reabsorption.

12

What is GEO-COAL Technology ?

GEO-COAL Technology is a world wide patent-pending technology
that fully maximize the potential of coal in an economical and
environmental aspect.
It upgrades low rank coal (low energy content) into high rank coal
(high energy content) through an extremely low cost process.

To date, different raw coal from various coal mines have been successfully
processed and upgraded by Geo-Coal technology into GEO-LITE, GEO-HI and

20

Why GEO-COAL Technology

Natural high rank coal :
Limited and diminishing reserve base
Increasingly high production and distribution costs
Releases more pollutants during combustion

Natural low rank coal :

Limited market available for low rank coal and the minimum CV accepted
is 3,200 (gar) kcal/kg, any coal below this energy value has minimal market
value.
High handling and transportation cost due to high moisture content and
high propensity toward spontaneous combustion
High CO2 emissions and low levels of efficiency at power plants

Indonesia with population 250 million, with 100,000 MW ~
equals to 200 watt/capita

* In China, they currently need over 3 billion tons of coal per year

25

Benefits of GEO-COAL Products

1. Higher Quality Coal: 50% to 100 % increased energy content from initial
low rank coal feedstock

2. Increases Profit Margins: Upgraded coal fetches a higher selling price,

hence higher profit margins and increased market opportunities for coal
producers

3. More Eco-friendly: GEO-COAL products maintain environmental properties

of low-rank coal, i.e. lower sulphur and ash content

4. Increased Energy Supply: GEO-COAL taps on the potential of stranded

coal resources, e.g. 70% of untapped coal resources in Indonesia alone

5. Simple and Economical: GEO-COAL technology requires lower CAPEX and

OPEX than existing technologies, short installation times, and no briquetting is
needed.

26

Benefits of GEO-COAL Products

6. Increased Performance at Power Plant: Higher heating value of the
coal increases efficiency during combustion leading to higher power outputs

7. Versatile: GEO-COAL can be used for a wide range of high moisture, low
calorific value coals abundant all around the world, as well as for other organic
materials such as bamboo, wood and even wastes

8. Enhanced Transport Efficiency:

Upgraded coals reduced moisture

content saves extensive transportation and handling costs

9. Reduced Risk of Spontaneous Combustion: Chemical and physical

properties of the upgraded coal are significantly more stable than the initial coal

Coal is being delivered to PLN by barges, unloaded at the

port and transported via conveyors belts to the stockyard
(PLN have started to built a huge shed to cover the coal
stock from the rain) with 30 days worth of coal stockpiling
capacity.

Aerial view of PLN Labuan power plant

Discharging port/Conveyor belt

The GEO-COAL plant is strategically located and built

beside the stockyard. Once coal arrives at the stockyard, it
will be transported to a crusher (newly being built) right
beside the GEO-COAL plant and crushed to 0 30mm
before it enters the GEO-COAL plant for processing
(upgrading and drying).

Stockpile

Crusher under construction

Modular system

Cooling zone under construction

Crushed coal is then delivered via conveyor belt into the

plant for upgrading. Coal will remain in the GEO-COAL unit
for about 8 minutes undergoing high temperatures of the
GEO-COAL process before exiting to the cooling zone
where the coal will be cooled and transported back to the
stockyard.

Conveyor belts

The upgraded coal will then be transported to the main

power generating unit and will be pulverized and injected to
the combustion chambers for electricity generation.
