SOME DOCUMENTS OF VIKRAMA BAHU

OF KANDY
BY

H. W. ConnrxoroN.

An attempt to fix the chronology of the reign of SEn6'

eammata Vikrama.Bdhu of Kandy has been made by the
writer in an article destined for Epi'graphia Zeylanica on
the Gadaladeliya rock inscription of the eighth year of this
king. It is the object of this paper to present to the student
thelexts of the various other documents, by means of which
the initial point and the duration of the reign c&n be
doterminird.

I.

The Vannipola sannasa is dated in the year follow-

ing the twentieth of the reign, The existing

document

undoubtedly is spurious, the contents being scratched on a

copper plate in a modern hand. There seems, however,
to be no reason for suspecting the text itself' This is not
the text ol a sannasa proper, but of a tu(ultata' By it land
in Vannipala in the Atapattu corps commander's division
belonging to Siduruv646 Udunuvara was granted by the
king at the palace of Senkadagala to two craftsmen in
recompense for a certain painting.
The expression atapattu sntnd, yaka bhtgaye is intereet'
ing. The Niyangampd,ya record speaks of the eight Sdnd'
nd,yakas. Our Atapattu S6nd,ndyaka must be the officer
in later times known

as

Maha Atapattuv6 Ldkam-mahatma'yd'

The eight Sdndnd, yakas thus rvere the forerunnere of the

ohiefs of the Palace military LEkamas.
II. The next document, the Kobbfl, kaduva Vihdr6
sonnasa is of importance. Though it now seems to exist
only in a copy (Temple Lands Commissioners' Case No. 291),
there can be no <loubt of its authenticity. Its style is in
accoxd with that of similar doouments of the Kott period'

royalty. I am indebted
for this traditional account to the late ir. T. B.
Kobbekaduwe. As Vikrama B6,hu of Kandy constantly
is confused with Vikrama Behu IIL of Galpoh,
it
is possible
that the story refers to a queen of the first
named king.
The Elder Ratnavalli belonged to the Mehenavara
clan of
the royal family.
