Process Routing Sheet

Routing is a series of actions to be performed to achieve a

particular goal. In a manufacturing or production unit, it defines the
exact process by which a product is to be manufactured or a service
is to be delivered. Thus the purpose of routing is to spell the most
efficient and economical way to perform a function. Routing
directions are prepared keeping in mind the number of employees,
types of equipment available; their capacity and run time.
Route sheet:
It is the map or the blueprint of the manufacturing process in a production unit. It provides
the exact location of the various processes of the unit. A route sheet determines the
sequence or order of arrangement of various departments in a facility. Thus, a route sheet
is a document which has information and data inputs and a step wise listing of all the
processes or transactions performed. It also contains details such as date and time,
remarks, log in/out, point of contact etc.
A typical route sheet contains the following information :
Identification and sequence of work arrangement.
Symbol or sign of a component of the product

Appraisal or assessment of the process or method which is being followed.

Computing the number of units to be produced.

Machines and tools used in the operation, their run time, efficiency and capacity.

Evaluation of the entire production process

To understand the process of routing better, an example of a route sheet is given of a

pencil manufacturing unit.

Raw materials reqd: graphite, clay, wax, cedar, ferrule, pumice, rubber, metal, prongs,
dyes, pigments, gum.
Symbols used in the manufacturing process:
O = Operation
I = Inspection
T = Transportation
S = Storage
D = Delays

Given above was a rough route sheet of a pencil manufacturing unit. At each stage the
inspection of the labour and machinery is done and delays are accounted for. Log book is
maintained to record the time taken by machines to complete the work and by employees to
enter in/out time. After the manufacturing is complete, the product is run through quality
control.

GANTT CHART DEFINE MILESTONES.

Gantt chart is a diagrammatic or graphical depiction or illustration of time duration of
activities against a given time period corresponding to the master schedule. It is a
horizontal bar chart to keep track of progress of a project. It is a very important tool for
planning and scheduling of a project. It helps in assessing and analyzing the progress of a
particular project.
ADVANTAGES OF A GANTT CHART
1. While planning and scheduling a project, Gantt chart depicts the time duration of each
individual activity or job entailing a project.
2. It defines the order in which each activity is to be performed for a smooth and scheduled
progress of the project.
3. It is a very important monitoring aid as it illustrates the lead or lag time of all the
activities.
4. It also depicts the corrective steps taken to put the project back on schedule in case of a
delay.
5. It also illustrates the work dependencies between successive activities.
6. It also defines the milestones achieved.
7. It also specifies resource allocation for each task and the subsequent usage of these
resources.
8. It also shows the status of each activity/job as it is completed, whether or not it has been
on schedule.
9. It is also an important reporting tool.
10. It helps in evaluation and appraisal of the progress of the project.
11.
Example of a basic Gantt chart is as follows: it shows the progress of a project which has
been divided into 3 minor tasks or jobs labeled A, B and C. These have been completed
over an year with equal time of 4 months allocated to them. The horizontal blocks show the
progress.

Gantt charts can also be made for a daily schedule. These are particularly handy for
academic institutions which by means of a Gantt chart can depict the daily progress of
curriculum subjectwise. A milestone Gantt chart illustrates important events in a facility. A
gantt chart for dependencies is also a very important tool for tracking progress. For
example, if we follow the development of a product from its conception to delivery, a Gantt
chart would illustrate the exact time duration taken by every individual activity like, market

research, conception and design, planning ( budget and resource allocation), production,
feedback, remedial or corrective actions, evaluation.
The purpose of process planning is to set a routing that will transform raw material into
the form specified and defined by the engineering drawing. It is generally based on
human skill and intuition. A routing, once set, may be revised only by a process planner.
This robs the manufacturing system of its natural flexibility. The point of view of this
book is that routing is a mathematical problem in combinatorics that does not require
the expertise of a process planner. Therefore the task of the process planner is not to
set routing but rather to generate a roadmap of possible processes, and let each
discipline generate routing according to the immediate on-line manufacturing state.
Such an approach makes manufacturing simple and efficient.
