With ambitions to promote education, further

Strathmores aspirations of an ecofriendly future,
and funnel thousands of dollars back into the
municipalitys pockets, the Town of Strathmore
entered into a partnership with the local recycle
yard to launch a three-year pilot project entailing the separation of organics, grass clippings,
and garden waste from regular waste disposal.
H&H Huxted received approval from the town
last week for a proposal to encourage the removal of yard scraps, grass clippings, and garden waste from solid waste, thus removing the
unnecessary 300 tonnes of added weight to landfills in the summer months totalling $31,500.
This to me is a no brainer, said Councillor
Bob Sobol, a representative on the sustainability
committee. Its been something that Ive been
trying to work towards for years. I appreciate the household organics is a new thing. We
werent able to do it because we had no place
to compost this product, but now we do. Obviously the next step is to work on that, but the
grass it just drives me crazy to see all that weight
go in. This is dead weight and every bag costs
our taxpayers money and theres absolutely no
reason for it.
Last year, landfill tonnage of 2,709 signalled
a significant drop of 163 tonnes from the previous year, despite an increase in population. As a
response to the $17,115 savings in landfill costs,
Strathmores disposal landfill fees also dropped
in 2015. The town is following suit where other
communities have already banned such materials from ending up in solid waste, with Calgary
also imposing a ban this November.
Owner of H&H Huxted Enterprises, Colin
Huxted, expects savings to reach more than
$280,000 once the three-year pilot project nears
its completion.
The grass and leaves and the garden waste
should not be going into the landfill, its a very
valuable commodity as far as composting, said
Huxted.
If its simple and easy people will do it. If
it doesnt cost them anything theres no reason why they cant do it. This year Huxted has
many goals and were very excited to pursue
those goals in hopes of Strathmore becoming
the greenest town in Alberta. We feel education
is the best way to achieve our goals and getting
commitment from council will allow us to become even greener.

Fighting the fire!

The Strathmore Fire Department attended the scene of a brush fire behind Strathmores
Hi-Ho Gas that engulfed an area of a couple hundred feet on April 12. The fire department and
Strathmores bylaw officers were dispatched at 4:07 p.m. and managed to get the fire under
control by 5 p.m.

Library brings service to community

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Throughout the years, books have always played a significant role in Arlene Brandts life. As an elementary student
she helped her aunt repair books, volunteered at the Strathmore Municipal Library for a decade, and joked that she
followed her grandmothers footsteps a woman who often
placed reading a book at a higher priority than housework.
Yet over the years Brandts eyesight started to waver, her
mobility was considered low, and her drivers license was
revoked. Unable to get to the library without the assistance
of her children, who were often unavailable and dont live
locally, the avid reader was reduced to listen to an audiotape a friend picked up at the recycle yard. Then in November, Brandt heard about the recently established Visiting
Library Program.
Id be lost, she said. I wouldnt have any books unless
my kids could get them and that would be far and few between. When they came up with this I thought aha, so it
freed me up, I get my books, I dont have to worry about
them being overdue and my kids dont have to run around.
The Strathmore Municipal Library launched the Visiting
Library program, a popular program in other communities,
at the end of last year to service those physically unable to
visit the facility. By providing help in selecting items, delivering books, DVDs, or audio material to their house, and
dropping them back off at the library, the service already
affected 12 individuals in various conditions including a
101-year-old-woman in seniors housing, someone ill in the
hospital, and a family who is unable to drop by the library
regularly due to transportation issues. The once-a-month
delivery service is especially effective for those suffering
from a long-term illness, disability, an accident, or have
transportation issues.
Shes down one vehicle, her husband works in Calgary,
and she has three small children so that whole thing of
getting to the library is a hassle, said Lea Jensen, Visiting
Library coordinator, about the most recent patron that just
signed up for the program.
Thats the big thing. Its for anyone. Now its picking up
steam so we have to keep on going. Ive noticed that some
of the volunteers and patrons have made a bond. At Sagewood theres a fellow and two ladies and one volunteer

Arlene Brandt is one of the Strathmore Municipal Librarys patrons that

makes good use of the new Visiting Library Program. With her failing eyesight and low mobility, having someone come to her house to drop off and
pick up items, such as audio books, allows her to continue to reap the benefits of her library membership.

who goes there because theyre her friends.

Owing to a grant from the United Way, the program was
finally able to get underway in Strathmore. With just over
$4,000 the funds provide the salary for the program coordinator, mileage for the five volunteers, advertising, and supplies. As the program has already received positive feedback, library staff members are considering expanding the
free service into Strathmores peripheral areas and acquiring further funding next year.
The United Way of Calgary and area has been very generous with the Strathmore Municipal Library to allow us to
provide these types of programs and services to the community and its been quite successful so far, said Carmen
Erison, assistant director of library services.
Because its so new we want to see how it goes here in
the Town of Strathmore first and if we see that its a need
and successful, well certainly look for grants and expand it
into Wheatland County. This one you do see quite a bit in
other communities and thats why weve been pushing to
have this service in our community. We know it would be a
benefit to our residents.
According to Jensen the current volunteers manage well,
yet the program will need to attract more volunteers as interest grows. All volunteers are required to provide a criminal record check. To learn more about the Visiting Library
program and how to sign up visit www.strathmorelibrary.

We are always being encouraged to keep our

fibre intake up. One source of fibre we dont often
think about is the avocado. If you eat a whole
avocado, you will be adding about 14 grams of
fibre. It also contains some fat but its the good
monounsaturated type, not saturated.
It seems like more children are peanut-allergic
than ever before. In Canada, it is as high as 3%.
In some countries, peanuts are introduced early

which is a peanut butter-flavoured cheese puff
that children like. There is significantly less
peanut allergies found in Israeli children.
There are more than 470 products (prescription

careful.
Heres an idea of how to stop a nosebleed.
Moisten a cotton ball (enough to put inside the

Otrivin is an example. Combined with a bit of
pressure on the nostrils, this should stop the
bleeding in a few minutes. Leave the cotton in for
about half-hour.

THREE QUESTIONS TO ASK

ON THE TRAIL OF LIFE

A few weekends ago, our

family resumed our regular
rhythm of heading to (or
towards) the mountains to go
for a hike. Thankful for another
unseasonably warm afternoon,
we found our way to Big Hill
Springs Provincial Park north
of Cochrane.
Along with other eager hikers
longing for the promise of
spring and an even warmer
summer to come, we began
walking the hilly trails tucked
in a valley north of Cochrane.
We saw signs of springs: buds
on trees, birds in the air
the sound of running water
released from frozen slumber.
We also experienced the
lingering grip of winter: ice on
the trails, piles of unthawed
snow the chill of the wind
when the sun snuck behind
a cloud. And the in between:
mud, mud and more sticky
mud for our preschoolers
boots. As we walked the trails
of the park, we paid attention
to the changing of seasons,

the beautiful landscape, and

the gift of being together on a
spring afternoon.
As we rambled and walked, I
was reminded of three questions asked by one Christian
community as a part of their
journey of life:
Whats bringing me life?
Whats draining me of life?
What is God inviting me to
notice?
These three questions have
consistently drawn me deeper
on the journey and challenged
me to pay greater attention to
the contour and experience
of life.
What helps you pay attention?
What encourages you to slow
down and pay attention? What
challenges you to fully engage
and embrace the challenge
and the gift of a life well lived?
Like the rhythm of a family

consistently asking reflective
questions helps me find and
discover life.

Strathmore becomes proactive

in turning the town green
Continued from Page 1
Since taking ownership of the recycle yard in
2014, Huxted tackled cleanliness and safety issues,
while passing numerous forward-thinking initiatives including the acquisition of a wood chipper, a
metal baler, and a Class 1 compositing site a goal
achieved last July, after getting the green light from
Alberta Environment and the Town of Strathmore,
months ahead of the proposed timeline. Eight composting piles are currently cooking on the property
at temperatures reaching up to 71 degrees Celsius.
The finished organic material contains traces of
iron, copper, manganese, zinc, and boron, ranks
of high quality, and was used in fertilizing 200 lbs
of vegetables that Huxted donated to Wheatland
County Food Bank in October. The classification
meant that food scraps and bio-solids could now be
accepted at the facility. Since accepting bio solids
in December, the town has already saved $18,000
by the end of February in trucking and composting
fees. However, while the local council and Huxted
understand the benefits and have already began
reaping the rewards, education for residents remains a hurdle to be overcome.
In my conversation with several people in the
community, theyre excited about this too, said
Councillor Steve Grajczyk, who is also a representative on the sustainability committee.
I havent heard any negatives to get this going.
But at lot of them dont understand, so theres some
education we have to do yet.
H&H Huxted already receives numerous questions on their Facebook page, and estimated twothirds of rarea esidents visit the recycling yard
regularly. To further the push for composting, the
organization envisions informational seminars
on the property, more tours, and posted a short
slideshow of before and after photos of the yard.
Furthermore, Huxted plans to get involved with
schools, and host their first Sustainability Corn
Roast with the vegetables grown out of the organic
materials. The hope is to promote the benefits of
composting and the importance of preventing composting material from reaching the landfill.
When approaching the town at the regular council meeting on April 6, Huxted originally proposed
a three-phase plan, where the first phase called for
the removal of grass and garden waste from solid

waste pickup. The options included composting in

ones own backyard, bringing the materials to the
recycle yard and not charge to be composted on
the property, renting a grass and garden waste cart
from Huxted to be picked up weekly for a fee, or
hiring someone to haul the composting material to
the recycle yard. Councillor Sobol also discussed a
fifth option where every homeowner is supplied
with a container for the grasses that would be
picked up by Huxed and would result in additional
costs to the town.
Phase 2 addresses household organics and the
prohibition of being placed in regular garbage
bags. The organics could be collected in kitchen
catcher buckets, and then be placed in either 13 or
20 gallon carts. When compared to similar operations currently in existence, Phase 2 could save the
town over $60,000 in landfill fees annually.
The third phase would be implemented after the
completion of the three years, and initiate a fully
automated system where resident have either a 64
gallon or 96-gallon cart. In the end, Huxteds goal
is to reduce each resident to one garbage bag by
2020.
Everybody has to realize that yes as a taxpayer
our goal is to reduce the amount of money that
were spending moving all this stuff to a landfill but
in the long run its a lot more than that, said Sobol.
This is the only Earth we have and we have to look
after it a little bit better than what were doing.
In the near future, the recycle yard plans to involve students in a pumpkin growing competition,
acquire a glass grinder, turn the property into a
recycling park with trees, flowers and grass using
the compost, and eventually construct an indoor
recycling centre.
Council directed administration to draft a Sustainability policy. Furthermore, council unanimously approved the addition of an addendum to address the collection of grass and garden waste to
the solid waste contract as a three-year pilot project
beginning June 1, and for the collection of organics as a three-year pilot project beginning on Jan.
1, 2017, and that the addendum be brought back
to council for approval. An option was also added
to add an additional three years to the project once
the initial three years have been completed. Councillor Rocky Blokland and Councillor Pat Fule were
absent during the meeting.

New Blood to tell its story in Rosebud

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

New Blood, a poetry-dance-music
show telling the story of Siksika Chief
Vincent Yellow Old Womans residential
school experience, will be performed
in Rosebud, May 4 to 7.
The cast includes Rosebud School
of the Arts (RSA) students, and high
school students and elders from the
Siksika Nation. Deanne Bertsch is directing.
Paul F. Muir, Rosebud School of the
Arts (RSA) education director, invited
Bertsch to teach New Blood as the RSA
movement class this term. Its been on
my mind and my heart for awhile: how
can Rosebud as a community and as a
school build ties with Siksika? he said.
This seemed to be another opportunity to build more bridges.
One of the best ways to connect
with another culture is through their
stories, Muir said. This is a way of exposing our audience to this story.
He also hopes new relationships will
bring opportunities for growth. For the
(RSA) students, who actually get to interact with some of these First Nations
dancers and drummers ... my hope for
them is that it will break down some

of the us-and-them ideology, he said.

Its easy to just think those people
who live on the reserve. And that never
helps. So the more we can see different
groups of people as just human beings,
look them in the eye, see that theyre
actually the same as us (the better).
Bertsch, whos taken the show to numerous Alberta communities since creating it at Strathmore High School (SHS)
in 2014, keeps telling the story because
it changed her life. I learned so much
about the residential school story and
how that has affected so many generations of First Nations people, she said.
I didnt know so many of the kids died
at these schools. ... And I didnt realize that so many of the addiction issues
came from this. I didnt realize all the
pain that was caused because of what
happened at the schools and how that
was passed on to the children of the
kids that attended.
Ive been so lucky to get to know
(First Nations people) and become
friends with them through this show,
she said. I wish the same for all my
non-First Nations friends that they
can experience the culture, experience
friendships with First Nations people.
New Blood has an impact on First
Nations people too, Bertsch said. First

Nations people feel so cared about, that

non-First Nations people are interested
in telling their story, and telling it in a
way that they feel honored.
Kaitlyn Sloboda, a fourth-year RSA
student, is singing the female lead,
Hawk Girl, alternating with secondyear student Cassie Garbutt. Travis Friesen, RSA graduate, is singing the male
lead. Mennonite Central Committee is
sponsoring the show by paying for the
use of George Littlechilds artwork.
The Rosebud shows are Slobodas
third New Blood performance, and the
show has changed her too. Ive been
informed (about residential schools) in
a personal, collaborative, artistic way,
instead of sitting down in a class and
having it taught to me, she said. Ive
made friends with the two little girls
who are the Blackfoot (Siksika) dancers and that relationship is something
so special. And (elders) Eddy (Wolfchild), whos also in the show, and
Eulalia (Running Rabbit) we had an
opportunity to connect. ... Were telling
a remarkably impactful story together.
While Bertsch has been directing
New Blood rehearsals in Rosebud, she
also took SHS students to Cochrane in
March, to perform New Blood at the
High School One-Act Play Festival. New

Lions Splash Park safety issues addressed

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Town council took a proactive approach last week
in addressing an ongoing safety concern at the Lions
Splash Park, where the original finish of the pad and
its weathering raised unease among residents.
Staff investigated the concrete surface of the splash
pad, which appeared to have some areas with a
smoother finish, where some kids were prone to slide
and fall.
Its been an issue on my plate for two years and I
should mention that Ive seen kids fall there, and of
course at the splash park you are dealing with predominately young children, said Councillor Bob Sobol.
Although theyre not supposed to be running
there, they are running there and theres an area of
that splash park thats basically very slippery and last
time I was there I observed parents putting towels
down. I certainly appreciate what they are doing, and
I certainly appreciate the concern that a number of
parents have voiced about that area. I really do think

that something has to be done.

Council was provided with four options: leave
splash pad status quo; apply six millimeter thick rubberized surface to the concrete pad; sand blast to
open the pores in the concrete and seal to protect the
concrete without leaving a slippery film; and pressure
wash and paint with pool epoxy with grip agent.
According to Dave Rimes, parks supervisor for the
Town of Strathmore, the pool epoxy application was
the least preferable option due to constant maintenance.
With that being an outdoor pad it does get moisture underneath, and Im worried about the painted
epoxy peeling, said Rimes. Thats my biggest concern with the epoxy and then youre doing it every
year. Youre touching it up. Im concerned with the
epoxy application and thats why I didnt recommend
that.
While some council members felt the rubberized
surface, which has a lifespan of 10 years, was appropriate, others felt its sticky texture may result in
similar situations of kids falling. Councillors were also
concerned with the rubber attracting heat, yet being

installed in a splash park seemed to reassure the local

representatives that the water would cool the pads
temperatures.
Im thinking that that is better than what we have
right now, and I keep going back to the amount of
children that we see running in the park on a daily
basis and theres tons of kids going through there,
Sobol said. I guess Im just trying to make sure that
we provide as safe a surface as possible and I think
the safest surface is the rubberized surface.
However, Councillor Denise Peterson disagreed,
proclaiming his statement to be a personal opinion
and putting forth a motion to implement the sand
blasting option. Council was reassured that a rubberized surface could be applied at a later time if the
option proves not to be successful.
Council agreed for the work on the splash park to
be completed this year and approved up to $11,500
to sandblast and seal the surface, with funds being
drawn from the Financial Stabilization Reserve. Councillor Bob Sobol voted in opposition of the motion
and Councillor Pat Fule and Councillor Rocky Blokland were absent during the April 6 meeting.

Women Conference back by demand

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Two years ago, a bi-weekly
event that celebrates women
left Strathmores females energized and balanced after a
drumming circle and workshops. This year, the conference returned with a bit of
influence from the current
economic situation empha-

sizing relaxation, revitalization, and rejuvenation.

Starting off with a little bit
of an abdominal workout
caused by vehement laughing to Sharon Widdups comedy performance, 90 women
spent the day practicing gentle yoga exercises, learning
about genealogy, pelvic floor
health, and Reiki, before finishing off the day with some

NEWS

By Irene Knappe, Secretary / PR / Membership

Our local hero, Comrade George Freeman is a survivor of D-Day, June 6th, 1944, where
he was one of many brave Canadian soldiers who landed on Juno, Normandy. He is to receive a special medal from the Republic of France, on Friday, April 15th, 2016, at the Legion.
The presentation of this medal will be made by a representative of the French Embassy for
the Republic of France, with Albertas former Lt. Governor, Col. (Retd) the Honourable Donald
S. Ethell at his side. Also present will be Wild Roses Derek Fildebrandt, our MP Martin
Shields as well as Mayor Mike Ell. The public is welcome to attend and we are asking
everyone to come to the Legion between 1:30 and 2:00 pm. The ceremony will commence
at 2:00 pm and end at 4:00 pm.
This Friday night there will be entertainment by The Barflyz, beginning at 7 p.m. Jans
kitchen will serve her special dinner for $10 per person, and afterwards you can dance the
night away! There is no charge for the entertainment and the public is welcome to come
join us. We also have meat draws and a 50/50 draw.
On May 14th is our 10th annual Shoot for the Troops. After special consideration by the
Committee, it has been decided to donate the money raised by this terrific fundraiser to CAN
PRAXIS, a branch of Canadas Wounded Warriors. They help soldiers and other veterans and
their families who are fighting PTSD. CAN PRAXIS match up PTSD sufferers with a horse for
therapy, which has become a very successful program. You can read more about Wounded
Warriors on the internet at woundedwarriors.ca, and CAN PRAXIS can be found on Face
Book. We strongly urge you to check up on both for your own information. The participants
of Shoot For the Troops are very enthusiastic dart players from all over Alberta and there
is also a silent auction. Anyone who has items they wish to donate to this auction, please
bring them to the Legion between April 16th and May 13th. Please make sure nothing is
broken or chipped or needs parts and put your name on the item so your donation can be
mentioned on the bidding sheets. All of the proceeds of this day will be donated to the
previously mentioned non-profit organizations for their fight against PTSD.
WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT!!!

meditation.
It was a huge success, said Lynn Walker, program coordinator for Wheatland
Family and Community Support Services.
The last time we were looking at balance in your life, and this time we were
looking at relaxation as part of that whole
mix, because its stressful times right now
with our whole economic downturn. We
thought maybe this would just give a little
added tidbit for ladies as to what they can
do to reduce some of that stress.
The Rural Health Partnership, made up
of Wheatland FCSS, Wheatland Further
Education Society, Alberta Health Services, and the Growing Family Society in
conjunction with the Primary Care Network, form the planning committee for
the event, which was first introduced in
1990.
Since then the event has grown in popularity, increasing by 10 women since the
last conference in 2014. Statistics also
showed that 60 per cent of women participated from Strathmore, while there was
a 38 per cent involvement from Wheatland County and 2 per cent of attendees
came from outlining areas as far-reaching
as Bassano.
I think we made the connections that
we needed to get the point across that
you still need to make time for relaxation
and to revive yourself, said Walker. I
think its proven itself.

Alberta government should reduce

spending now to prevent larger cuts later
DEREK FILDEBRANDT
MLA Strathmore-Brooks

Real action is needed urgently to get Albertas
out-of-control finances back on track. With interest payments soon to be the most expensive
branch of government outside health, education
and social services, its critical that we take reasonable and moderate steps today to ensure the
cost of government remains sustainable. If we
dont, it means over the long term Alberta will
have less for new hospitals, schools, teachers and
nurses and punish families with higher taxes. Alberta has now run eight consecutive deficits under four PC premiers and one NDP premier.
Despite record or near record revenues in those
years, we have gone from having $17 billion in
savings to an $18 billion debt that is headed to
$50 billion by the next election. Both PC and NDP
governments have proven unwilling to reduce
bloated spending. Only Wildrose has consistently
stood for getting spending under control while
protecting the Alberta Advantage that made us
the economic beacon of North America. A government should spend within its means. This restraint should have been put in place long ago,
but as we stare down a staggering $10 billion dollar deficit this year, we cannot pretend the status
quo is responsible.
Our neighbours in British Columbia deliver
government services equal to ours, but spend
$8 billion less when you adjust for population
thats 20 percent. We can cut costs, while protecting front line services. For that reason, the
Wildrose has released a $2 billion, ten-point plan
to reduce operational spending this year and get
our finances moving in the right direction. This
$2 billion reduction is the equivalent of asking
the government to save about 4 cents on every
dollar spent. Any family or business could find
4% savings if it needed to. Given how much we
overspend, this $2 billion in specific savings this
year is just a starting point, but an important one.
If politicians arent taking serious steps towards
a balanced budget, they arent doing their jobs.
Albertans are losing jobs by the thousands and
wages are dropping across the board. Its only
reasonable that those working for the govern-

ment should show restraint. Restraint now means

that the front line services Albertans need will be
sustainable for the long run.
Wildrose is calling for a hiring freeze in the
bureaucracy, which would save $200 million this
year alone. Our bureaucracy is overstaffed, but in
this climate Wildrose believes attrition, not layoffs, is the best approach to reducing costs. To
ensure that the government can afford to deliver
essential services and to hire new teachers to fill
growing classrooms, the government should negotiate an across-the-board wage freeze, including renegotiating existing contracts. The government should also make clear what it is doing with
the 120 money-saving recommendations from the
Results-Based Budgeting process completed last
fall. Right now, Alberta is the only province in
Canada that does not measure red tape and have
a process to reduce it.
A concerted effort to reduce red tape would
not only make life easier for Albertans, but save
taxpayers up to $300 million a year by making
the jobs of public servants more efficient. Other
spending reductions we have put forward include
reducing government travel, conducting valuefor-money audits, and several other smaller items
which would save $84 million. Finally, Albertas
government has not stopped to ask itself Is everything the government is doing efficient, necessary, or best done by government? in nearly 20
years. That is why the Wildrose is calling for a
thorough program review to generate $600 million in savings. Since we are now borrowing for
the day-to-day operations of government, these
reductions in spending would also mean less debt
taken on, reducing annual interest payments by
$60 million. We cannot afford to continue delaying action on getting our finances under control if
we are to avoid placing an enormous debt burden
on future generations and forcing them to decide
between even higher taxes or even deeper spending cuts.
These reasonable and modest steps can be done
now in order to protect the viability of our finances and the services that rely upon their soundness. The Wildrose Official Opposition believes
that these are reasonable suggestions for the NDP
to implement. All it takes is determination.

Strathmore and County agree on recreation facility partnership

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Town of Strathmore representatives and Golden
Hills Superintendent Bevan Daverne made an appearance near the end of Wheatland Countys regular council meeting on April 5 to see if council
made a decision on if they were going to become
a partner in the new recreation facility thats going
to be built in conjunction with the new Edgefield
School.
The projects total cost is $10 million and Strathmore passed a motion on Dec. 23, 2014 to committ up to $5 million, Golden Hills School Division
contributed the $2 million that wouldve went to
the schools normal gymnasium.
The facility would include multi-sport courts, excluding an ice surface.
If you decide not to be a partner, that sends us
back to the drawing board, said Daverne.
We are coming to the end of the line. Our architects are chomping at the bit.
After hearing from Daverne, Wheatland Countys
Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Alan Parkin

said it was up to council as to what direction they

want to move with their portion of the facility.
With a lengthy discussion came a motion from
Councillor Alice Booth to support the $ 3 million
on the recreation facility with the condition of it
being included in the 2017 budget and staff has to
come up with the source as to where the funds will
come from.
Additionally, the joint use agreement will have to
be signed by both sides.
Regarding the partnership, Ill tell you, this is
what its all about, said Strathmore Mayor Michael
Ell.
The county, the school and the town working
together to make sure all the students and all the
people in the whole area can work together and
play together. The option in regards to recreation
just makes a healthier society. The students in the
county and the students in the town are going to
benefit from this partnership.
Wheatland County Reeve Glenn Koester has visited multi-uses facilities around the province and
said there seems to be a trend of counties and
municipalities who are partnering up and building

multi-use facilities for seniors right down to little kids who

enjoy having them available.
I think the partnership is great, said Koester.
We had a needs assessment and citizens voiced their concerns and I think this will fulfill the needs assessment as far
as everyone using the walking track and places to play sports.
Kids come to school here and share the buildings and might
as well share the rec facilities too. Its a good opportunity,
its a good partnership, we could put our money together and
gets something for a little bit better of a deal with a cooperation with everybody.
The ground breaking for the recreation facility is set for
the fall with the hope of being completed with the school in
September 2017.
Daverne added there might be the possibility as the decision process moves along for community groups to raise
funds to enhance the facility.

Meeting throughout the constituency

MARTIN SHIELDS
Bow River Member of Parliament

I have had the pleasure of attending several community events throughout the Bow River Constituency in the last few months. My Constituency and
Ottawa staff joined me for a series of community
roundtables and meetings with officials during the
week of Feb. 28.
As summer is fast approaching, there are many
communities that will be offering family friendly
events for people.
I recently dropped in to a Village Council meeting in Irricana. They have an excellent Summer Fair
every year, this years takes place on July 16. Last
year there were kids races and games, a pie sale, a
car show, and many other neat events. This years
promises to be just as fun!
I was pleased to attend a chili cookoff fundraiser
in Chestermere for Autism services. It was a real
good time, and MLA Aheer, Mayor Matthews, and
Councillor Steeves also joined me at that event
where we engaged in friendly competition. Chestermere has its own share of summer activities, including their Water Festival on July 16. There are
all sorts of fun activities, such as the artisan market,
the, the Rubber Duck Race, Free Boat Rides, and a
wonderful fireworks display at Chestermere Lake.
I recently had the joy of attending the open-

ing night at the Rosebud Theatre, and they have a

number of activities that are good year round, and
some great summer offerings as well.
I was also in Strathmore where I attended their
Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting.
Theres a brand new event this year called Rec the
Streets, beginning in June in Strathmore. They will
be offering free fitness classes to people in the
downtown core. I invite you to stay tuned for more
details.
I was in Taber in March for the Celebration of
Learning and Lunch. Taber has a number of fun
summer events for families. The biggest bash of
the year is the Annual Taber Cornfest. This year it
will take place Aug. 26-27. Cornfest has a variety of
activities for families and people of all ages, and attracts people from all over Southern Alberta.
There are many more communities across Bow
River that have summer events. I am looking forward to attending them, and getting to meet you
and know you better. Please let my office know if
there are any events you would like me to attend.
My staff is always available to assist you if you
have any questions or comments about the Government of Canada. My Ottawa office can be reached

Continued support for not-for-profit

JENNIFER PAGE
Program Coordinator Pregnancy Care Centre

During an unsteady economic climate, and a
time of increased job loss, we are thankful for our
many faithful supporters who have stuck with us
over the years and helped us to reach those who
need our services. Because of the generosity of individual donors, local businesses, and family foundations, we can continue to walk with those facing
unplanned pregnancy. While financial support is
certainly necessary for us to function, weve experienced generosity in many other ways.
We are grateful for business leaders in our community who invest in our organization by providing us with office spaces at reduced rates. We are
also thankful for our many trained volunteers, who
dedicate their personal time to helping us extend
our impact and help more clients. We invite you to
join our team of supporters.

One of our three annual fundraisers will kick

off on Mothers Day. Our Formula 4 Hope baby
bottle campaign is intended to increase awareness
of the impact of unplanned pregnancy, as well as
to fund the services and supports of the Pregnancy
Care Centre.
We invite you to fill a baby bottle with spare
change, bills and/or cheques so that we can continue making a difference in the lives of our clients. Over 100 local Calgary and area churches in
places like Strathmore, High River, Okotoks, and
Langdon participate in this campaign.
Our 2016 goal is to raise $135,000. To learn more
or to participate, please visit www.pregcare.com/

Whether they are needed for padding the bushes,

on that, said Scott Campbell,

president and founder of
Badlands Search and Rescue.
We are unpaid professionals, were trained to a professional level. We can assist in
a variety of situations and
that is very vague and open
and I did that intentionally
because I would rather have
somebody call me up tasking
the agency, whether it be law
enforcement, or municipal,
or government, or whatever.
I think theres so much room
for us to be able to help and
work with different agencies.
The province has approximately 1,200 volunteers at
their disposal that are trained
in rope rescue, avalanche
training, incident command,
advanced first aid and CPR,
swift water rescue, urban
search and rescue, tracking,
and bone identification.
Those involved in the Badlands Search and Rescue Association participate in two

training sessions a month throughout

the year, including a 40-hour minimum
standardized search and rescue skills
course that places focus on gear and
equipment use, basic first aid, survival
skills, and basics of performing a search.
The program emphasizes four types of
searches a hasty search, a nose-to-theground search, a highly efficient search,
and an evidence search.
Campbells brainchild was established
with the inspiration of his young son
who liked to go exploring. Coming to
the realization that he wasnt satisfied
with the current resources available, he
set out to meet the need.
I found out that were looking at
three to four hour response times, and
if my little boy gets lost or somebody
goes missing thats not acceptable, he
said. So I started doing some talking,
asking around and found lots of support through Search and Rescue Alberta
and the local search and rescue teams
said, yes, theres a need here for search
and rescue.
Over the years the group has received
steady financial support from local
agencies, including the Cheadle Lions
Club, the Alberta Fish and Game Association, Drumheller, and Golder Associates in Calgary who donated $10,000
for the purchase of rope rescue gear
to assist in low and high angle rescue
training.
The Badlands Search and Rescue Association helped in the missing person
searches in Morley, Castor, for Ryan
Lane, and the infamous Liknes and Obrien search efforts in Airdrie. The team
has also assisted in natural disasters
such as the devastating floods of 2013,
forest fires, and even the water main disaster in Strathmore several years ago.
I think its very valuable, said
Dwight Stanford, chief administrative
officer to the Town of Strathmore. In
the past weve needed this kind of help
and we had not been able to get it even
though weve tried.
The association is looking for operational and administrative volunteers
and will be hosting a recruiting and
information session at the Strathmore
town fire hall from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.
on April 23. For more information about
the organization and opportunities visit

Fuelled by a healthy financial contribution and the volunteerism of Chinook
Financial employees, local students will
continue to partake in an educational opportunity to become financially
knowledgeable and future-oriented.
Roughly 75 Grade 9-10 students at
Holy Cross Collegiate and the Standard
School will benefit from the Economics for Success program, which has
been initiated by Junior Achievement
for nearly a decade. The continuation
of the program in the fall received a financial boost from Chinook Financial
in mid-March when the institution a
division of Connect First Credit Union
partnered with Junior Achievement
Southern Alberta and injected $15,000
into the project over the next year;
$3,500 in Strathmore.
The program that theyre sponsoring, is a program to give students an
opportunity to see what their future
might look like or what kind of planning they might have to do in order to
have a successful future, said Tristan
Periard, regional coordinator for Junior
Achievement. It had been an ongoing
discussion with Chinook Financial and
theyve always been very involved in our
programs and in other regions. Weve
always had a good base with Chinook
Financial in Strathmore, so through this
partnership its kind of created a new
direction in communities.
Economics for Success (EFS) encourages students to excel at school and
gain valuable knowledge, relevant
skills, and a financial grasp to propel
them onto their chosen career path.
The funding will expand the program
throughout southern Alberta in 13
communities and affect roughly 900

students. These communities include

Brooks, Drumheller, Hussar, Hanna,
Nanton, and Vulcan.
As the programs for the Strathmore
and Wheatland County region have already been completed, the funds and
volunteers will be utilized for the program in the fall.
We feel very privileged to have the
opportunity to volunteer in our local
classrooms and to help youth explore
their potential, said Scot Hadden,
president of Chinook Financial. Our
support of the Economics for Success
program is a great way for our team to
get out in these communities and get
engaged with our students. I know our
staff loves to do it, and they always tell
me they find it very fulfilling and life
enriching.
The Boston Consulting Group conducted a study of Junior Achievement
alumni in Canada in 2010. The results
found that the programs produced
more financially literate graduates who
saved more money, borrowed less, and
went bankrupt less often than the average Canadian. The graduates were also
50 per cent more likely to open their
own business, and were 25 per cent
less likely to be unemployed. The study
also showed that the Junior Achievement graduates earned an average income that was 50 per cent higher than
non-alumni.
Junior Achievement will allocate the
funds to provide volunteer training,
booklets, letters and printing and any
other materials required for the program. With economic uncertainties currently facing Alberta, the program will
also prepare students of the financial
realities of attending post-secondary
while educating them on present-day
and future career trends. The program
will be available in the fall.

GHSD makes final decision for European travel

SABRINA KOOISTRA
Times Junior Contributor

From March 24 to April 3, 114 people ventured abroad on a trip to Spain,
Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, and France,
under the direction of Strathmore High
School (SHS) teacher Kenton Zandee.
SHS offers this opportunity as an
educational experience for students
which went from being community-led to being orchestrated by the
school and Golden Hill School Division (GHSD).
In the past few months, several
school trips, specifically SHSs Europe
trip, have been in serious jeopardy
as incidents in Belgium and France
evoked concern for the safety and
well-being of those travelling there.
This left the school district in an incredibly difficult position.
After the attacks on Paris in mid-November, students from Calgary Board
of Education were barred from travelling anywhere in France and the Calgary Catholic School Board halted all
international trips from proceeding.
Similar consequences were seen
when Calgarys William Aberhart High
School hiking trip to Northern California in 2000 turned into a devastating
loss of two students and a chaperone
when they were pulled into the ocean
by vicious waves.
According to Bevan Daverne, superintendent of GHSD, the school district
did not want to starve its students of
opportunities such as travelling abroad
by reacting a fear that may not materialize, such as terrorism, which other
school boards have done now and in
the past.
When assessing the risks of these
trips, GHSD came to a simplified twopoint conclusion which served as reasoning for allowing these students to
gain from this cultural experience.
Firstly, despite the fear of other terrorist attacks, GHSD staff noticed that
community members continued to
plan international vacations, even to
Europe.

Secondly, terrorism has been seen

in several locations around the world,
even in Canada, and it seemed irrational to bar eager students from this
opportunity where the feared threats
could be seen anywhere. Jan Wathen,
SHSs Career Practitioner, travelled
with the school to Europe and felt confident in GHSDs resolution.
There was a lot of people involved
and decision making was made at a
high level and EF (Education First)
obviously would have been on the
ground in Europe, said Wathen. Im
going to trust decisions made by the
school board and everyone involved.
Throughout the past few months,
GHSD organized meetings with families of students and parents travelling
with the school to discuss the detailed
itinerary as well as any related risks.
According to Daverne, families of
students planning on travelling to Europe with their school continued to be
enthusiastic about the opportunity as
well as confident despite the danger
posed both in Brussels and Paris in the
last year.
I know that there was concerns
prior to going on the trip about the
safety of being in Europe at this time,
but being on the trip I didnt [feel unsafe] because all of the people there
had still decided that going, even in
this time, was worth it, said a student
who travelled with SHS.
Out of approximately 250 students
from around the school district who
planned on going on any school excursion, only a handful of families
pulled their students from the list and
not necessarily because of the threat
of terrorism.
Ultimately, though, the Canadian
government had the final say as to
whether or not students would be given clearance, and even after the attack
on Brussels, no travel advisory was
posted.
As a result of the decision made by
GHSD and the lack of a travel warning to Europe by the Canadian government, all trips in the school division

resumed planning.
Depending on the risk at some destinations, itineraries were slightly adjusted in the best interest of all those
attending. All SHS trips remained as
they had before. The unnamed stu-

dent felt others would agree saying,

Im glad that I made the decision to
go even with the danger Im glad
that I went and I think I wouldve regretted not going and letting terrorism
control my life.

Dinos sign Wheeler

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Strathmore Thunder U21 fast pitch softball shortstop Libby Wheeler will be completing her eighth
year this season before suiting up for the University
of Calgary Dinos team come fall, after signing a letter
of intent at the end of March.
Wheeler is familiar with the Dinos coach Neil Harlos, having played for him at the 2014 Alberta Summer Games and against his U21 team last year.
It was a tough decision, said Wheeler. I definitely
really wanted to play a sport post-secondary. I think
being able to have a team and go to a school that
has a real good program for me, it was a real good
decision.
Softball was always fun and always came easy to
the athlete, and its an exciting opportunity for her to
continue the sport at a high level.
However, she knows that field time will have to be
earned in the first year.
I think I have a pretty good chance, said Wheeler.
I was playing U21 last year as a 16-year-old. Ive
seen a lot of older girls of how they pitch and how
they play. Im expecting it to be a challenge but its
something Im definitely up to. Im excited to go
into university having a good group of girls that Ill
be able to make friends with and keep myself busy
while Im at school.
Harlos said to Wheeler that their goal as a team is
to go to nationals and the organization looks at players wholl help them reach their goals.
Shes someone in the next four years thatll continue to improve and someone that we can work with
and develop into an even better player, said Harlos.
Thats important too because we really have no interest in taking on players that we dont think are
going to work hard to improve themselves. I think
with Libby we have a player thats going to do that.
He added that the shortstop has a vacancy this upcoming season and shell get her opportunities. Her
strong play in the batters box will be an asset for the
player.
Wheeler will be enrolled in the Kinesiology program.

Strathmore Polominos water polo club is nearing the end of their first season, which proved to
be a year of development and progression for
players, while giving others the chance to move on
and compete with provincial level teams.
Were growing as a club, which is great, said
coach Brooke Zimmerman.
The more games weve played, the more theyre
enjoying and the more theyre improving. They
come motivated to practice to learn new skills, new
tactics so they can do well in our city games that
we play on Sunday nights and as well the teams
theyre playing for provincially league wise.
She mentioned that many players have grasped
the water polo basics such as man-to-man cover- Strathmore Polominos water polo team members Ethan Merage, knowing where the ball is at all times, looking rold (l-r), Greyden Smith, Reanna Thiessen, Payton Jensen and

Badgers basketball looking

for Strathmore players
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

When the Chestermere-LangdonStrathmore (CLS) Badgers minor basketball association president Clay Watson took over the program last June, his
vision was to expand out from the previous 20 years of being a Chestermereonly association to the surrounding areas of Langdon and Strathmore to meet
the growing interest in the sport.
This was the first season the association had mixed groups, where they ended up with seven teams that all medaled
in the CMBA.
The program has teams for both boys
and girls: at the tyke U9 level, who play
in the East Pro house league in Calgary,
while the mini U11, U13 bantam, U15
midget and U17 juvenile play in the
Calgary Minor Basketball Association
(CMBA).
Watson said there werent as many
players that came out from Strathmore
as anticipated but knows there are lots
of kids who play basketball in town.
Our zone actually has Langdon and
Strathmore players, said Watson. But
before when it was Chestermere Minor
Basketball, they never really let anybody know that. We want to let all those
people out in that area this is where
you need to come and play ball. We got
a really good response from Langdon
this year and our focus this year will be
on Strathmore.
He pointed out that one great thing
about the CMBA is that its community
basketball where there is a focus on
putting proper talent levels together

from Division 1 all the way to Division

7.
When the season starts the Badgers
do a seeding round, where theyll be
playing games against other teams to
determine in which division theyll
place.
The Badgers are currently hosting a
spring clinic for those players in Grades
4, 5 and 6.
Its basically a skill session, said Watson. What were trying to do is teach
the kids stuff they need to know. You
can use it as two ways, just as a skills
session where you want to get better at
basketball or what were trying to do is
to get kids ready for the fall season.
Thats one of the things were trying
to do with this skills session is for those
kids stepping up to U13 from U11.
Theyll get the chance to do a whole
spring on a main rim.
The clinic costs $60 and began on
April 6, and will run every Wednesday
until June 15 at Chestermeres East Lake
School. There are approximately 10 to
15 slots left.
Additionally, there is a U13 and U15
boys team playing in a spring league,
who recently played their first game
and will go until the first week of June.
There are a couple of slots to fill on
both teams and the cost to play is $175.
Early registration is now available
online for the fall league until the preregistration day in June which is to be
determined.
More information on camps and registration can be found at www.clsmba.
ca or on Facebook at CLS Minor Basketball Association.

Did You Know?

The proverb March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers,
first recorded in 1886,[2] or the shorter, trochaic version April showers bring May
flowers (originally Sweet April showers/Do spring May flowers, part of a poem
recorded in 1610[3]) are common expressions in English speaking countries.

RELENTLESS ON WEEDS. SAFE ON WHEAT.

FLUSH AFTER FLUSH CONTROL.
With EVEREST 2.0, no grower has to sacrifice
yield or crop safety in order to control weeds in
wheat. EVEREST 2.0 Herbicide, the new standard
for grass control in wheat, has advanced safener
technology built in to provide peace of mind
while delivering long-lasting control of green
foxtail, wild oats and key broadleaf weeds.
FLUSH AFTER FLUSH CONTROL
LEADS TO BETTER YIELDS
In University of Saskatchewan field trials,
researchers found that regardless of conditions,
EVEREST 2.0 delivered Flush after flush control
of wild oats and green foxtail with no risk of
injury symptoms. The crop was able to grow
without adverse effects, thanks to the super
selectivity of EVEREST 2.0 on all varieties of
spring and durum wheat.
We like that EVEREST 2.0 gives customers a
wide application window that lets you spray at
your earliest convenience, regardless of weather
conditions, says Mike Hira of CHS. Spraying
early provides the best weed control, and
with EVEREST 2.0, young wheat has the best
chance to become established and reach its top

potential yield. And at the same time, if the rains

come and the crop advances, EVEREST 2.0 is still
safe to apply.
BEST-IN-CLASS CONTROL OF GROUP 1
RESISTANT GRASSY WEEDS
More and more, spring wheat growers in Western
Canada are plagued with Group 1 resistant
grassy weeds. As a Group 2 herbicide, EVEREST
2.0 is the best option for growers struggling
with Group 1 resistance. It is the only group 2
herbicide that provides Flush after flush control
16042TA1
with unsurpassed crop
safety.
SUPERIOR FORMULATION AND CONVENIENCE
EVEREST 2.0 is an advanced, highly concentrated
liquid formulation, says Trent McCrea, Arysta
LifeScience marketing manager, herbicides.
Its a user-friendly, no-hassle product that
wheat growers can rely on, with exceptional
convenience and flexibility. One 2-litre bottle
will treat 80 - 100 acres for wild oats and green
foxtail. In addition, the high-quality liquid
formula with safener technology makes it
compatible with multiple tank-mix partners.

PREVIEW 2016

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

With a mild winter and early spring-like temperatures, local golf courses have
had a jump on the golf season. Here is a preview of five local courses and what
they have in store for the 2016 season.

BOULDER CREEK GOLF COURSE

Langdons Boulder Creek Golf Course is providing golfers with multiple
playing options including the new windmill gold membership, which gives
players unlimited rounds at the course plus eight others, while normal memberships give playing privileges at Boulder Creek and Silver Wing.
Its been very well received, said Boulder Creeks Operations Manager
David Robinson. Its the entry level membership for the Windmill Group.
Being associated with the Hamptons and the Mickelson (National), its an
opportunity for players to get out and play exclusive private clubs that otherwise they wouldnt have access to.
The junior program and mens league will get underway in a couple weeks
time and are a hit every year.
They always sell out, said Robinson, referring to the junior programs.
Langdons really a bustling little town with a lot of junior golfers and
new golfers. Boulder Creeks in a perfect spot to accommodate them and
introduce them to the game.
Aside from the programs, for Robinson its been great to see people out
this early playing on mid-season form greens after the course held up well
over the winter months.
However, they are seeing a decline in corporate golf, but the early start,
is benefitting the course because it helps them offset the decrease in those
events.
He recommends if players want to play weekend rounds to phone in on
Tuesday to book a tee time.
More information on programs and specials can be obtained at www.bouldercreek.ca.
MUIRFIELD LAKES GOLF CLUB
Lyaltas Muirfield Lakes Golf Club has 69 members and this year have
introduced a new Ala Carte Pass, which allows players to build their own
membership for any single day of the week in the season. So far 40 passes
have already been sold.
Muirfields Golf Operations Manager Julian Klatzel said the idea stemmed
from the course wanting to think outside the box as golf memberships became difficult to sell.
As for the course, it survived the winter well enough to open on March
10 and Klatzel expects it to be in mid-season form in about a months time.
The golfers are raving about the course, said Klatzel. Weve been
packed wall-to-wall on weekends basically since weve opened. So lots of
great feedback on the course.
He added that the early rush is due to the $50 spring green fee, which includes a cart and golf.
The clubs events will feature the Spring Thaw tournament on May 14,
which will include live entertainment from 14-year-old Cochrane country
singer Sidney Mae.
There will also be the first annual Ladies Open later in June, which will be
open to any lady golfer.
Were just trying to create these events to get people out here that may
have never played out here, said Klatzel.
He added that it still remains to be seen if clientele will drop off due to
the economy but said its been the busiest hes seen for the beginning of the
season.

OXBOW COUNTRY GOLF COURSE

Oxbow Country Golf Courses head pro Ryan Nordin saw the need to
come up with new ideas after seeing a flurry of golfers coming in to play
the course.
For those golfers convenience, he introduced a seasons pass for a cost of
$800 or $1000 with a cart and a seniors pass for $500 or $700 with a cart.
It was just brought into the course to give players here more options because we had a lot of people come back here frequent, he said.
And that gave them an option to buy a seasons pass rather then paying
every time they come in.
He said that with the warmer early season temperatures theyve been busy,
and the course came out of the winter in great shape.
Its been nice every weekend so its been helping us out, said Nordin.
The course will continue its Tuesday and Thursday night mens league and
a Wednesday ladies league.
Players are signing up, theyre getting full, said Nordin.
The mens league is half full and the ladies night is about three quarters
full. Were getting busier and busier, which considering it used to be the hidden gem that nobody really knew about, whereas we were in the golf show
this year and people are starting to find out more and more about Oxbow.
Were trying to reach out more to Strathmore and letting everyone know
were around.
For more information you can go to www.oxbowgolf.ca.
SPEARGRASS GOLF COURSE
Speargrass is a green-fee only course that doesnt carry memberships.
With the warmer weather coming earlier this year, they were able to take
the tarps off the greens in early March. Over 50 per cent more players teed it
up when the course opened in the middle of the month.

Golf Preview
2016
Continued from Page 21
It started off really good, said
Speargrasss Golf Course Superintendent Warren Boese. Its a big
deal because we dont budget for any
rounds in March and sort of minimal
rounds in April and to get anything in
March is a bonus.
Especially to us, were green-fee
traffic only, so we dont get the up
front costs or the revenue from the
membership money. Aprils been super nice and every day is a golf day.
Boese said with the recent downturn in Albertas economy, fewer
companies are hosting tournaments,
which the course relied on for revenue.
However, depending on the day
of the week you play, he considers
Speargrass tough to beat for value
because all green fees include a cart
and a bucket of range balls.
Golf is a sport that is weather dependent and Speargrass has had
some successful years. The hope for
this season is to see improvements of
more rounds played in a season.
The popular club events including
mens league, ladies day and couples night will start back up in May.
These days will still provide cheaper
golf and more exposure for the club.
More information on Speargrass
can be found at www.speargrass.ca.
STRATHMORE GOLF CLUB
Strathmore Golf Clubs customers have wasted no time getting
back into the swing of things, putting many rounds into the course one
month into the season.
As long as the weathers been
good, its been busy, said assistant
pro Josh Witty. We might be a little
bit ahead of last year because the
season started a little sooner. But for
members, were probably the same
or even up a little bit.
Witty said they initially thought
there was the possibility of a decrease in the amount of golfers, but
with the flurry of golfers early on
there is no sign of a drop off.
He added that a member at the club
has created a fund for junior golfers,
who couldnt afford the sport.
The club released early season
rates in April but have more decisions to make on specials for the rest
of the season that have yet to be released to the public.
New scheduled events will include
the South Pro-Junior that the club
does for CPGA Alberta on July 11
and joined match play events with
the Calgary Golf Association.

KIRBY, Jeanie Dora

LARSEN,

October 1, 1927
- April 10, 2016

May 4, 1933 April 8, 2016

Jeanie Dora Kirby (ne Medwid), aged

88, left us April 10, 2016. She was
born in Norquay, Saskatchewan to Mike and Annie
Medwid and moved to Winnipeg in her late teens
to follow her dreams. She met Charles at a homecoming dance for World War II soldiers in 1946 and
married him November 19 of that year. In Redland,
she and Charles found the perfect location to raise
three children and build her dream home. She took
pride in her work on the farm, at home, and in the
community, including the Redland Good Neighbours
Club, the Severn Creek Home and School, the Rockyford Ladies Auxiliary, Rockyford Friendship Centre,
and the Rockyford United Church. After 67 years, due
to declining health, Jeanie moved into the Wheatland Lodge in Strathmore, later the Prince of Peace
Manor near Calgary, and finally the Foothills Country
Hospice where friends and caregivers spoke of their
love for her and how precious she was to them. Her
brother Bill, and sisters Marie and Elaine and their
families survive her. Also, her children Shirley, Gerald
(Beth), and Debbie (Dennis); grandchildren Jeffrey
and Sarah Thomsen, Shane and Scott Kirby, Kristie Michelle Signer; great-grand-children Veronica
Thomsen-Davis, Avin, Quin, and Ember Thomsen,
Javier, Cristobal, and Andres Kirby, Caleb and Keira
Kirby, Tim and Laura Getz, nephews, nieces, second
cousins and their families miss and remember her
always. She is predeceased by her husband, Charles,
brothers, John, Mike, Russell, Mac and Don; granddaughter, Tanya Signer; and great-grand-daughter,
Scarlett Grey Thomsen-Davis. A memorial service
will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Rockyford
Community Centre at 2:00 p.m. Memorial donations
may be made directly to Foothills Country Hospice (P.
O. Box 274, Okotoks, AB, T1S 1A5 or online at countryhospice.org). To send condolences, please visit
Jeanies obituary at www.wheatlandfuneralhome.ca.

THANK YOUS

Thank You

I would like to thank the Branch No. 10 and Ladies

Auxilary Branch No. 10 for helping me for the past
ten years organizing the Vimy Celebration
April 9th, for our Veterans.
The Sgt. at Arms and Colour Party which was
always enjoyed by everyone. The Bar Staff - Nevada
Chairmen, the wonderful suppers served by our
kitchen staff, and the music during dinner
and the 903 Strathmore Air Cadets that
served the dinner.
My MCs, that was such a big help for me
during the Celebration.
The Ladies Auxilary that decorated the
tables and hall, I couldnt have done it
without them, most effective was the
meaning of the Empty Table.
Thank you to the Caretakers for setting
up the tables and chairs for the evening.
It was an honour for me to do all this for
our Veterans, and I really enjoyed doing this
with the help everyone gave me.
When the Veterans and guests come in the hall,
their smiles, hand shakes and thanks, said it all.
God Bless all the Veterans and thanks for
your help to keep Canada free.
Lest We Forget Lest We Forget.
God willing I will be back in 2017.
