DESIGN OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE STRUCTURES

(ELECTIVE)
Time: 03 Hours
Maximum Marks: 100
Instructions to candidates:
1. Answer TWO questions from Part A, TWO questions from part B and one
from Part C
2. Use of IS: 1343 permitted.

PART- A
1 a Explain the necessity of high strength steel and high strength concrete
in prestressed concrete structures.
b List the differences between post tensioning and pretensioning.
Explain any one type of post tensioning system with a neat sketch.

10

2 a Explain the concept of load balancing in prestressed concrete

members.
b A concrete beam of symmetrical I section has a span of 8 m. The width
and thickness of flanges at the top and bottom is 200 mm and 60 mm
respectively. The overall depth of the beam is 400 mm. Thickness of
the web is 80 mm. Beam is prestressed by a parabolic cable with an
eccentricity of 150 mm at the centre and zero at the supports with an
effective force of 100 KN. The live load on the beam is 2 KN/m. Draw
the stress distribution diagrams at the central; section for (i)prestress
+ self weight (ii)prestress + self weight + live load .Take density of
concrete as 24 KN/m3.

3 a List the various types of losses on PSC beams and explain any two in
detail.
b A pretensioned beam 250 mm wide and 300 mm deep is prestressed
by 12 wires each of 7 mm diameter initially stressed to 1200 N/mm 2
with their centroids located at 100 mm from the soffit. Estimate the
final percentage of loss of prestress due to elastic deformation creep,
shrinkage and relaxation using IS 1343.Given Es=210 KN/mm 2

PART- B

A prestressed concrete simply supported beam is of rectangular

section 250mm wide and 500 mm deep has an effective span of 8 m. It
is subjected to a live load of 3 KN/m. It is prestressed with a straight
cable carrying an effective prestressing force of 250 KN at an
eccentricity of 80 mm. Find the short term and long term deflection at
the centre of span. Given Ec=40 KN/mm2 , creep coefficient=2.0, loss
of prestress=20%.

20

5 a Explain the terms moment of resistance and effective reinforcement

ratio.
b A prestressed concrete T-section of overall depth 1200 mm having a
flange width of 1000 mm and thickness of flange 150 mm, width of rile
200 mm is stressed with four numbers of 12-7 mm diameter wires.
The centre of gravity of tendons is located at a distance of 150 mm
from the soffit of the beam. If f ck is 40 KN/mm2 and fp is 1600
KN/mm2, calculate the flexural strength of the section.

6 a Explain web shear cracks and flexure shear cracks.

b A prestressed concrete beam 250mm wide and 1500 mm deep is
subjected to a shearing force of 900KN.The fibre stress under working
loads is 4 N/mm2.If the effective prestress is 1000 N/mm 2 and area
of cables 1500 mm2, design the shear reinforcement. The cable is
inclined at an angle of sin =1/6.Grade of concrete is M 40.Sketch the
details of shear reinforcement.

PART- C
7

A prestressed concrete beam of rectangular section 90 mm wide and

180 mm deep is to be designed to support two imposed point loads of
3.5 KN each located at one third points over a span of 3m.If there is to
be no tensile stresses in the concrete at transfer and service loads,
calculate the minimum prestressing force and corresponding
eccentricity. Given density of concrete 24 KN/m3 and Loss ratio=0.80.

20

A prestressed concrete symmetrical I section has a flange of

450 x 100 mm overall depth is 600 mm and web width is 80 mm. The
beam is simply supported over a span of 10 m and carries a
superimposed UDL of 15 KN/m. If the stress in concrete is not to

20

exceed 17 N/mm2 in compression and no tensile stress in concrete

both at transfer and service loads, calculate the minimum prestressing
force required and corresponding eccentricity. Assume loss of
prestress to be 20 .Density of concrete 24 KN/m3.
