BATU PAHAT, Sun.- A couple and their ten years old son were killed on the
spot while their nine years old daughter sustained minor injuries when their car collided with
a bus at the 24 km Tongkang Pecah Segamat road last night. The deceased were identified
as Majid bin Husin , 43 , his wife, Selamah binti Mamat, 38. and their son, Hanafi. The
family was from Segamat. Their unidentified daughter escaped with slight injuries and had
had to undergo a minor operation to remove broken pieces of glass from her head. Firemen
spent about an hour to extricate the bodies from the wreck. The bodies were sent to the Batu
Pahat district hospital mortuary for a post mortem. However, none of the bus passengers were
injured. The family was travelling in their car to Segamat
relatives here when the accident occurred near Bukit Berapit.

EXERCISE 2
Read the passage below carefully and answer the questions that follow.
The tapir is a relative of horses and rhinoceros in some ways but it is quite different
from the horses. The tapir is the same as horse in the sense that both have odd hoofed legs.
A tapir is usually heavy and clumsy. It is smaller than a rhinoceros and has no
horns. Its head looks like a pigs head. Like the rhinoceros, it has small eyes and short ears.
The tapirs tail is short, too.
Tapirs live in swamps and streams. You can usually find them in jungles and forests
of Malaysia, Thailand, Sumatera and other tropical countries. They like to hide themselves
among the leaves and tall grasses. They sleep during the day and search for food only at
night.
Tapirs are herbivores. They eat leaves, fruits and other vegetation. Their senses of
hearing and smelling are very good. They are also good swimmers and often find protection
in the water.

Read the passage below carefully and answer the questions that follow.
One day , Aizat went to his rich uncle and told him, I heard that you know the secret
of making gold. Please tell me. I am very poor. My wife is sick and my children are
starving.
Now, everybody knew how lazy Aizat was. He never planted any paddy on his land.
Instead, his fields were full of weeds.
Aizats uncle replied, I need one more item before I can make the gold. Will you
help me to get it?
Aizat agreed , of course. His uncle handed him a large pot and said, You must plant
your fields with paddy. When the paddy is full ripe, put one grain from each stalk into this
pot. Bring me the pot when it is full.
Aizat did as he was told. He spent all his time looking after his paddy plants and
collecting one grain from each stalk. In the meantime, his wife and children quietly
harvested the rest of the paddy and sold it.
It took five years for the pot to be filled up. When Aizat took the pot to his uncle, the
old man unlocked a large iron chest. It was full of gold coins.
These gold coins belong to your family. Your wife and children sold the paddy that
you planted in your fields and saved the money they received.

Dear Maria,
How are you? Are you busy preparing for your monthly tests? I know you do not like
tests, but they help you to be more prepared for your UPSR. I know you always score good
marks.
Next week, my uncle and aunt are coming to visit us. They will keep me busy. My
aunt enjoys cooking, but she always asks me to help her in the kitchen. I do not like washing
the dishes because I often break them.
I will have no chance to watch my favourite programmes on television, too. My uncle
likes to watch sports programmes, but I prefer cartoons. To keep me away from the
television, he buys me magazines. Most of them are about education. I prefer magazines
about famous people.
I would like to write to Zurina and Ranjini. Can you get the addresses for me, please?
I have written to Mei Ling, Tina and Sarah too, but they have not send me even a postcard
since I moved to my new school.
Thats all for now. Hope to hear from you soon.

NATIONAL DAY
During the school holidays, Imran went to watch the National Day parade at
Putrajaya. He took some pictures of the parade to send to his pen-pals in Australia and Japan.
Many people took part in the grand parade. Imran was very excited to see it.
Among the photographs he took were of the police and soldiers. There were also
representatives from various government departments such as the Defence Ministry, schools
and organizations. They looked smart in their uniforms.
He saw the king, the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and other
ministers standing proudly on a grandstand and watching the parade. He also saw many
tourists among the crowd. Many people were waving the Jalur Gemilang. Everyone enjoyed
watching the parade. It was a very meaningful day for all Malaysians.

EXERCISE 6
Read the passage below carefully and answer the questions that follow.
Cleanliness is very important when we handle food. There are many ways to ensure
that the food we prepare is clean and healthy to eat.
First, we must wash all fruits and vegetables carefully before eating or cooking. We
must never eat unwashed apples and oranges or unwashed beans and carrots. The reason is
they may still contain pesticides which may harm us.
Not only must we wash all pots and pans but also dishes, forks and spoons. We must
use clean water and soap to do this. Clearly, this will help remove all germs and bacteria.
Personal cleanliness is also very important. Make sure that your hair is covered before
you begin to cook. Always wash your hands with soap and water before you prepare or serve
food.
Finally, remember to keep all food covered. Also keep gardens and drains clean.
Remember! Rubbish attracts flies and rats. Unclean surroundings too, may lead to diseases.

Dear Mei Li,
How are you? Im fine. Thank you for your letter. How was your little brother
Timmy? I received your letter last week. The school holiday is coming soon. I have read an

Adventure Tour.
I have decided to go to Pulau Langkawi. Theres a lot of activities we can do there.
There are around the island boat rides, a seafood barbecue and an underwater coral sight
seeing activities. I know you like to eat seafood very much.

Read the passage carefully. Then answer the following question.
Do you know how important water is? All living things will die without water. We
use water in our daily lives. Besides using water for drinking, we also use water for bathing,
washing and watering the plants. Plants need water to grow and produce food. The green
substance called chlorophyll also helps the plants to produce their own food.
Water also plays another important role in human lives. For ages, people have used it
as a means of transportation. People used rafts, boats, canoes and ferries to travel on water to
fulfil their needs. With modern technologies, big ships can now travel on water faster and
deliver goods all around the world.
Looking at the impact that water has on human life, we need to appreciate water
more. Steps should be taken to conserve our natural water resources so that we will not face
any problems related to water in the future.

selected as the best pupil in her school for her achievements in her studies and co-curricular
activities. Her headmaster was very proud of her. Her father, a labourer, works hard to
support the family of six. In the morning, he taps rubber trees. In the afternoon, he does
carpentry to earn extra income. Her mother is a housewife. She helps to make ends meet by
selling nasi lemak. She also weaves mats to sell. Yesterday evening, when interviewed by
three reporters, Laila said that she owed her success to her teachers and parents. By having
group discussions with her friends and planning her time well, she managed to score good

thousand years old! He was also very wise and he knew many things. Many people came to
visit him in his cave near the sea. They always asked him to help them.
One day, a young man came to see this wise old man.
O wise father, said the young man, I want to be useful to people. I want to serve
them all my life. How can I do this?
Thats very good, said the old man. Here is a magic box. Do not open until you
reach home. If you open it now, something will happen to you.
Thank you, wise father, said the young man. He took the box and left. When he was
out of the cave, he stopped. I wonder what is in the box? he said to himself. Im going to
look. He opened the box and at once he turned into a tall tree a coconut tree!
That was his punishment for disobeying the old man, but he still had his wish because

Long ago, there were two friends who were farmers. Their names were Ujang and
Ramli. They were best of friends and neighbours too.
One day, when Ujang was digging a well, he found a wooden box buried deep in the
ground. He opened and found gold coins in it. Ujang told Ramli what he had found. He said,
You are my best friend. I plan to share half the gold with you. Ramli replied, Ill take the
box home and take out my share. Then you can have the rest.
Back home, when Ramli and his wife saw the gold coins, they became greedy. They
wanted all the gold for themselves. Ramli and his wife imagined what they could do with the
gold. After dinner, they opened the box once more to see the gold coins. To their surprise, the
gold coins suddenly changed into worms. Ramli thought Ujang played a trick on him.
Feeling angry and disappointed, Ramli and his wife took the box to Ujangs house. As
they came nearer, they could hear Ujang and his wife talking about their good fortune. Ramli
and his wife became angrier. They wanted to teach Ujang and his wife a lesson. They decided
to climb up the roof. Through a hole on the roof, they emptied the box of worms onto the
couples heads. As the worms came down, they changed into gold coins.
