indices.

Logarithms
The logarithm is, technically, the inverse of the index
For example: 102 = 100 is a statement in indices
log10 100 = 2 is the corresponding statement in logarithms
Some logarithms are easy to do in your head without the use of a calculator.
Examples: Evaluate the following logarithms.
(a)
(b)
(c)

log10 1000
log2 16
1
log3 9

Solutions:
(a) If: log10 1000 = x
(b) If: log2 16 = x

then 10x = 1000.

then 2x = 16.

103 = 1000 therefore x = 3

24 = 16 therefore x = 4

(c) If: log3 1

9

then 3x =

3-2 = therefore x = -2

Calculator Note
loga b. In this case a is known as the base of the logarithm.
The most commonly used bases are 10 and the irrational number e (which we
shall see later)
The button labeled log on your calculator will give logarithms in base 10.
The button labeled ln on your calculator will give logarithms in base e.

Laws of logarithms

x
logay = loga x loga y

logaa = 1 and loga1 = 0

1
logb a = log b
a

logaxy = loga x + loga y

loga bn = n loga b

(logc a)
logb a = (logc b)

The laws of logarithms are used to solve equations which involve both
logarithms and indices.
Change of Base
As seen in section 1.1 we sometimes need to solve equations such as 3 x = 15
To do this question we need to the change of base rule
3 x = 15
log10 3 x = log10 15
Because log on your calculator is
the same as log10

log 3 x = log 15

Note: Instead of using log10 we use x log 3 = log 15

Note:
Questions such as
(-6)x =

x must be an even number, because any negative number given to the
power of an even number always produces a positive value.
Questions such as

(-6)x =

-7776
9

x must be an odd number, because any negative number given to the

power of an odd number always produces a negative value.
A special base e
What is e?
e is an irrational number known as Eulers number.
e = 2.71828
When using logarithms

logex we write lnx

Try not to worry where Eulers number comes from, although this information
can be found in most mathematics books.
Example: Evaluate (to 4 decimal places) the following
(a) e3
(b) e + 1
(c) e2x = 16

(d) loge (x 1) = 2

Solutions
(a) Using a calculator we can easily work out e3 = 20.0856
(b)

(c)

(d)

e + 1 is the same as e + 1 and using a calculator we

get e + 1 = 2.6487

Harder examples
1. Find the exact values of x which satisfy the equation e2x 3ex + 2 = 0
Solution: Using one of the laws of indices we know e2x = (ex)2, we can
recognise that the equation is a hidden quadratic.
Let u = ex
e2x 3ex + 2
u2 3u + 2

or

therefore: ex = 2

2. The price in $, P, of a car t years after it was first purchased can be found
with the formula:
P = 15000e-0.2t
(a)
(b)
(c)

How much was the car worth at the start?

What was the value of the car after 5 years?
How many years must past before the car is worth less than $2000?

Solution:
(a) At the start t = 0. Substituting into the equation we get

(b)

P = 15000e0
P = $15000
After five years t = 5. Substituting into the equation we get
P = 15000e-1
11

P = $5518.19

(c)

Making the price = $2000 and then solving the equation to find t.
