MUSIC 261 - 001 Theory and Practice of Tonal Music I

The course:

This course is a detailed exploration of many technical phenomena in


tonal music from the 18th and 19th centuries that inform our appreciation
of musical structures even today. The student will often assume the role of
composer, as the material requires both creative and disciplined
approaches to making the music adhere to the tonal principles established
in readings and lectures. The student will also assume the role of theorist
when analyzing music according to the same guidelines. The lab sessions
will provide deeper meaning to the theories proposed in class through
tangible, real-time experience with the material. The overall mastery of the
material in this course can result in a gratifying level of appreciation and
practice of music in general.

Horvits Music for Ear Training

Required materials: Two sharpened No. 2 Pencils


A notebook with blank staff paper
A binder for handouts, assignments, & notes
Grading:

35% Homework assignments


10% Midterm exam
20% Final exam
35% Lab

Attendance:

Attendance is required for every class meeting

Homework
Assignments:

There are 16 HW assignments throughout the semester. HW grades will


be graded on an A, B, C or Fail scale. A C will be given for incomplete
assignments or for assignments with a lot of errors. A B will be given to
complete assignments with only a handful of errors. An A will be given
to assignments with little to no errors. At the end of the semester I will
drop the lowest HW grade and asses the grades and give an overall HW
grade. Late assignments are not accepted. They will earn a Fail grade
unless excused by the instructor for an emergency or a religious holiday.
Illnesses are only excused with a short-term illness form.
