Web Development
Presented at all campuses.

Web development is a broad term for the work involved in developing

a website. Among web professionals, web development usually refers
to the main non-design aspects of building websites: writing mark-up &
coding. Web development can range from developing the simplest
static single page of plain text, to the most complex web-based internet
applications, e-commerce or social network services.
Pursuing a career in Web Development at CTU Training Solutions will
ensure the student acquires the requisite skills to become a Web
designer after completing the 1st year programme. At the end of the 2nd
year, the student will have the knowledge to create dynamic web-based,
database-driven applications, thereby ensuring he is a fully qualified web
developer.
A web designer is responsible for the design, layout and formatting of a
website. They are involved with the graphical aspects of a website how
the website looks and feels. A web developer on the other hand, handles
the technical aspects of a website, with emphasis on how it works. Both
disciplines may be responsible for the maintenance and updating of a
website. Employment opportunities cut across all industry sectors, from
finance and retail to public organisations. They may be employed directly
by IT consultancies, software houses, web design agencies or work in an
organisations IT department.

Computer Aided Draughting &

Design
Presented at all campuses.

As the world moves forward into a global competitive market, designs

and developments within the architectural, mechanical, and structural
industries are always changing.
Architects, engineers and manufacturers are constantly looking for the
latest technology to simplify costs and speed up their processes but more
importantly, companies are searching for individuals who can operate these
technologies fluently and effectively.
Draughtsmen and detailers are involved in the design and planning stage
of any specific industry, whether it be in the mechanical, architectural or
structural industries. The draughtsman will design, detail and sometimes
oversee construction or manufacturing process.
Draughtsmen design and prepare technical drawing sets for the use of the
construction or manufacturing process, using advanced software to bring
the project to life. The draughtsman is also involved in the 3D presentation
stage of the conceptual design.
Their drawings provide visual presentations for the technical and design
aspect of the product by illustrating dimensions, materials and the
processes and procedures involved in the project.

The Microsoft certifications align to real-world solutions rather than specific

products and validate a broader and deeper set of knowledge and skills. Because many
organizations will continue to have a mix of both cloud and on-premise technologies,
the new solutions-based approach helps ensure technologists can work with a range
of products and services and manage a mixed environment in a way that is seamless
for users within and outside their organization.
The certification framework has been streamlined to three skill levels to make it easier
to navigate:
The Associate Level comprises the Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA)
certification, which provides a clear starting point for job seekers early in their
technology career. Candidates must prove they have the required skills to hit the
ground running. This level represents a foundation and is the prerequisite certification
necessary to earn an MCSE.
The Expert Level comprises the Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) or its
developer equivalent, Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer (MCSD), and is
Microsofts flagship certification for individuals who want to lead their organizations
transition to the cloud. These certifications recognize IT professionals and developers
with broad and deep skill sets across Microsoft solutions.
The Master Level is the Microsoft Certified Solutions Master (MCSM)
certification that differentiates the select few from their peers and represents the
highest bar of knowledge and skills validation.

Laws of Computing

If you have reached the point where you

really understand your computer, its
probably obsolete.

When you are computing, if someone is

watching, whatever happens,
behave as though you meant it to
happen.

When the going gets tough, upgrade

your computer.

The first place to look for information is

in the section of the manual where youd
least expect to find it.

For every action, there is an equal and

opposite malfunction.

To err is human ... to blame your

computer for your mistakes is even more
human, its downright natural.

Awesome Companies Built by Teens (American Express, Open Forum)

Occasionally there are a few really driven youngsters who actually create
successful companies before they are old enough to vote, buy alcohol, or even drive.
Here are inspirational stories of some incredibly successful young entrepreneurs, who all
started their empires in their teens.
1. Mark Zuckerberg
Mark Zuckerberg created the software that would eventually become the
popular social networking site Facebook while he was at Harvard. He launched the
site from his dorm room, and since that day has become the youngest self-made
businessman who is worth more than a billion dollars. Zuckerberg dropped out of
college and became the CEO of the fastest-growing site on the Internet. Facebook
has since recorded over 400 million users and is now one of the most successful Web
sites ever built.
2. Matt Mullenweg
Matt Mullenweg is another software developer who found success at a very early
age. When Matt was 19, he announced that he would be starting an open source
initiative for better blogging software and started Wordpress. Since then the
software programmer started Automattic, which has two flagship products Akismet,
a trap for site comment spam, and Wordpress.com, the hosted version of the open
source Wordpress software. Since founding Automattic, the company has raised over
$30 million dollars and owns some of the most popular software on the Web.

3. Anand Lal Shimpi
Anand Lal Shimpi started AnandTech in 1997, when he was only 14 years old. The
original AnandTech Web site was hosted on a GeoCities platform. What started as
a simple hobby grew into one of the worlds largest Web sites covering computer
hardware. The AnandTech forums is one of the best places to get computer advice
and find tech bargains.
4. Kristopher Tate
Kristopher Tate is a kind of programming wunderkind. Tate started working with
HTML at age 4, before most kids have started reading. He started the photo-sharing
site Zooomr at age 17 as a competitor to Flickr. Since then the company has grown
into one of the top photo-sharing services on the Web. He has since moved the
sites headquarters to Japan, and is involved in creating Japans first society-based
community site.
5. Fraser Doherty
While most successful young entrepreneurs make their money building popular Web sites, Fraser Doherty built his empire using a more traditional way. Fraser
started making jams at the age of 14 in Scotland, and by 16 left school to work on
his jam business SuperJam full-time. SuperJam sells around 500,000 jars a year, which
currently has around 10 percent of UK jam market.

The following short quiz consists of 4 questions and will tell you whether you are qualified
to be a professional. The questions are NOT that difficult.
1. How do you put a giraffe into a refrigerator?
The correct answer is: Open the refrigerator put in the giraffe and close the door. This
question tests whether you tend to do simple things in an overly complicated way.
2. How do you put an elephant into a refrigerator?
Open the refrigerator put in the elephant and close the refrigerator. Wrong Answer!
Correct Answer: Open the refrigerator, take out the giraffe, put in the elephant and close
the door. This tests your ability to think through the repercussions of your previous
actions.

animal does not attend?

Whether youre a freelancer, small-business owner, or full-timer, to climb the

ladder, you must know how to lead the pack. Are you destined to be the big boss or be
bossed around? Take a look at these characteristics shared by great business leaders:
1. Persistence, Persistence, Persistence
In the 1890s, Henry Ford came up with the Ford Quadricycle, a vehicle made up of
a frame mounted on four large bicycle wheels with an ethanol-powered engine.
Needless to say, it wasnt a success. Ford later founded the Ford Motor Company,
invented the Model T, and became one of the wealthiest men in the world. Do you try,
fail, and pick yourself back up again? Bingo!
2. Thick skin. Rhino-thick.
Walt Disney DIS +1.93%s editor at the Kansas City Star told him that he had no good
ideas and lacked imagination. He could have taken the harsh words to heart and
given up the creativity ghost. Instead he went on to become the most successful
animator of all time, winning 22 Academy Awards, creating characters like Mickey
Mouse, and opening his own theme park. Today, Walt Disney is one of the worlds
most ubiquitous household name brands, synonymous with creativity.
3. An Eye for Talent
It takes a village to make amazing things happen. Thats why great leaders surround
themselves with other great minds. Steve Jobs was always on the hunt for talent in
unique ways, like accepting invitations to lecture at universities so he could scout
potential employees. Jobs personally interviewed over 5,000 applicants during his
lifetime, managing all the hiring for his team.
4. Cant Get No Satisfaction
What do Google, Yahoo, and Facebook have in common? All are billion dollar
companies that started in dorm rooms. Great business leaders are never satisfied
and continually strive to take their business to the next level. As Ingvar Kamprad, the
founder of IKEA, said, The most dangerous poison is the feeling of achievement. The
antidote is to every evening think what can be done better tomorrow.

life is kaput, and the list goes on. But even with all these uncertainties, people are still
attracted to the start-up world. There are just as many, if not more reasons to take the
leap and go start your own business. Here are just a few:
1. Your posterity. If youre a doctor, plumber or bus driver its hard to imagine you
passing your career on to your loved ones. But if you own your own business, thats
something you can pass on to the next generation. And be proud of it, because you
created it.
2. Job security. Have you ever been laid off, downsized, or fired? If you have, you get
this. With entrepreneurship the security lies in the fact you are your own boss. You run
the show and dont have to worry about getting let go.
3. Skills. People ask me how I learned about SEO, social media, pay-per-click, PR
and all the other marketing techniques I utilize. I tell them that I was forced to learn
them, otherwise I wouldnt survive. The same way I was forced to learn how to build
a spreadsheet, how to balance a budget, how to negotiate leases and countless other
skills I picked up because I was the only resource I had. While developing new skills
can be tough and takes times, it can pay off in spades. These skills will be invaluable
throughout your life.
4. Reinvention. Ive started and sold several companies over my career. And every
time I sell a company, Im presented with an opportunity to reinvent myself all over
again. On the flip side, if I had received my law degree, Id be a lawyer (not a lot of
room to recreate myself). But as an entrepreneur, I get to be whatever I want to be.

Microsoft Virtual Academy Recognition of Prior

What is MVA?
Learning
Successful technologists never stop learning and great
technology never stops evolving. Microsoft Virtual
Academy (MVA) offers online Microsoft training delivered by
experts to help technologists continually learn, with hundreds of
Microsoft training courses, in 14 different languages. Our
mission is to help developers, knowledgeable IT professionals
and advanced students learn the latest technology, build their
skills, and advance their careers. Through MVA, we offer free
Microsoft training, and the entire service is hosted on Windows
Azure.

What is RPL?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process of
identifying your knowledge and skills against a qualification or
part thereof. The process involves the identification, mediation,
assessment and acknowledgement of knowledge and skills
obtained through informal, non-formal and/or formal learning.

Become an MVA member so that you can earn points for

your learning, achieve different levels of badges and status
relative to others in your country or around the world, and get
certificates when you complete an entire online training course.
Your personal dashboard helps you track your progress against
your personal learning plans. MVA learning opportunities
combine on-demand Microsoft training courses and live events:
On-demand, free Microsoft training courses help you learn
at your own pace, and when the time is right for your busy
schedule.

Gaining access
If you have considerable work experience, but you dont meet
the entry requirements of your chosen course, you may want to
apply for entry into a qualification. This is referred to as access.
The RPL application is evaluated against the entry requirements
of the qualification. If access is granted, the qualification on the
lower level is not awarded.

Are you exploring a career in technology? Get

started here! Whether youre interested in app
development or IT administration, these beginner
technology courses provide the stepping stones
to getting the foundational knowledge you need,
straight from the pros who know.

Recognition of Prior Learning provides an opportunity for

you to identify your learning, have it assessed and formally
acknowledged. At CTU, RPL can only be done against
qualifications offered by CTU.

Advanced standing or credits

As an individual you might have gained knowledge in
specific areas. When compared to outcomes against a CTU
qualification, your knowledge might cover some subjects. You
may apply for recognition of these subjects and this called
advanced standing or credits.
Once the assessment is done, recognition might be given for
specific subjects, but not for the entire qualification. You will
be required to complete the outstanding subjects, before the
qualification is awarded.
Closing date for applications
The closing date for RPL is 30 June of every year.
