Science GCSE 2016:

How to revise and maximise achievement
In School Support
Students complete controlled assessments for triple and double award science throughout the year, in both
Year 10 and Year 11. These are interspersed with subject delivery and are discrete sections of the
curriculum which each take around 7 hours of classroom time to complete. Preparation is carried out
during these sessions and two written papers and a practical will be carried out in this time. There is no
additional preparation outside of lesson required except for familiarization with the controlled assessment
process. For AQA these are often called ISAs, which stands for Investigative Skills Assignments.
Students can request support of their teachers or the Head of Department, Mr Berry at any time. Mr Berry is
available after period 6 for up to one hour every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday by appointment and is
happy to provide additional support to individuals or groups of students. In addition many other teachers
in the department also freely give up their time to support students.

Practice Extended Writing Technique
In each module revised identify 3 areas that you could write about extensively, Eg. a process, a technique, a
theory or an ethical issue.
Write out a list of keywords that you would want to have in your response. Frame or plan your answers by
bullet pointing key ideas. Then write out a written response using connectives. Finally, read through
checking for spelling and grammar errors. This practice will improve marks when answering the 6 mark
question in each exam paper.

Mind mapping
It is important to be able to connect your topics especially to achieve the A*/A standard. By mind
mapping all of your topics you will be able to see how they link. Dont be afraid to use all of your subject
knowledge in the exams.
Numeracy
You will need to be comfortable using equations, especially in physics. You must practice these types of
questions. Be aware of and use units in your answers. You must be able to draw line graphs and plot them
correctly. You must also be able to use statistics range, average, mean. Remember your calculator and a
sharp pencil on the exam day.
