Definitely Embedded systems and PLC ,SCADA are worth in today's world.

I'll not go very deep into these subjects.

Directly coming to ur question- The fact is that Embedded systems Engineer and
Automation Engineer are some of the most high paid jobs in the current job market.
Embedded systems engineer is a relatively new job classification that merges electronics
engineering and computer science (knowledge of 'C programming' is a must).

These Engineers work on hardware and software designs for electronic medical equipment,
industrial and military control systems, mobile communications devices, appliances, and
remote controls.
In our everyday life Embedded systems are playing important roles, even though they
might not necessarily be visible. Some of the embedded systems we use every day arecontrol the menu system on television, the timer in a microwave oven, a cell phone, an MP3
player or any other device with some amount of intelligence built-in.

To get a job in embedded systems the basic requirements will be a graduation/postgraduation in electronics. There are many such courses
Offered by various kinds of universities in India.
Easy entry is for engineering degree holders in different streams of Electronics engineering
like Electrical and electronics, Electronics and communication, Electronics and
instrumentation etc. Other degree holders in electronics like Bachelor of Science
(Electronics as main), Master of Science (Electronics) as main can also opt for a career in
Embedded systems. After getting the above mentioned degrees take 3 or 6 months training
on Embedded systems at any good reputed institution.
After completing the training course you might be able to land at an entry level job, usually
in a medium level company.

The real learning curve will only start at your first job where you will deal with real
issues and problem solving methods.
After gaining much experience from the first job (may be a 2 years) you can always switch
to big companies like Bosch, Samsung, and Siemens etc.
One thing I don't know whether it is true or not, but I've heard that in India there are not
much big opportunities in embedded systems and most are medium level companies or
start-ups.
Anyways, embedded systems is a rapidly growing industry where growth
opportunities are numerous.
COMING TO PLC AND SCADA ROLES IN TODAY'S WORLDA programmable logic controller, PLC is a digital computer which works on a software
to a make any automatic electromechanical operations/processes like control of machinery
on factory assembly lines, amusement rides, or light fixtures in the industries such as

Automobile factory, Steel Industry, Power generation industry, Paint shop, Packaging line,
Bakery etc.
As Industries adopt automation technologies to achieve1/Repeat accuracy in the function/process.
2/Adhering strict delivery schedules.
3/Reduction in human errors.
4/less dependence on labour.
5/International quality standards.
So you will find automation in each & every industry irrespective of its size. As the demand
of automated machines is on rise, you will find increase in manufacturers of such machines
& plants.
Now, the user and manufacturer of automated systems require engineers to design,
maintain & modify such systems. So ideally every industry needs such automation
engineers.
PLC & SCADA are also used in the Stackers, Reclaimers, Ship loaders and Conveyor belt
systems which are used in Ports and Mines.
SCADA is also extensively used in power distribution systems to control switching of circuit
breakers and monitor the power flow in feeders, as it is very difficult to control them
manually.
Like Embedded systems, a few months PLC & SCADA training is also required to become an
Automation Engineer. After completing your B.Tech or B.E (In any Electrical or Electronics
related branch) you can pursue this training & there are many institutions which are
providing PLC,SCADA & DCS training.
Whenever any industry wants to employ engineers they prefer automation
engineers rather than just typical degree/diploma engineers.
By saying 'worth it' if you meant about getting jobs, then that depends on you. Nowadays,
many Embedded and PLC Training institutes are giving job guarantees. I am not sure about
them. But, these courses make you trained and skilled enough to work in the respective
industries.
So these courses worth a lot if you are interested in it and have made up your mind in
building career in these sectors.
I hope now you have some idea that how much these things are worth in today's world.
We generally say Embedded Systems means H/W + S/W. But we do not mention the
percentage of H/W and S/W mix. It varies from the day Embedded System was introduced.
In initial days Embedded System means 90% H/W and 10%S/W. But now a days Embedded
System means 90% S/W and 10%H/W. When it comes to S/W one has to practice a lot.
Practicing SW is a wonderful art. You should establish a healthy relationship with the
system. This takes time. One has to have patience to wait and has be 100% genuine.
In S/W, there are two approaches, Top to Bottom approach and Bottom to Top
approach. Most of Electronic students take Bottom to Top approach. This was fine during the
initial days of Embedded Systems. But today's Embedded Systems calls for Top to Bottom
approach. There should be a change in Electronics student's approach in handling
Embedded Systems. Generally Electronics students think in detail. Their mind is filled with
finer details like ICs, Transistors and Circuits.
Most of the Electronics graduates are interested in Embedded Systems, but they are
not able to enter into the Embedded Systems field. The reason is, they refuse to change

their attitude towards programming. The following points will help an electronics student
shine in embedded field.
-

Programming computers and programming embedded systems are same

Let me write my own programming
First put the design on paper
Start writing algorithm from simple problems
Never change the code without changing the algorithm
Starting writing the code on paper first and then on computer

if anyone practices normal C programming in computers for few months he/she can easily
enter into embedded systems field. There are somethings specific to embedded systems
field and those things can be learned once you master C programming.
PLC and SCADA:
PLCs are industrial controllers for manufacturing companies. In terms of why they are used
instead of just hooking everything up to a Windows PC and letting the plant run:
PLC Hardware:
-The hardware in a PLC is designed to run all the time without EVER being shut down, run in
a harsh environment, and not need things like antivirus patches, windows updates etc
-The input/output cards in a PLC are designed to be modular in that you can choose to
purchase as many IO cards (or cards for other functions like networking) as you wish and
add these on to the PLC
PLC Software
-The language used to program a PLC (most commonly, Ladder Logic) is graphical in nature
and looks very similar to an electrical drawing showing relays and contacts. The reasoning
for this is that PLCs were invented to replace actual electrical relays that were hardwired
together. However, the same plant maintenance folks that debug and troubleshoot the
hardware often also troubleshoot the PLC code, so it is useful to have a language that looks
similar for maintainability.
It is ideal to learn PLC for beginners. Once you master it, go for SCADA. Choose wisely. It's
up to your interest.
