Without any kind of launch campaign, just count-
ing on the web, and on the quality of the product
and of its contents.
These are the figures for eart, the environmental
medium released in May 2009 with free down-
load under creative commons license.
From that experience, now a new project is born:
eart threepointzero
an evolution of eart’s concept.
New features, new multimedia content,
but first and foremost a new publisher, new
friends, new supporters and a new editorial
team, which spontaneously came together
around the project...
... so, from 8,000 to 0.
We are starting over with this new issue
zero/March 2010
Hoping this new adventure will hold the same
surprises as the last one...

Theorizing an “ENVIRONMENTAL MEDIA” has led us to make certain choices. We deci-
ded to create a digital publication that could be produced, circulated and read causing
far less impact than traditional magazines. Thus, we came up with features that are
coherent with that goal.

interactive pdf – we aid non-linear
fruition of text, increasing its usability. With
simple sharing options, every single article
can be posted on different platforms.
no print – we promote the culture of
reducing printing to the bare minimum, hel-
ping users become accustomed to the many
available online resources that are struggling
to replace traditional processes.
texts in the back – all texts are
placed at the back of the magazine, in one
continuous section with minimal graphic
elements. For those who really cannot do
without printing – for personal, professional
or health reasons – we draw a line between
the printable and non-printable areas.

green font – fonts are chosen amongst
those that require fewer resources when
printing is necessary.
horizontal layout - comfortable
on-screen visualization and reading minimi-
ze scrolling. The more readable a file is, the
less energy is required to use it. And quicker
use means less CO2 released into the atmo-
sphere.
monograph – to encourage new
suggestions and innovative ideas, in each
monograph issue a young emerging artist is
invited to explore the relationship between
man and his environment.

creative commons – we promote
editorial contents’ free circulation – with the
only requirement that you quote the source.
extra – multimedia content and useful
links complete editorial features and support
in-depth knowledge of the subject issue.
sharing – we want quality content to
reach a potentially interested readership.
Our goal is not to achieve visibility at all cost
– that’s why we have selected only certain

Susanna Anderegg
Swiss aid worker, she was sent to Peru by Mis-
ión Belén Immensee and supports the Cadep
Jma NGO in international management and
in projects regarding mining. She is a social
worker and educator.
Iacopo Benini
Foreign civil service volunteer, he was sent to
Peru by Focsiv and supports the Cadep Jma
NGP in project regarding mining and climate
change adjustment. He has a degree in inter-
national relations and is interested in social-
environmental conflicts.
Gennadi Nikolaevic Bogdanov
After graduating from Moscow’s State Acad-
emy in 1972, he was an actor with the reper-
tory company of Moscow’s Satire Theater. In
1982 he started collaborating with Moscow’s
State Academy and in 1986 was appointed
professor of Theater Biomechanics. In 1993
he started collaborating with Berlin’s Mime
Centrum, Seattle’s Freehold and Manchester’s
Talia Theatre, where he directed many shows.
In 1997 he was appointed director of the In-
ternaztional School of Biomechanics, first in
Moscow and then in Berlin. He’s been educa-
tion director of Perugia’s International Center
for Theatre Biomechanics Studies since 2004.
In 2009 he directed, for Milan’s CRT, his first
show in Italy.
Marco Butera
Expert in SoftPLC automation, he graduated
in Electronics and was passionate about infor-
matics since his childhood days. After the first
trip to Africa in 2000, he fell in love with that
world and has taken any chance to go back.
Stefano Carabelli
Electronics engineer and professor of Me-
chatronics at Turin’s Polytechnic, where he
was head of the Interdisciplinary Mechatronics
Lab until 2006. Since 1999 he started “bring-
ing out” from the lab a group of activities and
skills, as an entrepreneur, founding AMET
(Applied Mechatronics s.r.l.) in 1999, ACTUA
(Actuation and Control Technologies s.r.l.) in
2005, and TTW (Three Tilting Wheels s.r.l.) in
2007. Of the latter he is currently President
and Managing Director.
Lorenzo Cavassa
A Computer engineering graduate, he has
been working in the field of information tech-
nology since 1995. Cultivating a passion for
everything that is or was ‘informatics’ since
he was a boy, he’s found in Computer Scien-
tists without Borders the perfect balance be-
tween passion, charity work and profession.
Felice Di Luca
Software engineer and entrepreneur for over
10 years, he founded a company that pro-
duces web applications for large companies.
Always involved in charity work, he joined
Computer Scientists without Borders in 2007
to match his professional skills with the joy of
doing something for others.
Paolo Fresu
One of the most popular personalities in Ital-
ian jazz, both in Italy and abroad, he has
undertaken many initiatives in the past few
years: from the many concerts and records,
to movie soundtracks, to the incredible party-
festival Jazz in Time, which has been animat-
ing the August month in his native Berchidda
for fifteen years now.
John Grant
Author of “Co-opportunity” (out last January)
and of the award-winning “Green Marketing
Manifesto”, he was co-founder of St Luke’s,
the socially aware ad agency, and recently
started Abundancy Partners – a sustainable
innovation and strategy consultancy along
with Tamara Giltsoff and Jules Peck.
Alison Kriscenski
With a master’s in Environmental Science and
one in Sustainable Design, she has often crossed
boundaries between new media, the built en-
vironment and ecology, going from freelance
writer to managing editor of Inhabitat.com, to
her current post as Head of Communications
for the Forest Stewardship Council.
Claudio Massimo Paternò
With a diploma in acting from CUT, Umbria’s
Repertory Theater, he works for Perugia’s Fon-
temaggiore Innovation Repertory Theater and
Milan’s CRT. Bogdanov’s assistant and artis-
tic coordinator of the International Center for
Theater Biomechanics Studies in Mejerchol’d
since 2004. He edited the Italian translation of
B. Picon Vallin’s essay “Mejerchold”.
Karl-Ludwig Schibel
Sociologist, he taught social ecology at Frank-
furt’s University for twenty years. Since 1988
he has coordinated the yearly Fair or Practical
Utopias, which presents experiences and solu-
tions for the ecologic conversion of businesses
and society. Since 1992 he’s been part of the
Board of the Climate Alliance of the European
Cities, the biggest network of cities commit-
ted to safeguarding the climate, for which he
coordinates activities in Italy.

ISO 100 – Where was your passion for
photography born?
I started taking photos with a completely
manual camera someone gave me when
I was eleven. In the beginning, I liked
to “steal” people’s portraits, especially
strangers’. By the end of high school I
was surrounded by friends who could
say something about themselves – by
playing an instrument, drawing, painting
or writing; at that point I realized that I
wanted to say something about myself
too, and that photography could be my
means of expression. That’s when I star-
ted taking photos of what I “see”.
Long shot – In Medieval times, the two
parts of a diptych were joined by a cen-
tral hinge; what’s the hinge joining your
“diptychs”?

tographer for Turin’s Teatro Regio.
Umana-mente

My images always have a second me-
aning. The first impact is obviously the
image itself, which most times is “plea-
sant” to see, be it for what it portrays,
the tones I used or the composition,
which is always quite clean and simple.
But at a closer look, you’ll discover so-
mething else. Many people are convin-
ced that photography represents reality.
Wrong! In my studies I’ve discovered it
can never do that. And that is exactly
why I tend to create images that are
simple to read or interpret. I think the
hinge holding my diptychs together, in
this case, is precisely “the other mea-
ning”, which the two halves explain and
create.
Zoom – Which technical expedients did
you use for “UMANA-MENTE”?
My first instinct is to say: none! But it
would be a lie. Although they are not
strictly photographic, I think I used two
small expedients basically. The most vi-
sible one is a strong color de-saturation:
the main theme here is the environ-
ment. In the past few years, environ-
mental issues have started to be discus-
sed more – unfortunately, because the
situation has reached a critical point
(a strong-contrast black and white) –
but, at the same time, we are looking
for solutions to turn back towards an
environment that is on a “natural” scale
(including humans of course); that is
why my de-saturation shouldn’t be seen
as a “loss” of color, but as a “taking-
back”. In an evolutionary perspective.
The second expedient is in composition,
as I homogenized the transition betwe-
en the two images.
Bulb exposure – Do you think nature
insinuates the urban context, or is the
urban context surrounding nature?
As far as I’m concerned, I think the ur-
ban context is insinuating nature. I don’t
think it’s “surrounding” it – this word
makes me think of an army surrounding
a place. If there were an action of this
kind, with a visible army, the attack
would be catastrophic but also easier
to manage by the defense. Instead, I
think the urban context is insinuating
nature – this makes me think of a single
spy, which unfortunately can be just as
destructive as an army. I’m afraid that
the urban context has the advantage of
invisibility. With my work, I try to amplify
the perception we have of it.

Sebbene eart magazine promuova una
politica rigorosamente no-print, sappia-
mo che talvolta l’uso di carta e inchio-
stro sono necessari. Per questo i nostri
designer hanno pensato a un’alternativa
per ridurre al minimo l’impatto della
stampa. Ma alcune scelte non possiamo
che lasciarle ai nostri lettori: se stam-
pare su un foglio già usato sull’altro
lato. Se usare carta certificata. O carta
riciclata. O, meglio ancora, usare il lato
bianco di un foglio già utilizzato, di carta
riciclata e certificata. Una delle più note
organizzazioni che promuovono l’uso di
legname proveniente da foreste gestite
in maniera sostenibile (attuando una po-
litica di taglio e contestuale rimboschi-
mento), controllando la certificazione
di legno e suoi derivati, come la carta,
è il Forest Stewardship Council, meglio
conosciuto sotto l’acronimo FSC e per il
logo che ne identifica i prodotti.
MN: L’FSC, fondato nel 1993, oggi
comprende oltre 110 milioni di ettari di
foreste certificate in 82 paesi. Ma all’ini-
zio come avete fatto a fare in modo che
la gente riconoscesse e si allineasse ai
vostri standard?
AK: L’FSC è nato da una Conferenza
sullo Sviluppo Sostenibile delle Nazioni
Unite tenuta nel 1992, e sin dagli esordi
ha coinvolto un gruppo eterogeneo di
soggetti uniti dallo scopo comune di mi-
gliorare la gestione delle risorse in tutto
il mondo. È importante notare che l’FSC
è un’organizzazione di tipo volontario
e che le aziende, le organizzazioni e gli
individui che la sostengono sono guidati
da una varietà e da una combinazione
di interessi molto diversi, che vanno dal
benessere sociale alle problematiche
ambientali, alla responsabilità sociale
delle imprese. La struttura di gover-
nance dell’FSC è una sintesi di interessi
ambientali, sociali ed economici. Questo
tipo di struttura multi-stakeholder è
volta a dare pari dignità di espressio-
ne a tutte queste anime, incoraggia la
partecipazione e legittima un processo
decisionale basato sul consenso. È un
aspetto significativo del perché l’FSC
è considerato il sistema di certificazio-
ne forestale più credibile al mondo, e
del perché imprese, organizzazioni e
governi usano FSC come strumento per
raggiungere ognuno i rispettivi obiettivi.
MN: Il Nord e il Centro Africa, così come
il Medio Oriente, non fanno ancora parte
della mappa FSC. Avete una strategia
di comunicazione per approcciare le
imprese e le istituzioni in questi paesi?
AK: Nel 2007 l’FSC ha dato il via alla
sua Strategia Globale quinquennale
per definire le proprie priorità. Nell’am-
bito dei suoi cinque obiettivi principali
l’organizzazione ha specificato quali
sono le aree di particolare interesse, e
uno dei focus è proprio il miglioramento
dell’applicazione degli standard FSC nel-
la gestione di aree forestali nelle zone
tropicali (Goal 2b – Global Strategy).
Al momento sono in atto due progetti
per perseguire questo obiettivo: quello
denominato GEF, dedicato ai sistemi
di certificazione avanzati per la gestio-
ne sostenibile delle foreste tropicali, e
quello denominato PPP-NI, per il raffor-
zamento delle Iniziative Nazionali FSC
per migliorare la gestione delle foreste
tropicali. Una panoramica su questi
progetti è disponibile online. Inoltre c’è
l’FSC Global Development, la business
unit dedicata al brand management e
alla promozione del marchio nel mondo.
L’FSC infatti sta investendo in modo
particolare nelle aree tropicali, ma ha
anche attuato strategie in varie regioni
per rafforzare il proprio sistema nel mer-
cato, stimolare la domanda di prodotti
dietro ai quali c’è un approvvigionamen-
to responsabile, e far conoscere a più
gente possibile il proprio lavoro.
MN: Sul vostro sito c’è un documenta-
rio che mostra come vari consumatori
americani, intervistati presso un Home
Depot [catena di negozi per il fai-da-te,
NdT], nel 1999 sapessero a malapena
cosa significasse ‘certificato’, mentre
gli intervistati nei Paesi Bassi (dove il
49% della popolazione sapeva per cosa
stesse l’acronimo FSC) dicevano di aver
letto e visto delle pubblicità sull’FSC.
Nella sua esperienza, c’è un elemento
culturale che rende alcuni paesi più o
meno sensibili ai temi ambientali, o si
tratta solo di un problema di informazio-
ni disponibili e comunicazione?
AK: La consapevolezza ambientale varia
di paese in paese per molte ragioni
– la dimensione della popolazione, le
strutture e le politiche del governo, e
persino la posizione sono tutti fattori
da tenere in considerazione. Le stesse
variabili possono influenzare quanto sia
conosciuto o meno l’FSC. Per questo
l’organizzazione ha oltre 50 Iniziative
Nazionali nel mondo: ciascuna aiuta a
promuovere la gestione responsabile
delle foreste in modo coerente e signifi-
cativo per la popolazione locale. Queste
organizzazioni specifiche sostengono
la missione e la vision dell’FSC, e sono
parte integrante della sua opera. Online

Iniziative Nazionale e dei loro contatti.
MN: È evidente che per l’FSC è fonda-
noprintnoprintnoprintnoprint
mentale controllare che il proprio mar-
chio – che comunica in modo immediato
tutto ciò che l’organizzazione rappre-
senta – sia usato in modo corretto.
Crede che questo logo molto “visual”,
facile da ricordare e riconoscere, possa
aver contribuito in parte al successo
della certificazione FSC rispetto ad altri
sistemi internazionali?
AK: Il logo FSC è unico e facile da ricor-
dare. È un marchio registrato, e l’FSC
ha un forte programma dedicato proprio
alla sua promozione e protezione. Ma la
cosa più importante è ciò che quel logo
simboleggia: i più alti standard sociali e
ambientali e la certificazione per le fore-
ste più credibile a livello internazionale.
Dietro al logo ci sono l’integrità degli
standard FSC, del Programma di Accre-
ditamento FSC e della comunità globale
formata dai Membri FSC.
MN: “Please think FSC before you print”
è una bella chiusura per le e-mail.
AK: Grazie. Vogliamo ricordare che FSC
è una buona scelta, una scelta respon-
sabile. Anche la carta riciclata è una
buona scelta e, visto che gli standard
FSC includono anche un marchio per
i prodotti riciclati, questa frase può
fare riferimento anche a essi. A livello
globale, la domanda di carta è immensa
e ci si aspetta che continui a crescere.
L’FSC non incoraggia l’esplorazione di
nuove foreste, ma promuove la cor-
retta considerazione di fattori sociali e
ambientali quando questo avviene. Per
questo l’FSC non è un’alternativa alla
conservazione del patrimonio boschivo,
ma un sostegno al dialogo globale sulla
gestione responsabile delle foreste e
un forum di discussione internazionale
dove si possano creare soluzioni reali.
Il messaggio è che, se continuiamo a
sfruttare certe risorse, dobbiamo farlo in
modo responsabile e l’FSC è uno stru-
mento chiave per riuscirci.

Sostenibilità 2.0
Intervista a John Grant

Dopo il successo di “The New Marke-
ting Manifesto”, indicato da Amazon.
com come uno dei dieci migliori libri di
business del 1999, e di “The Green Mar-
keting Manifesto”, che ha vinto il British
Book Award 2008 (Design & Production)
nella categoria ambiente (tradotto in
italiano da Brioschi lo scorso anno),
John Grant è tornato. Il suo nuovo libro,
appena pubblicato da Wiley, si chiama
“Co-opportunity”. Pur essendo impe-
gnato in una serie di progetti (compresi
i suoi prolifici blog greenormal.blog-
spot.com e www.coopp.net), ha trovato
un momento per dirci qualcosa di più
su se stesso e sulle sue idee – dimo-
strandosi più disponibile e generoso di
quanto avremmo potuto sperare. Ma del
resto stiamo parlando di uno che si fir-
ma, semplicemente, con una simpatica
emoticon personalizzata.
MN: Puoi dirci come hai iniziato a in-
teressarti alle tematiche ambientali e
sociali?
JG: Professionalmente ci sono stati vari
passaggi successivi. Al St Luke a metà
degli anni ’90 già si incominciava a
masticare queste tematiche, provando a
capire cosa avrebbero significato per il
mercato. Intorno al 2001 ho aderito a un
forum del Future Group che si occupava
di commercializzazione e sostenibilità.
Nel 2002 ho fondato una società che si
occupava di content per sponsorizzazio-
ni sostenibili (esperienza che non è mai
veramente decollata), poi nel 2004 ho
cercato di lanciare un marchio di qualità
ecologica denominata “not bad” (idem)
e così via. Ora ho scritto diversi libri
sull’argomento e continuo a fare molta
consulenza in questo ambito; ma a volte
è altrettanto importante realizzare un
progetto che ti insegna qualche nuova
strategia o applicazione (ad esempio
nei media sociali) da usare poi per una
buona causa. Al momento sono nel bel
mezzo del lancio di una consulenza
congiunta con due altre persone, Jules
Peck e Tamara Giltsoff (che ne sanno
molto più di me di sostenibilità), su di
un progetto denominato Abundancy.
Negli ultimi 2 anni ho anche lavorato su
un’altra start-up verde, Ecoinomy.
A livello personale, come molti altri, sin
da bambino mi affascinavano alberi,
formiche, bruchi e così via. Quando mi
chiedevano cosa avrei voluto fare da
grande, invece del classico pompiere,
dicevo di voler diventare commissario
forestale. Nella mia fase adolescenzia-
le da giovane idealista, mi sono molto
interessato a tematiche come la pover-
tà, la giustizia, i diritti umani – il tutto
farcito con una sana dose di yoga/ve-
getarianesimo/pacifismo/cultura hippy.
Ma il mio principale interesse, oggi
come oggi, è pensare a come costruire
una società migliore e a quali sono gli
strumenti utili per farlo. Mi sembra sia
questa la cosa più importante, e che
le istanze ambientali e sociali ne siano
solo effetti collaterali. Suppongo sia
l’ennesima fase della mia vita (Erik Eri-
kson una volta ha detto che arrivati alla
mezza età attacchiamo con la “genera-
vità”: le questioni della nostra eredità
collettiva e di cos’è meglio “per il bene
della specie”).

MN: Quando hai annunciato il tuo nuovo
blog www.coopp.net su Greenormal, hai
dichiarato che avresti tenuto il mar-
keting e l’innovazione verdi separati
dall’innovazione sociale: “Il confine è la-
bile e, quando avrò dei dubbi, farò post
incrociati”. Puoi darci qualche esempio
di quanto è labile quel confine?
JG: Pepsi Refresh, che ho postato sul
blog Coopp, in realtà è una campagna
marketing (che, guarda caso, applica il
crowdsourcing e una piattaforma che
coinvolge i consumatori per trovare fondi
per beneficienza). È marketing per una
causa, più che sostenibilità pura e sem-
plice, ma è certamente sulla lunghezza
d’onda giusta. Negli ultimi mesi mi ha
stupito anche quante agenzie e uomini
di marketing abbiano adottato l’approc-
cio di tipo ecosistema collaborativo – ad
esempio, tanti mi invitano da loro per
parlarne. Mi aspettavo che questo libro
avrebbero potuto “saltarlo” perché è più
incentrato sulle imprese e sull’innova-
zione sociali. Ma invece abbiamo riscon-
trato un forte interesse iniziale da parte
della comunità “green marketing” (per
semplificare i termini). E anche da quella
“non green”. Forse per loro si tratta di un
libro-trend? C’è stato un grande cam-
biamento di umore nell’ultimo anno, un
passaggio dall’apparenza alle radici – dal
fare l’orto al sapere da dove arrivano le
uova che mettiamo in tavola, fino alla
cultura folk e “frucook” (come l’ha chia-
mata Ed di Futerra).
MN: Cosa c’è in “Co-opportunity” che
mancava in “The Green Marketing Mani-
festo”? Cos’è cambiato nei 3 anni tra un
libro e l’altro?
JG: Il nuovo libro nasce da una parte del
green marketing manifesto che iniziava a
dare uno sguardo ai nuovi modelli sociali
e di business, come la condivisione, il
leasing, l’andare insieme per locali e così
via. Ma i due libri sono molto diversi. Con
“Green Marketing Manifesto” ho tentato
di spiegare e classificare gli approcci che
“valeva la pena” adottare in un’era in cui
il greenwashing era davvero un proble-
ma e una minaccia. “Co-opportunity”
invece è un manuale di riferimento per
innovatori sociali, gente che ha idee da
sviluppare per imprese sociali, per chi
deve formulare nuove politiche, sostene-
re una causa o realizzare una campagna.
Copre diversi tipi di esempi, dei quali
alcuni sono “green” (ad esempio Transi-
tion Towns o il Walmart Index) e altri no
(ad esempio MyObama o M2M). Direi
che sono entrambi libri sulla sostenibilità
e l’innovazione. Credo anche che ci sia
stato un cambiamento verso soluzioni
più visionarie, e verso approcci da parte
della cittadinanza collettiva piuttosto che
da parte degli individui come consuma-
tori (10 piccole cose che puoi comprare
per cambiare le cose). Il mio editore, per
riassumere tutto in modo accattivante,
dice che “Co-opportunity” è “Sostenibi-
lità 2.0” e in effetti parla molto anche di
social network e di digitale.
MN: Cosa ne pensi della campagna In-
ternet for Peace lanciata da Wired Italia?
E ti sembra che il web abbia contribuito
alla comunicazione ambientale e sociale
in modo davvero innovativo e significa-
tivo?
JG: La campagna di Wired è sicuramente
interessante e intelligente – dovrò par-
larne sul blog. Non sono sicuro però che
il ruolo giocato da Internet negli eventi
politici recenti, per quanto rilevante, lo
qualifichi per un premio per la pace...
Non sono sicuro che #iranelections sia
al livello di un Mandela o di una Piazza
Tienanmen. Il web ci ha dato degli stru-
menti meravigliosi per collegarci agli
altri esseri umani. Ad esempio l’estate
scorsa, durante un festival su insetti,
arte ed ecologia (Pestival), abbiamo
creato su Twitter un gioco di ruolo ispi-
rato agli alveari, completo di caccia al
tesoro-polline su altri siti (si dovevano
trovare varie centinaia di fiori nascosti
e indicarli alle altre api), e di un adde-
stramento/briefing completo sui 23 ruoli
che si possono assumere in un alveare,
con indicazioni su come interagire con
gli altri nei vari casi. Il web ci ha dato
anche modi fantastici di coordinare e or-
ganizzare: ci sono Meetups, Flashmobs,
hack days e così via... fino al crowdfun-
ding vero e proprio e al sistema P2P che
Obama ha usato in campagna elettorale
per prendere contatti con gli elettori. È
un tamtam fondamentale, fatto di blog,
Twitter e altri circuiti, permette a Tree-
hugger o World Changing flussi infor-
mativi maggiori e, oltre a tutto questo,
è una piattaforma per campagne come
quelle di Avaaz e Virgance.
MN: Qual è il mezzo di comunicazione
ambientale e sociale più efficace?
La conversazione. Tra persone, faccia
a faccia. Alcune cose si diffondevano
all’impazzata già prima che nascesse
Internet, e ci riuscivano (idee politiche e
religiose, pettegolezzi e voci di corrido-
io) perché erano urgenti, importanti e
perché chi le riferiva aveva enormi inte-
ressi personali. Nell’esplorare la que-
stione del cambiamento climatico, ad
esempio, mi rendo conto che continuo a
chiedermi come abilitare una maggiore
interazione faccia a faccia, per sostene-
re e difendere qualcosa, educativa. Su
un piano più ampio, stiamo incubando
un modo completamente diverso di
organizzare le società umane e questo
richiederà moltissime cellule di intera-
zione umana. Il network è perfetto per
unire quelle cellule, ma è solo quando
iniziamo a parlare, pensare e vivere in-
sieme che iniziamo a cambiare. La mia
esperienza, almeno, è questa.

Time in jazz: un’idea,
un sogno, una storia
a lieto fine
Intervista a Paolo Fresu

Prendi un piccolo paese della Gallura,
l’entusiasmo di uno dei suoi abitanti, la
sua abilità come trombettista jazz, la
nascita di un’idea che si trasforma in un
successo, di pubblico e di critica. Gli in-
gredienti per una bella storia ci sono tutti
e il lieto fine è assicurato: Time in Jazz, il
festival internazionale di Berchidda (OT),
è da oltre vent’anni uno degli appunta-
menti estivi più attesi e più frequentati
della Sardegna e Paolo Fresu, suo ideato-
re e direttore artistico, uno dei più grandi
jazzisti attuali.
È una storia, quella di Time in Jazz che
non può essere raccontata senza tene-
re presente l’ambiente in cui si svolge.
Perché è vero che esiste un legame
stretto tra persone e luoghi e che questi
si condizionano e si influenzano a vicen-
da. E ciò è tanto più vero se pensiamo a
Berchidda, alla sua posizione geografica,
al territorio circostante: si trova in cima a
una collina da cui si scorge uno scenario
fatto di rocce che al sole del tramonto
riescono a mostrare tutte le tonalità del
rosso. Nella campagna greggi di peco-
re chiazzano i prati, verdissimi dopo le
piogge invernali, giallo ocra dopo che
il sole estivo le ha scaldate per giorni.
E poi, lungo le strade tortuose, i tron-
chi sanguinanti degli alberi da sughero
rimasti nudi dopo che la loro corteccia
è stata portata via. Ed è proprio qui che
ogni anno, in agosto, musicisti e artisti di
tutto il mondo si ritrovano e danno vita
a performance entusiasmanti. È qui che
pulsa il cuore del festival, la sua organiz-
zazione, e dove nasce l’associazione che
porta il nome dell’evento e che da anni si
occupa dell’appuntamento estivo. Scopo
dell’iniziativa è dare spazio a musicisti e
ad artisti che, dotati di talento e di abili-
tà, trovano poco riconoscimento in Italia.
E, allo stesso tempo, il festival, cre-
scendo e diventando sempre più noto e
frequentato, ha permesso di contribuire
all’economia locale, facendo conoscere il
territorio a livello nazionale e internazio-
nale. Ma il festival non è solo un momen-
to “turistico” da urlare e vivere durante
il suo clou in agosto; la ricaduta sul
territorio si traduce in un fermento che
dura tutto l’anno: fucina di idee e cono-
scenze, il festival coinvolge 200 volontari
di età compresa tra i 14 e i 60 anni, un
gruppo straordinario che ha la possibilità
di uscire da quel sentiero di marginalità
e staticità tipico di altre realtà territoriali
simili, non solo sarde. Per capire di più lo
spirito che muove il Festival e tutto ciò
che sta intorno, abbiamo fatto alcune
domande al suo ideatore Paolo Fresu
che, impegnato in un tour mondiale, ha
trovato alcuni minuti per rispondere alle
nostre domande.
IT: Come nasce l’idea di un festival del
jazz?
PF: È una bella domanda. Nasce dalla
voglia di fare qualcosa di importante.
Per se stessi, per il luogo in cui si è nati
e vissuti, per la musica e il jazz. Time
in Jazz vede la luce nella metà degli
anni Ottanta: io, allora, iniziavo la mia
carriera professionale e presi spunto
proprio da alcune realtà festivaliere che
stavano nascendo in Sardegna e cui ero
stato invitato. Una era quella di Cagliari
e un’altra quella di Sant’Anna Arresi,
piccolissimo centro del Sulcidano, che
sembrava essere molto vicina a quel-
la di Berchidda per tipologia di luogo.
La differenza era che Sant’Anna Arresi
era sul mare e dunque aveva una forte
attrattiva turistica, mentre Berchidda
è un paese dell’interno. La scommessa
dunque fu quella di portare un largo pub-
blico nell’interno della Sardegna ponen-
do in discussione il concetto di territorio
e di movimento turistico e culturale.
Ancora si parlava poco di valorizzazione
del territorio a meno che non si trattasse
della zona costiera o delle spiagge della
Costa Smeralda. Coscienti di questo, svi-
luppammo il programma di Time in Jazz
puntando su progetti originali che non si
sentivano altrove e che quindi “obbliga-
vano” la gente a venire a Berchidda. Suc-
cessivamente si è rafforzato il rapporto
con il territorio, con la cultura locale, con
l’ambiente. Insomma, Time in Jazz non
voleva essere una manifestazione calata
dall’alto o imposta, bensì un volano
capace di produrre sviluppo legando
sempre di più l’arte con il territorio e in-
terrogandosi sul senso di un contenitore
culturale in grado di cambiare il percorso
di una comunità e di un intero territorio.
Ne sono esempi il PAV, ovvero il Progetto
Arti Visive, e Semida - Museo all’aperto
del Monte Limbara.
IT: È indubbio che il festival sia da con-
siderarsi elemento positivo per l’eco-
nomia locale e occasione di scambio e
crescita per i giovani del territorio. Ma,
d’altra parte, teme che il festival possa
far perdere a Berchidda la sua identità e
specificità?
PF: Certo il rischio c’è, ma cerchiamo di
stare molto attenti. Perché è bella questa
idea del festival di successo seguito
ormai da diverse decine di migliaia di
persone ma che cerca di mantenere una
dimensione familiare e paesana; siamo
coscienti del fatto che questa sia la chia-
ve di successo per una manifestazione
di respiro internazionale che sa dialogare

con il proprio luogo di origine.
Del resto era questa la scommessa:
scardinare il vecchio concetto della cen-
tralità geografica e culturale. Berchidda,
proprio per le sue caratteristiche, può
diventare per dieci giorni il centro del
mondo e proprio da Time in Jazz posso-
no partire idee e input da portare verso
l’esterno.
IT: Nonostante il successo dell’evento,
avete riscontrato in questi anni delle
difficoltà, magari con le persone più an-
ziane e più restie ai cambiamenti oppure
con le istituzioni?
PF: I problemi con le istituzioni sono i pro-
blemi di sempre e non sono cambiati. Il
discorso sarebbe troppo lungo e articola-
to per poterlo affrontare, e magari risol-
vere, in questa sede. Anche perché è un
problema che investe in senso più ampio
tutta la filosofia di produzione culturale
del nostro Paese. In fondo la Sardegna,
in quanto regione a statuto speciale, se
la passa meglio di altre ma i problemi
della cultura in Italia si ripercuotono su
tutto e su tutti. In buona sostanza non
si può programmare guardando troppo
lontano nel tempo e, inoltre, la ricerca
delle risorse economiche è complessa e
queste sono sempre meno. Insomma, è
una politica che di certo non premia, ad
esempio, le associazioni culturali come la
nostra che devono rischiare in proprio. Il
rapporto con il paese e con la sua comu-
nità invece è cambiato molto. È vero che
nei primi anni molti vedevano il festival
come una cosa inutile e superflua capa-
ce solo di generare problemi, ma oggi
sono tutti d’accordo nell’aver compreso
l’importanza del festival non solo in rela-
zione all’evento musicale (molti magari
non amano il jazz o non lo capiscono),
ma anche come strumento per rivitaliz-
zare il paese, per veicolare un’immagi-
ne positiva dello stesso, del territorio e
della Regione e, non ultimo, il fatto che
Time in Jazz ha un indotto economico
sul territorio ben superiore al milione e
mezzo di euro. Inoltre il festival riesce a
coinvolgere nella sua organizzazione un
numero elevatissimo di volontari ed è
ormai entrato in tutte le case diventando
un evento fortemente sentito e atteso.
IT: Time in Jazz nasce come festival del
jazz e poi cresce, non solo in popolarità
ma anche nella creazione di altre pro-
poste culturali: perché questa necessità
di allargare il campo anche alle altre
espressioni artistiche?
PF: Perché questa è la mia idea dell’arte
e perché credo che non abbia senso or-
ganizzare una manifestazione di tale por-
tata se questa si limita ad programmare
qualche concerto più o meno riuscito. La
parola ‘festival’ è una parola che implica
una festa che è un insieme di cose che
coinvolgono tutto e tutti e dove la musi-
ca e l’arte sono i primi protagonisti ma
non gli unici. È l’unico modo di lasciare
un segno profondo nel territorio facendo
crescere tutti. Perché un festival può
essere uno straordinario strumento di
crescita. È questo concetto che scardina
il pensiero comune e dominante della
cultura effimera e non indispensabile...
IT: Cosa vorrebbe per il futuro del festi-
val, dell’associazione Time in Jazz e di
Berchidda?
PF: Una realtà più stabile che ci permetta
di lavorare in serenità senza dover sem-
pre e comunque cercare di convincere
il prossimo che ciò che facciamo ha più
che una buona ragione per essere fatto.

L’ambiente come luogo
teatrale
Intervista a Gennadi N. Bogdanov

Tra ‘600 e ‘800, l’ambiente teatrale, in-
teso come spazio fisico dove persone di
ogni stato sociale intessevano rapporti
e relazioni, riservava all’intrattenimento
importanza meramente accessoria. La
platea, senza sedie, e i palchi, concepiti
come piccoli “pied-à-terre” per incontri
d’affari o appartati rendezvous, agevo-
lavano la costruzione di un mondo “al-
tro”, un ambiente non illuminato dalla
luce del sole, dove l’uomo, protagonista
e spettatore al contempo, poteva astrar-
si, diventando di fatto “altro da sé”.
Dalla seconda metà dell’XIX secolo la
prospettiva cambia e da luogo di evasio-
ne fisica dal mondo, il Teatro diventa il
tempio dell’evasione mentale. Il centro
di gravità diventa ora l’intrattenimento,
che fattosi adulto, si destreggia in spet-
tacoli sempre più strutturati. Compaiono
le poltrone, e la piazza improvvisamente
si fa silenziosa. Seppur mutato nelle
sue caratteristiche funzionali, la natu-
ra del luogo non cambia: un ambiente
“altro”, separato dal mondo. L’artista
diventa così vero e unico protagonista
del teatro e questo rinnovato ruolo lo
induce, inevitabilmente, a porsi nuove
domande. La risposta è la creazione di
metodi e sistemi teatrali più o meno
strutturati, che tendano a educare e
organizzare il lavoro dell’artista, in rap-
porto all’ambiente percettivo e spaziale
e ai suoi limiti. La Biomeccanica Teatrale
di Mejerchol’d è un esempio lampante
della necessità dell’arte teatrale di darsi
regole pedagogiche chiare.
CMP: Maestro Bogdanov, come nasce il
noprintnoprintnoprintnoprint
suo rapporto con la Biomeccanica Tea-
trale di Mejerchol’d?
GNB: Ho una formazione attoriale. Dopo
aver superato una difficile selezione
sono stato ammesso al GITIS, l’Acca-
demia di Stato di Mosca. Cinque anni
durissimi che mi hanno permesso di
acquisire quelle conoscenze utili per
lavorare in teatro in maniera professio-
nale. Ho studiato con i migliori maestri
dell’Unione Sovietica tra cui alcuni
attori di Stanislawskij. Ho appreso tante
tecniche oltre la recitazione (balletto
classico, scherma, acrobatica, il lavoro
con la maschera neutra) che mi hanno
permesso di ampliare le mie possibilità
espressive. A 23 sono stato ingaggiato
come attore presso la compagnia del
Teatro della Satira di Mosca, diretto da
Valentin Plucek, in cui gli attori, oltre
che recitare, dovono ballare e a vol-
te cantare. Credevo di aver imparato
tutto durante gli anni in accademia,
ma mi sbagliavo. Gli studi accademici
sono solo un punto di partenza, una
base solida da cui far partire il proprio
processo artistico.Appena ingaggiato, il
direttore del teatro invitò me e altri gio-
vani attori, a seguire le lezioni di un suo
vecchio maestro, Nikolaj Kustov, attore
e istruttore di Biomeccanica Teatrale al
Teatro Mejerchol’d negli anni ’30.
CMP: Perché ha privilegiato questo
sistema di educazione teatrale?
GNB: Il mio principale problema era il
rapporto tra le idee presenti nel perso-
naggio, il movimento e lo spazio sceni-
co, l’ambiente in cui il personaggio vive
e sviluppa la sua storia. Un problema
comune cui gli attori più anziani con cui
lavoravo quotidianamente, che cercava-
no di rispondere con la loro esperienza
e con l’istinto. Il Maestro Kustov invece,
aveva un approccio del tutto nuovo per
me e per tutti i miei colleghi, perché
cercava sempre di rispondere ai proble-
mi in modo diretto, senza inutili velleità
metafisiche. Ho potuto così fare espe-
rienza di una visione altra dell’arte: una
prospettiva tridimensionale che parte
dal concreto e dalla coscienza dello
spazio che ti circonda e arriva alla piena
conoscenza e consapevolezza dei propri
strumenti espressivi. Grazie ai principi
che costituiscono il complesso sistema
d’educazione teatrale della Biomecca-
nica Teatrale di Mejerchol’d, sono stato
in grado di migliorarmi sempre di più:
ho potuto conoscere e lavorare sui miei
limiti, strutturare il mio lavoro artistico
su basi solide e stabili. Una bussola con
cui mi sono potuto orientare durante i
miei 15 anni di lavoro scenico.
CMP: Nello specifico, quali sono gli
obiettivi principali di questo sistema?
GNB: L’obiettivo primario è sicuramente
arrivare a percepire il proprio corpo in
maniera tridimensionale, posizionando-
lo nello spazio e osservando dall’ester-
no la propria posizione. Secondo passo
è quello di considerare la relazione con
gli oggetti o punti di riferimento che lo
circondano e di valutarne i movimenti.
Un lungo percorso di consapevolezza
che mi è costato anni di lavoro fisico e
di esercizi, che hanno portato a otti-
mizzare la mia concentrazione, e che
hanno reso ogni mia azione sempre
concreta, finalizzata a qualcosa e non
frutto di stati emotivi inconsulti. Ca-
pire che lo spazio ha un ritmo e che le
proprie azioni devono accordarsi con
questo per creare un’armonia precisa, è
un altro stadio di questo lungo percorso
di conoscenza. Una sedia non serve
solo per sedersi, come un tavolo non
solo per poggiare un oggetto. Essi sono
spazi che un attore deve capire, cono-
scere e sfruttare per esprimere lo stato
d’animo del personaggio; devono en-
trare nella metafora delle azioni dell’at-
tore; lo spazio teatrale deve essere
esso stesso metafora. In questa ottica,
ogni oggetto è esso stesso uno spazio,
che nelle mani coscienti dell’attore
assume un ruolo specifico e racconta
una parte della storia. Questo grado di
consapevolezza, tuttavia, non è ancora
sufficiente: l’attore stesso, quando è in
scena, crea il proprio spazio e lo modi-
fica costantemente attraverso i propri
movimenti, che non sono generici, ma
hanno al loro interno una idea chiara,
precisa, un obiettivo concreto, in grado
di “modificare l’aria” e di dare all’am-
biente una nuova vita.
CMP: Cosa intende con l’espressione
“modificare l’aria”?
GNB: Mi rendo conto che questa espres-
sione può sembrare poco concreta.
Tutto quello che circonda un attore è
spazio, e concorre a formare la meta-
fora che è propria dell’arte. L’attore è
allo stesso tempo sia opera d’arte, in
quanto il volume del suo corpo parte-
cipa a livello materiale alla creazione
dello spazio, sia creatore, perché pensa
sempre a quello che fa e mette in forma
il suo pensiero attraverso le sue azioni.
L’artista, in questo senso, è in grado in
ogni momento di modificare, attraverso
la consapevolezza del proprio lavoro,
l’ambiente in cui lavora, provocando
l’emozione dello spettatore. Nella mia
vita ho visto pochi attori riescono a
“modificare l’aria” e certamente nessun
sistema pedagogico, per quanto col-
laudato o derivante da un percorso di
ricerca serio, è in grado di insegnarlo.
Gli anni di studio della Biomeccanica
Teatrale di Mejerchol’d con il Maestro
Kustov, mi sono serviti sicuramente a
essere cosciente di questo e di avere
sempre chiari i miei obiettivi così nella
professione, come nella vita.
CMP: E ora che sono passati molti anni
e oltre la conoscenza del metodo, c’è
anche l’esperienza, come è cambiato il
suo rapporto con questa tecnica?
GNB: Il mio lavoro si è evoluto: da atto-
noprintnoprintnoprintnoprint
re sono diventato regista e soprattutto
pedagogo. L’eredità morale che il mio
maestro mi ha lasciato, mi è servita
a intraprendere un percorso di cono-
scenza ulteriore, più profondo, sempre
estremamente concreto, ma assoluta-
mente diverso nella vita di tutti i giorni.
Il mio modo di vedere la realtà che mi
circonda è cambiato. Il Maestro Kustov
mi ripeteva spesso che gli occhi di un
attore vedono più di quelli di una per-
sona normale, che l’attore, per questo
motivo, è un “supereroe”, perché è in
grado contemporaneamente di percepi-
re e pensare a tantissime cose insieme,
e sempre con assoluta consapevolezza
e coscienza.
CMP: Certamente è un processo molto
difficile, ma è veramente attuabile?
GNB: Questo modo di affrontare la vita
mi è costato enorme fatica all’inizio,
quando ancora ero attore al Teatro della
Satira di Mosca ma man mano tutto è
diventato naturale e in poco tempo si
è trasformato in un processo mentale
intimo e veloce.
CMP: Come maestro, quanto è difficile
poter trasmettere questa consapevolez-
za ai propri allievi?
GNB: Insegnare, implica per me,
prima di ogni altro aspetto, una dupli-
ce responsabilità: da un lato verso la
tradizione della Biomeccanica Teatrale
di Mejerchol’d, che il mio maestro ha
trasmesso a me e che io trasmetto
e trasmetterò ai miei allievi, per non
snaturarla nel rispetto della sua tradi-
zione; dall’altro verso gli allievi cui devo
trasmettere un insieme di conoscenze e
strumenti utili per il loro lavoro scenico.
Mi rendo conto che il compito che mi è
stato affidato è molto arduo e non riu-
scirei a portarlo avanti se non lavorassi
sempre con una totale apertura verso
gli altri. Questo è il modo migliore per
conoscere, meglio ogni giorno, l’am-
biente con cui ci si rapporta.
CMP: Quali sono i suoi prossimi obiettivi?
GNB: Porto avanti, a Perugia, il mio
lavoro di insegnate e regista presso
il CISBiT - Centro Internazionale Studi
di Biomeccanica Teatrale. Nel prossi-
mo aprile dirigerò la 13a sessione di
lavoro in sette anni. È molto importante
avere una struttura di riferimento che
non solo organizzi corsi ma che pro-
duca anche spettacoli. Nel novembre
2009 presso il CRT di Milano ho diretto
“Georges Dandin o il marito raggirato”
di Moliere con otto attori, tutti forma-
ti presso il CISBiT. È sicuramente una
grande soddisfazione vedere la nascita
di un gruppo di lavoro con un linguag-
gio comune e sono molto orgoglioso del
loro lavoro.

Masi Manimba,
università di vita

Era l’inizio del 2009 quando la sezione
Piemontese di ISF (Informatici Senza
Frontiere) entrò in contatto con il dott.
Antonio Campanaro dell’Alleanza Ospe-
dali Italiani nel Mondo. Antonio stava
cercando singoli od organizzazioni che lo
aiutassero nel realizzare un’aula informa-
tica completa di computer, videoproiet-
tore e collegamento alla rete Internet per
una struttura universitaria nella cittadina
di Masi Manimba, Repubblica Democrati-
ca del Congo. Le caratteristiche richieste
erano: autonomia elettrica (da raggiun-
gersi mediante un impianto fotovoltai-
co), alta affidabilità del sistema (data la
mancanza di assistenza specializzata in
loco), basso costo (o meglio: costi più
bassi possibile) e ampia possibilità di
personalizzazione della dotazione. Qui
siamo entrati in gioco noi. Antonio aveva
già molta esperienza nell’installazione di
sistemi di comunicazione satellitare e ali-
mentazione tramite impianti fotovoltaici,
quindi il contributo principale richiesto
ad ISF era legato alla progettazione e
installazione della parte informatica.
Ci siamo messi all’opera per preparare
un certo numero di computer, recupe-
rati, usati, installando sistemi operativi
opensource (Linux, o meglio, Ubuntu
Linux) e tutto il software necessario per
una struttura scolastica (browser, Skype,
Openoffice, ecc.)... localizzato ovviamen-
te in francese, la lingua ufficiale in R.D.C,
ex-colonia belga. A fine luglio 2009 un
aereo carico di strani borsoni si è alzato
da Torino, destinazione Kinshasa e poi
da lì il nostro viaggio è proseguito per
strada, fino a Masi Manimba. Ecco una
mail che scrisse Marco agli amici in Italia,
in una notte africana di agosto da Masi
Manimba, dopo molti tentativi dedicati a
far funzionare tutto per il meglio:
“Alla fine abbiamo vinto noi. Cari tutti
quelli che leggono. Non sapete quale gio-
ia immensa scrivervi questa mail attra-
verso la parabola satellitare che abbiamo
installato qui a Masi-Manimba in Congo.
Un posto davvero sperduto nella foresta
congolese, dove la città più vicina che
si possa vagamente dire tale è a 45 Km
di semi-sterrato, e la capitale è a 400
Km. Intorno, il nulla. L’Internet point più
vicino non funziona da febbraio e noi,
dopo 3 giorni di viaggio per arrivare sul
posto, dopo un palo di sostegno per la
noprintnoprintnoprintnoprint
parabola “inventato” a mo’ di McGyver,
dopo un router bruciato a causa sbalzi
di tensione dal generatore e qualche
inverter cimito, collegamenti sempre
precari e attrezzi inesistenti o antiquati…
beh, dopo una miriade di sfighe immen-
se e continue su tutti i fronti… Alla fine
eccomi qua a scrivervi dalla nostra ormai
bellissima connessione satellitare. Il gu-
sto che questa operazione con i suoi alti
e bassi, gioie e dispiaceri, ci ha dato e ci
sta dando… è indescrivibile. Qui fino a 2
ore fa eravamo davvero fuori dal mondo.
Adesso questa gente potrà avere Inter-
net e quindi assistenza medica remota,
comunicazione, informazione, lezioni
universitarie a distanza e chi più ne ha
più ne metta. Un’esperienza che chiun-
que dovrebbe fare per rendersi conto
di come molte cose che ci appaiano
scontate lì in Italia in realtà qui diventano
pura e semplice magia. Quando abbia-
mo captato il segnale del satellite (dopo
solo 12 ore di tentativi!) e abbiamo visto
apparire “onda verde” sul monitor del
pc, ci sembrava di avere trovato l’acqua
a 150 mt di profondità. Una festa e una
gioia che non avete idea. In Italia questa
operazione sarebbe stata banale, ma
qui vi assicuro… è un successo senza
precedenti, che getta il seme per una
crescita sostanziale di questo posto.
Non ci si rende conto di cosa significhi
qui questa parabola, fino a che non si
manda la prima mail, con il batticuore e
la consapevolezza di aver fatto una cosa
che aiuterà migliaia di persone. Adesso
bisogna iniziare a pensare a ulteriori
risorse (economiche, di tempo, materiali)
da destinare a questo posto per fare in
modo che diventi un centro di eccellenza
del Congo, attrezzatura, pc, competenze
a distanza possono essere utili…. Bè, che
dire, MBOTE! (saluti in dialetto locale).”
Siamo tornati a casa con occhi nuovi e
un nuovo cuore, ricco di esperienze, ric-
co di tutto ciò che abbiamo visto, di ogni
differenza e di tante consapevolezze. Lo
scandire delle ore nel corso della gior-
nata, le usanze locali, i punti di vista,
il concetto stesso di vivere e di vita, la
piccola, immensa pratica di ogni giorno:
la corrente elettrica, l’acqua corrente e
potabile, l’illuminazione notturna, ogni
cosa che qui ci sembra automatica,
scontata da avere, là semplicemente
non era. Tutto identico e al contempo
tutto diverso. Seduti nella penombra
della sera, quando si era finalmente
riusciti a instaurare il collegamento
Internet, festeggiavamo con un bel po’
di ottima birra congolese e parlavamo
(in realta’ era piu’ Marco che parlava: il
suo francese e’ francese, quello mio e
di Felice decisamente no) con il team di
elettricisti del posto, il cui aiuto è stato
fondamentale per il set-up dell’impianto
fotovoltaico e di comunicazione. Parla-
vamo di loro e della loro vita, di noi e
della nostra, del fatto che noi dall’Euro-
pa eravamo riusciti ad arrivare fin là con
circa 1.000 euro (il costo del biglietto
A/R Torino-Kinshasa via Bruxelles) e che
per loro quei 1.000 euro valevano come tito durante una partita a Trivial Pursuit.

mano... ma quanta acqua utilizziamo
tutti i giorni? Qual è la giusta misura? Di
quanta acqua ha bisogno un uomo per
lavarsi? Di quanta acqua ha bisogno un
uomo per sopravvivere? E un bambino?
La mente umana è così, specula su ogni
spunto di lettura del mondo, e ti ritrovi a
porti domande che forse avevi solo sen-
noprintnoprintnoprintnoprint
Le piccole aree urbane, in quanto sistemi
dotati di specifica identità, si distinguono
sia dagli altri sistemi sia dall’ambiente
esterno, per caratteristiche socio-cultu-
rali e ambientali intrinseche: è quello che
in letteratura si definisce milieu urbano.
Lo sviluppo di esperienze e politiche di
prossimità che tendono alla sostenibilità
ambientale in senso ampio ci dimostra
come queste piccole realtà territoriali,
in cui risiede il 50% della popolazione
europea, diventano veri e propri modelli
di sviluppo, non più solo per esse stesse,
ma estendibili all’intero sistema. Clima-
te Alliance, associazione che raccoglie
1.500 comuni ed enti territoriali euro-
pei, ne è testimonianza. I suoi membri
elaborano e attivano una larga gamma
di misure per la lotta al cambiamen-
to climatico, in particolare nei settori
energia e trasporto, e contribuiscono
alla conservazione delle foreste pluviali,
tramite campagne di sensibilizzazione
e il boicottaggio dei legnami tropicali in
partnership con i Popoli Indigeni delle
Foreste Pluviali.
“Local solutions for change” è il titolo
della prossima Conferenza Internazionale
promossa da Climate Alliance a Perugia
dal 14 al 16 aprile 2010, in collabora-
zione con Regione Umbria, Provincia e
Comune di Perugia. Spazio di confronto
e stimolo, a dimostrazione che il futuro
della lotta ai cambiamenti climatici è
local.
AS: Karl-Ludwig Schibel, membro della
Presidenza e Coordinatore per l’Italia del-
la Climate Alliance, qual è il ruolo delle
comunità locali, e delle amministrazioni
che ne sono espressione, nella lotta ai
cambiamenti climatici?
KS: Gli enti locali hanno un ruolo chiave
per la salvaguardia del clima perché
sono di loro competenza importanti cam-
pi d’attività legati alle emissioni di CO2.
Pensiamo in particolare a campi quali
la mobilità, l’energia – nello specifico la
produzione di energia da fonti rinnovabili
nel proprio territorio – ma anche l’effi-
cienza energetica, la gestione dei rifiuti,
la pianificazione urbanistica e natural-
mente le attività dell’ente medesimo:
il suo approvvigionamento energetico,
il parco veicoli, la gestione del proprio
patrimonio edilizio, gli acquisti di beni e
servizi (acquisti verdi).
Oltre alle attività che ricadono nell’am-
bito delle loro competenze, gli enti locali
hanno importanti funzioni per l’attuazio-
ne di norme, decreti, regolamenti, leggi
emanate dal governo nazionale, spesso
sulla base di provvedimenti europei.
Possono, ad esempio, facilitare la produ-
zione di energia rinnovabile attraverso il
regolamento edilizio, promuovere l’effi-
cienza energetica per l’esistente e per le
nuove costruzioni, adottare misure per
ridurre il traffico motorizzato individuale,
sensibilizzare la cittadinanza sulle que-
stioni del clima. Hanno un ruolo impor-
tante per stimolare il settore economico
attraverso collaborazioni pubblico-priva-
to (Il “Sole in Comune”, accordo volonta-
rio tra banche, fornitori, installatori, studi
tecnici per il fotovoltaico), programmi di
certificazione e formazione (Ecoprofit).
AS: L’essere un attore attivo quindi è alla
base della Climate Alliance?
KS: I membri della Climate Alliance si
impegnano a boicottare i legni tropicali
(preservazione delle foreste pluviali),
eliminare l’uso dei CFC (oggi fortuna-
tamente non più un gran problema) e
ridurre le emissioni dei gas serra nel
proprio territorio, ogni quinquennio del
10%. Sono impegni unilaterali, volontari.
I comuni però prendono quest’impegno
nella convinzione che non si tratta solo
di risolvere un problema globale, ma che
l’uscita dal fossile è comunque la stra-
da indicata per garantire uno sviluppo
sostenibile al territorio, per migliorare
la qualità dell’ambiente e della vita,
rendere l’ambiente più sano, rafforzare
la struttura economica del territorio e
renderlo più resiliente ai cambiamenti
climatici.
AS: Durante la prossima Conferenza In-
ternazionale di Perugia, Climate Alliance
festeggerà 20 anni di attività: possiamo
stilare un breve bilancio dell’attività
svolta?
KS: In questi due decenni, Climate
Alliance ha sviluppato un catalogo di
misure utili ai suoi membri per individua-
re quelle più idonee al proprio territorio,
alle risorse e alla volontà politica (Bus-
sola del clima, uno strumento elaborato
con finanziamenti europei durante gli
ultimi 15 anni). Consigliamo di iniziare in
casa propria per poi passare alla per-
formance energetica negli edifici della
pubblica amministrazione, le scuole, il
cimitero, lo stadio, il parco macchine
dell’ente, gli acquisti di beni e servizi,
ecc. Poi estendere le proprie attività al
territorio, migliorare il trasporto pub-
blico (Provincia di Roma), la ciclabilità
e pedonalità, e al contempo rendere
meno attraente l’uso dell’auto. Ferrara
da quasi vent’anni segue un programma
coerente. Favorire il termosolare (Bolza-
no), campagne di sensibilizzazione nelle
scuole come le nostre “Miglia verdi”
(tra molti altri Reggio Emilia, Ferrara,
Piacenza, Modena), quartieri industriali
verdi (ZIPA verde, Jesi). I comuni migliori
come Hannover e Freiburg in Germania,
L’Aia in Olanda, Bolzano, Ferrara, Reggio
Emilia o la Provincia di Roma in Italia
hanno sviluppato una propria strategia
sul clima. Vale a dire che non solo hanno
riunito in un apposito programma le
varie iniziative a favore del clima, ma
hanno istituito anche un piano di moni-
toraggio. Nel 2009 abbiamo lavorato con
un gruppo pilota composto da 6 comuni
(Bolzano, Genova, Jesi, Modena, Reggio
Emilia, Schio), due Province (Ancona e
Roma) e una Regione (Emilia-Romagna)
sul programma software ECORegion per
elaborare bilanci di CO2 a livello locale e
territoriale.
AS: Quali i risultati ottenuti finora?
KS: Abbiamo dei dati pubblicati da co-
muni tedeschi ed austriaci. Dimostrano
che, ad esempio, il Comune di Hannover
è riuscito dal 1990 di ridurre del 11,5% le
sue emissioni di gas serra. Sicuramente

al di sotto dell’impegno della Cliamate
Alliance, ma va anche detto che senza
il cambiamento delle condizioni quadro
nazionali ed europee, i comuni non sono
e non saranno in futuro in grado di fare
la loro parte. In questo contesto è molto
incoraggiante il cosiddetto Patto dei sin-
daci (Covenant of Mayors), cioè la prima
iniziativa con la quale la Commissione
Europea si rivolge esplicitamente agli
enti locali dicendo: riconosciamo il vostro
ruolo cruciale, vi chiediamo di darci una
mano per raggiungere i nostri obiettivi
del 20/20/20 nel 2020 (20% meno gas
serra, 20% più efficienza energetica,
20% più rinnovabili). In Italia i nove
enti locali e territoriali del gruppo pilota
ECORegion stanno lavorando sui propri
bilanci di CO2 e la Provincia di Roma ha
presentato i primi risultati alla COP 15 a
Copenaghen nel dicembre 2009. Bolzano
ha deciso di diventare CO2 neutral entro
il 2015 e ha presentato recentemente il
proprio piano a riguardo.
AS: L’Urban Sprawl e la Giusta Misura
sono stati i temi portanti della scorsa
edizione della “Fiera delle Utopie Concre-
te”, di cui lei è il coordinatore dal 1988.
Qualche anticipazione sul programma e
il tema della prossima edizione?
KS: La Fiera delle Utopie concrete 2010,
che si svolgerà dal 7 al 10 ottobre a Cit-
tà di Castello, vuole aprire una finestra
sull’Altotevere sostenibile presentando
le forze, le risorse, le soluzioni presenti
nell’Alta Umbria che oggi sono a dispo-
sizione dei cittadini, delle istituzioni,
delle imprese per rendere le proprie
attività e i consumi compatibili all’am-
biente. Saranno chiamati gli attori più
vari ad esporre offerte, prodotti e servizi
utili ad una vera transizione verso un
futuro sostenibile. Come distinguere
prodotti e servizi sostenibili da quelli
che non lo sono? Un primo criterio è se
la loro produzione ed il loro consumo
abbassano le emissioni dei gas serra
o meno. Nell’Altotevere c’è un’offerta
di prodotti e servizi che contribuiscono
alla riduzione dei gas serra, che hanno
un impatto ridotto in fase di produzione
e consumo, chiudendo i cicli nel terri-
torio e rafforzando l’economia locale.
Si tratta di una comunità latente che
ancora non si percepisce come tale.
Ne fanno parte il coltivatore diretto
che usa metodi biologici, il falegname
che produce porte e finestre ad alto
isolamento termico, l’amministratore
o il tecnico comunale che promuove la
costruzione di piste ciclabili, i distributo-
ri, installatori, progettisti di impianti per
la produzione di energia, il negozio che
offre latte, detersivi o altri beni in forma
sfusa, l’albergatore che rinuncia alle
porzioni monodose nel buffet della pri-
ma colazione – e molto altro ancora. La
Fiera delle utopie concrete 2010 vuole
far emergere in modo esemplare in uno
specifico territorio di 700.000 abitanti e
mille kmq, questa comunità sostenibile
latente e renderla visibile, agli attori
stessi e a un pubblico interessato

Risorsa mineraria o
problematica sociale?
Intervista a Susanna Anderegg

Negli ultimi anni la costante crescita
della domanda di minerali da parte
delle economie emergenti ha determi-
nato un aumento del prezzo dei metalli,
suscitando l’interesse di importanti
compagnie transnazionali che operano
nell’industria mineraria. Il Perù ha fatto
registrare un vero e proprio boom del
settore, facilitato da un regime tributario
e politico favorevole allo sfruttamento
delle risorse naturali, ed è diventato uno
dei più importanti produttori di metalli al
mondo. Purtroppo, come accade sempre
più di frequente, la disponibilità di una
risorsa – utile anche ad altri paesi – può
diventare un problema per l’equilibro del
luogo dove tale risorsa si trova. Inoltre,
nel caso dell’industria mineraria, l’ingen-
te beneficio economico per chi lavora nel
settore può significare anche un ingente
costo sociale e ambientale per gli strati
più poveri della popolazione locale che,
in Perù, si dedica prevalentemente
all’agricoltura e all’allevamento. Oltre
a richiedere enormi quantità di acqua
e terra, con evidenti rischi per l’ecosi-
stema locale, purtroppo alle imprese
minerarie non sono sconosciuti episodi di
violazione dei diritti umani – che spesso
rimangono ignoti a causa delle difficoltà
di comunicazione con le zone remote in
cui accadono. Nelle provincie di Chum-
bivilcas e Cotabambas, che si trovano
rispettivamente nelle regioni di Cusco
e di Apurímac, questo processo è allo
stato embrionale. Sono state erogate
concessioni per le esplorazioni e alcune
imprese transnazionali hanno comincia-
to le operazioni di estrazione in luoghi
dove la popolazione è spesso totalmente
all’oscuro dei rischi ambientali dell’estra-
zione mineraria e del tipo di diritti che
può rivendicare.
La Corporazione Andina per l’Educazio-
ne e Promozione “José Maria Arguedas”
(Cadep Jma) – una ONG con base nella
città di Cusco che opera nel territorio
andino sin dagli anni ’70 per tutelare
i diritti delle popolazioni indigene e
difenderne l’identità – sta affrontando
la problematica. I progetti sviluppati da
Cadep Jma hanno lo scopo di ampliare la
partecipazione delle comunità indigene
e “campesine” alla politica locale. Per
quanto riguarda specificatamente l’am-
bito minerario, Cadep Jma opera nelle
provincie di Chumbivilcas e Cotabambas
per rafforzare le dinamiche politiche di
esercizio dei diritti di cittadinanza perché
le imprese si facciano carico della propria
responsabilità sociale e ambientale; l’in-
noprintnoprintnoprintnoprint
dustria mineraria deve infatti operare nel
rispetto di un percorso di sviluppo della
popolazione che non può prescindere
dall’accesso alle fonti di acqua pulita e
dall’integrità ambientale, soprattutto
se pensiamo che, oltre che nella vita
quotidiana, la madre terra (Pachamama)
ha un ruolo fondamentale nella cultura
locale. Così, per rafforzare le capacità di
vigilanza, di negoziazione e di incidenza
della popolazione rispetto ai progetti
delle imprese minerarie, Cadep Jma
promuove la formazione di comitati di
gestione su base locale che si assicurano
che siano rispettati determinati valori
sociali e ambientali, lancia campagne di
incidenza politica e iniziative di conser-
vazione e miglioramento ambientale
(valutazioni di impatto ambientale, pro-
grammi di riforestazione, ecc.), e genera
consenso nella società civile e nei go-
verni locali sui rischi e gli impatti dell’at-
tività mineraria e sulla necessità di una
propria proposta di sviluppo, non pregiu-
dicata da un’attitudine irresponsabile da
parte dell’impresa. Nella consapevolezza
che l’attività mineraria apre possibilità
di sviluppo per le aree interessate e
per il governo andino, la corporazione
non vuole contrastarle tout court, ma
creare le condizioni affinché la società
civile possa gestire autonomamente le
esternalità che ne emergono, nel pieno e
consapevole esercizio dei propri diritti.

Immensee lavora da tempo nel campo
della cooperazione internazionale nella
regione sudamericana, e in particolare si
occupa da anni proprio delle tematiche
legate allo sfruttamento minerario. Da
quasi tre anni appoggia il Cadep Jma nei
progetti dell’area di minería.
IB: Susanna, in che modo l’attività mine-
raria può rappresentare una minaccia?
SA: L’attività mineraria utilizza molte
volte sostanze chimiche come cianu-
ro e ossidi. Estrarre il minerale grezzo
dalla roccia è un processo complesso,
e il pericolo nell’utilizzo di tali sostan-
ze è che possano finire negli scarichi
o vaporizzarsi nell’aria e ricadere sulla
terra. È risaputo che l’estrazione mine-
raria può contaminare le falde acquifere,
incidendo su agricoltura e allevamento
ma anche sulla potabilità stessa dell’ac-
qua. Quello che è successo in La Oroya
(zona di attività minerarie nella regione
di Huancayo, considerata una tra le
dieci più inquinate del mondo – ndr) è
un esempio concreto. La popolazione è
cosciente di questi pericoli? L’effettivo
livello di informazione non è elevato in
generale, anche se ci sono alcune perso-
ne, come leader o dirigenti, che hanno
partecipato a incontri informativi o a
stage. Ma la maggior parte della popo-
lazione dispone solo di un’informazione
frammentaria e poco approfondita: può
solo intuire da ciò che sente dire che
ci sono conflitti in atto, o che l’attività
mineraria non è solo una cosa buona ma
ha anche risvolti negativi.
IB: Cosa si può fare per responsabilizzare
l’industria mineraria?
SA: Questo è principalmente compito
delle società minerarie stesse: a livel-
lo nazionale e internazionale esistono
ben precise norme di comportamento
per il settore. Queste aziende devono
impegnarsi a svolgere il loro lavoro in
modo responsabile, nel rispetto dei diritti
della popolazione – incluso quello di
non essere ingannata, ma informata in
modo accurato e trasparente – e delle
leggi vigenti, usando le migliori tecno-
logie disponibili (anche se più costose)
per scongiurare al massimo il pericolo
di contaminazione. Per salvaguardare la
popolazione è necessario che si prenda-
no questo impegno. Credo però che la
responsabilità ricada sia sulle imprese e
sui loro dirigenti sia sui governanti locali,
che devono impegnarsi perché siano
rispettate le buone norme e denuncia-
re le eventuali violazioni a discapito
dell’ambiente, della trasparenza verso la
popolazione locale e della sicurezza dei
lavoratori.
IB: Che cosa è già stato fatto concreta-
mente, e che ruolo giocano la comunica-
zione ambientale e la partecipazione in
tutto questo?
SA: Da due anni conduciamo campagne
di informazione, principalmente nella
zona di Cotabambas: abbiamo inizia-
to a informare i giovani della capitale,
Haquira, e l’anno scorso abbiamo esteso
l’azione alle comunità rurali, in modo
che possano orientarsi sui diversi aspetti
relativi alle miniere, sui processi coin-
volti e sulle possibili azioni per incidere
su di essi. Uno degli obiettivi è che la
gente conosca i propri diritti e inizi a
farli valere anche con le società mine-
rarie. Come secondo obiettivo abbiamo
iniziato a formare (e informare) comitati
di gestione ambientale, i cui rappresen-
tanti possono agire a livello distrettuale
acquisendo potere contrattuale. Questi
comitati devono essere in grado di coor-
dinarsi con i comuni, avanzare proposte
concrete per migliorare l’ambiente e, se
necessario, creare consenso e influenza-
re le decisioni a livello locale, regionale,
nazionale e anche internazionale, in caso
di violazione dei diritti umani o gravi im-
patti negativi sull’ambiente. Allo stesso
tempo stiamo sostenendo le comunità
già colpite da danni derivati dall’attività
mineraria, rispondendo alle richieste che
di volta in volta ci vengono sottoposte.
Stiamo coordinando tavoli di discussione
e concertazione a livello locale, che inte-
ragiscono con quelli tematici su ambien-
te e attività mineraria, quelli municipali,
quelli aperti da varie altre organizzazioni,
anche a livello regionale con il tavolo sul-
lo sviluppo e l’attività mineraria di Aban-
cay (capitale della regione di Apurímac
– ndr). Allo stesso tempo abbiamo aperto
contatti soprattutto in Europa, in caso si
prospettasse un’azione a livello interna-
zionale. In ultimo, anche se ancora poco
sviluppato, c’è il lavoro di ricerca: capire
e analizzare quali siano le necessità e
studiare l’attività mineraria in maniera
più approfondita è una base importante
per il lavoro che abbiamo svolto e stiamo
svolgendo.

Ora come non mai il
futuro è Personal
Intervista a Stefano Carabelli

La diffusione della tecnologia, lo svilup-
po di device sempre più sofisticati e la
creazione di prodotti/servizi sempre più
personalizzabili ci danno una visione
di quello che sarà la società del futuro.
Il concetto di personal oggi coinvolge
tutto il campo di attività che ogni giorno
svolgiamo, dai consumatori che co-pro-
gettano insieme alle aziende i prodotti
che useranno, la diffusione del concetto
di community, al “profile myning” (“10
crucial consumer trends for 2010” –
trendwatching.com – NdR), la gestione
della propria immagine e del flusso di
informazioni personali che volenti o no-
lenti disseminiamo durante tutto il corso
della nostra vita. Tale tendenza, se mes-
sa in relazione alle stime delle Nazioni
Unite secondo le quali entro il 2050 i tre
quarti della popolazione mondiale vivrà
nelle aree urbane, fornisce uno scenario
di lavoro a tutti quei soggetti deputati a
ideare, progettare e realizzare prodotti e
servizi che tendono sempre più a ridurre
il divario funzionale tra uomo, macchina
e ambiente (sempre più spesso urba-
no) circostante. Rientrano in questa
categoria i PCV: i Personal Commuting
Vehicles, così battezzati per richiamare
il personal computer degli anni ’80, che
identificano una nuova classe di veicoli.
Come nel caso del PC, che ha rivolu-
zionato il concetto stesso di informa-
tica rendendola accessibile ad un uso
personale e casalingo, un PCV si pone
l’obiettivo di rivoluzionare il traspor-
to urbano e suburbano attraverso un
nuovo modo di concepire la strada e la
mobilità individuale. A maggio prenderà
anche il via il “Progressive Automotive
X Prize”, competizione internazionale
organizzata negli Stati Uniti dalla X Prize
Foundation, con l’obiettivo di ispirare
una nuova generazione di veicoli ad alta
efficienza e basse emissioni, in grado
di offrire ai consumatori un’alternativa
concreta ai mezzi di trasporto privato
attualmente disponibili sul mercato.
Per essere ammessi alla competizio-
ne, i veicoli devono rispettare quattro
criteri fondamentali: essere in grado di
percorrere almeno 43 Km con 1 litro di
benzina, rispettare gli attuali standard
di sicurezza passiva (crash test), essere
autonomamente stabili in ogni condi-
zione di uso (in pratica sono escluse le
motociclette) e, infine, essere proget-
tati per la produzione in serie (almeno
10.000 unità l’anno, ovvero sono esclusi
prototipi troppo “futuristici” che non po-
trebbero essere prodotti a costi accetta-
bili). A contendersi i 10 milioni di dollari
in palio, 43 team selezionati fra oltre 97
candidature, provenienti da 10 paesi del
mondo. Tra questi l’Italiana TTW - Three
Tilting Wheels s.r.l., start-up aziendale
e laboratorio di creatività ingegneristi-
ca, attualmente inserita nell’Incubatore
d’Imprese del Politecnico di Torino, con il
suo TTW One.
AS: Stefano Carabelli, Presidente di TTW
s.r.l., quali sono le peculiarità di un PCV
e in particolare del vostro?
SC: Un Personal Commuting Vehicle è
un veicolo specificatamene pensato
per il trasporto di una/due persone, in
sicurezza e in ambito urbano ma anche
suburbano quindi anche con velocità
tipica di una tangenziale. TTW One si
propone come la naturale evoluzione di
un maxiscooter mantenendone ingom-
bro e prestazioni, ma sempre in condi-
zioni di massima stabilità, grazie alla
terza ruota e al controllo automatico
dell’inclinazione.
AS: Come funziona nello specifico la
propulsione e quanta autonomia ha?
SC: TTW One è dotato di una propulsio-
ne ibrida elettrica che combina un mo-
tore a combustione con cambio a tra-
smissione continua connesso alla ruota
posteriore, con due motori elettrici posti
direttamente nelle ruote anteriori. In
tal modo, oltre ai vantaggi in termini di
consumi ed emissioni di CO2, si ottiene
una trazione integrale. Da non sotto-
valutare la possibilità di utilizzare, per
tragitti brevi (tipici nelle aree urbane),
la trazione puramente elettrica, quindi
a zero emissioni, con una autonomia di
circa 25 chilometri.
AS: La sicurezza è uno dei problemi che
affliggono i veicoli alternativi nel traffico
urbano, come avete affrontato questa
problematica?
SC: La sicurezza non è uno dei problemi,
ma il problema di tutti i veicoli a due
ruote. Purtroppo le statistiche sono chia-
rissime: utilizzare un motociclo in am-
biente urbano è pericoloso perchè ogni
incidente è potenzialmente dannoso per
l’occupante, prima ancora che per il vei-
colo. TTW One è dotato di una cellula di
sicurezza che avvolge completamente
guidatore e passeggero assicurando loro
una protezione al livello di una normale
automobile e, al contempo, proteggen-
doli dal... maltempo!
Ma l’Italia non è sola ad affrontare
questa sfida, che mira a rivoluzionare
in maniera radicale il trasporto all’in-
terno delle aree urbane: anche Francia
con Peugeot “HYbrid3 compressor e
Lumeneo”, Germania con “Mini E”, Gran
Bretagna con “Riversimplee” e Stati
Uniti con Tesla Motors “Roadster e Persu
hybrid”, stanno sviluppano progetti
analoghi.

Please think FSC
before you print

eart magazine supports a no-print ap-
proach and, when actual paper and ink
are absolutely necessary, its designers
have thought of a few interesting ways
the impact of printing can be reduced.
However, some decisions are left up to
you, our readers: if you must print, use
the blank side of a used sheet of paper.
Or use certified paper. Or recycled pa-
per. Better yet, use the blank side of a
used sheet of recycled, certified paper.
One of the organizations promoting
sustainably-sourced timber and control-
ling the certification of timber and its
derivatives, such as paper, is the Forest
Stewardship Council, also known by the
acronym FSC and by its logo.
MN: The FSC was founded in 1993 and
now boasts over 110 million hectares
of certified forests in 82 different coun-
tries. How did the organization get peo-
ple to recognize and align themselves
with its standards at first?
AK: FSC evolved from the UN Confer-
ence on Sustainable Development in
1992 and was from the onset com-
prised of a diverse group brought to-
gether by the common goal to improve
forest management worldwide.
It is important to note that FSC is vol-
untary and that the businesses, organi-
zations and individuals supporting FSC
are driven by a variety or combination
of different interests ranging from so-
cial wellbeing to environmental con-
cerns to making responsible business
decisions.
The governance structure of FSC is
balanced between environmental,
social and economic interests. This
is a unique, multi-stakeholder set-
ting, which gives equal voice to these
diverse perspectives. This encourages
participation and decision making
through consensus. It is a significant
aspect of why FSC is recognized as
the most credible forest certification
scheme, and why businesses, organiza-
tions and governments use FSC as a
tool in reaching their respective goals.
MN: Central and Northern Africa, as
well as the Middle East, however, are
still off the FSC map. Do you have a
communication strategy to approach
businesses and institutions in these
countries?
AK: In 2007, FSC launched its five-year
Global Strategy to define the organiza-
tion’s priorities. Within its five main
goals, FSC has further articulated
specific focus areas and among these
is the objective to improve application
of FSC standards in managed forest op-
erations in the tropics (Goal 2b – Global
Strategy www.fsc.org/global_strategy.
html).
Two current projects support this goal:
GEF project for improved certification
systems for sustainable tropical forest
management; and PPP-NI project for
strengthening FSC National Initiatives
to improve tropical forest management.

Additionally, FSC Global Development
is FSC’s market focused business unit
charged with brand management and
trademark promotion worldwide. While
strengthening FSC at the forest level
has strong efforts in the tropics, FSC
also has strategies in various regions to
strengthen the FSC system on the mar-
ket side, drive demand for responsibly
sourced products and increase aware-
ness of FSC.
MN: There’s a video documentary on
www.fsc.ord showing that, in 1999,
American buyers shopping at Home De-
pot hardly knew what ‘certified’ meant,
while interviewees in The Netherlands
(where 49% knew what FSC stands for)
mention they’ve read and seen adver-
tisements about the FSC. According to
your experience, is there a cultural ele-
ment that makes people more or less
sensitive about environmental issues in
different countries, or are different lev-
els of awareness a matter of available
information and communication?
AK: Environmental awareness var-
ies from country to country for many
reasons – population size, government
structure and policies, and location
are all affecting factors. These same
variables affect awareness of FSC. For
this reason, FSC has over 50 National
Initiatives around the world, which help
promote responsible forest manage-
ment in a way that is relevant to the
local population. These focused or-
ganizations support FSC’s mission and
vision, and are integral to FSC’s work.

MN: It is obviously crucial for the FSC
that its trademark is used properly, as
it communicates at a glance all that
the organization stands for. But do you
think this highly visual logo might also
have contributed to the success of the
FSC certification compared to other
international certification systems,
e.g. making it easier to remember and
recognize?
AK: FSC’s logo is unique and memora-
ble. It is a protected trademark, and
FSC has a strong program focused on
Trademark Services – both for promo-
tion and protection. More important
though is what the logo stands for: the
highest social and environmental forest
certification standards and the most
credible international forest certifica-
tion scheme. The logo is backed by the
integrity of the FSC standards, the FSC
Accreditation Program, and the global
community of FSC Members.
MN: “Please think FSC before you print”
is a smart e-mail closing.
AK: Thank you. The e-mail closing is a
reminder that FSC is a good choice, a
responsible choice. Recycled paper is
also a good choice, and FSC standards
include a ‘recycled’ product label, so
the closing can also refer to recycled
paper products. The demand for paper
globally is immense, and expected to
continue to grow. FSC does not encour-
age forests to be explored, but rather
promotes the equitable incorporation
of social and environmental considera-
tions when this does happen. In this,
FSC is not an alternative to conserva-
tion but a contributing factor in push-
ing the global dialogue on responsible
forest management and providing a
forum where internationally applicable
solutions may be created.
The message is that if we continue to
put demand on resources, we need to
do so in a responsible manner and FSC
is a key tool in making this happen.

Sustainability 2.0
Interview with John Grant

After the success of The New Market-
ing Manifesto, named one of the ten
best business books of 1999 by Ama-
zon.com, and The Green Marketing
Manifesto, which won the 2008 British
Book (Design & Production) Award in
the environmental category (and was
finally translated in Italian by Brioschi
last year), John Grant is back with a new
book published by Wiley, called Co-
opportunity. Though busy with a number
of projects (including his prolific blogs,
greenormal.blogspot.com and www.
coopp.net), he found a moment to tell
us more about himself and the ideas
he works with – and was more outgo-
ing and generous with his time than
we could hope. But then again, this is
someone who’s come up with his very
own smiley emoticon-signature.
MN: Can you tell us why you became in-
terested in social awareness and green
issues in the first place?
JG: Professionally there have been
various stages. At St Luke’s in the mid
1990s we were working with this stuff
ourselves and also trying to figure out
what it meant for clients. Around 2001
I joined a Forum for the Future group
looking at marketing and sustainability.
In 2002 I started a sustainability spon-
sored content company (that never
really took off), then in 2004 I tried to
launch an eco label called “not bad”
(ditto) and so on. Now I’ve written sev-
eral books on the subject and tend to
get a fair bit of consulting work in this
space; although sometimes it’s just as
valuable to do a project which teaches
you some new strategy or application
(for instance in social media) that you
can reapply to a good cause. At the
moment I’m in the middle of launching
a joint consultancy called Abundancy
with two people (Jules Peck and Tamara
Giltsoff) who know more about sustain-
ability than I do; I’ve also have been
working for the last 2 years on yet an-
other green start-up, called Ecoinomy.
Personally I had a childhood fascination
(as many do) with trees, ants, caterpil-
lars and so on. My version of the ‘fire-
man’ type early vocation is that I want-
ed to be a forestry commissioner. In my
idealistic teen and young adult phase it
was much more about poverty, justice,
human rights though – plus a sort of
yoga/vegetarian/pacifist/hippy thing.
My main interest today is how to think
about building a better kind of society,
how we can make that shift. I see that
as a primary task, and the environmen-
tal and social impacts as more like side
effects. I guess it is my life stage again
(Erik Erikson said that in middle age we
ideally get into generativity; the ques-
tions of our collective legacy and what
is best ‘for the good of the species’).
MN: When you announced the www.
coopp.net blog on Greenormal, you said
you’d keep green marketing and inno-
vation separate from social innovation:
“It’s a fuzzy line and when in doubt I will
cross post.” Can you give us examples
of how fuzzy that line is?
JG: Pepsi Refresh, which I decided to put
on the Coopp blog, is actually a market-
ing campaign (that happens to apply
crowdsourcing and a consumer engage-
ment platform to funding charities). It’s
cause related marketing rather than
sustainability per se, but it’s certainly
somewhere on that line. Also I’ve been
surprised in the last few months how
agency strategists and marketers have
seemed to switch on to the collabora-
tive ecosystem sort of approach – for
instance how many want me to come in
and chat about it. I had expected that
this would be the book which they might
skip, since it’s more obviously targeted
at social ventures and community in-
novation. But actually there has been
a lot of initial interest from the ‘green
marketing’ (to put it in broad terms)
community too. And even the ‘non
green’ sort. Maybe for them it is actually
a trend book? And there has been a big
mood swing in the last year away from
image towards the rooted; in anything
from growing your own vegetables, to
knowing where your eggs come from, to
the new folk culture and ‘frucool’ (as Ed
from Futerra calls it).
MN: What will readers find in Co-oppor-
tunity that was missing in The Green
Marketing Manifesto? What has changed
in the 3 years between books?
JG: The book grows out of a section in
green marketing manifesto that started
to look at new social and business
models, for instance around sharing,
leasing, clubbing together and so on.
But they are very different books. The
Green Marketing Manifesto was an at-
tempt to clarify and classify worthwhile
approaches in an era where greenwash
was a real worry and threat. Co-oppor-
tunity is a sourcebook for social innova-
tors, people with the beginnings of an
idea for a social venture, with a new
policy job, a cause or campaign. It cov-
ers different sorts of examples some of
which are green (e.g. Transition Towns,
or the Walmart Index) and some which
aren’t (e.g. MyObama or M2M). They are
both sustainability and innovation books
I suppose. The other thing is that I do
think there has been a swing towards
more visionary solutions, and towards
collective citizen approaches rather
than individuals as consumers (10 little
things you can buy to make a differ-
ence). What my publisher says to sum
it up in a snappy way is that Co-oppor-
tunity is “Sustainability 2.0” and there
is certainly quite a lot of social network
and digital stuff in there too.
MN: What do you think about Wired Ita-
lia’s Internet for Peace campaign? Has
the web contributed to environmental
and social communication in a truly in-
novative and significant way?
JG: It’s certainly an interesting and
sparky campaign – I will have to blog
about it in due course. I’m uncertain
whether the high profile role that the
Internet has played in recent political
events quite qualifies it yet for a peace
prize... I’m not sure #iranelections was
the equivalent of a Mandela or a Tian-
neman Square. The web has given
us wonderful tools to connect with
other human beings. For instance last
summer, as part of an insect, art and
ecology festival (Pestival) a group of us
created a role play of a bee colony on
Twitter – complete with a pollen treas-
ure hunt on other websites (you had
to find several hundred hidden flowers
and point them out to other bees), and
also a complete training/briefing on the
23 roles you could take in a bee colony
and pointers to how you would interact
with others. It’s also given us wonderful
ways to coordinate and organise, from
Meetups, Flashmobs, hack days and so
on – to a full crowdfunding and P2P can-
vassing system in the Obama election
campaign. It’s also an essential bush
telegraph through our own little blog,
Twitter and other circuits, allows for big
information streams from Treehugger or
World Changing, and on top of all this is
a platform for campaigns like those from
Avaaz or Virgance.
MN: Which is the most effective media
for environmental and social communi-
cation?
JG: Conversation. Person to person,
and face to face. Things spread like
wildfire long before the Internet, and
they did so (religious ideas, political
ideas, gossip and rumours) because
they were urgent, important and the
people who relayed them had a mas-
sive personal stake. Many of the things
I’ve been exploring around climate
change for instance are asking how we
can enable more of these face-to-face,
advocacy and educational interactions.
On a broader level, we are incubating
a completely different way of organis-
ing human societies, and that’s going
to require lots of cells of rich human
interaction. The network is great at join-
ing those cells up but it is when we talk,
think and feel together that we start to
change. That’s my experience anyway.

Time in jazz: an idea,
a dream, a happy ending
Interview with Paolo Fresu

Take a small town in Gallura, one of its
native’s enthusiasm, his skill at playing
jazz on the trumpet, and an idea turn-
ing into a success, applauded both by
public and critics. You have all the ingre-
dients for a good story, with a guaran-
teed happy ending: Time in Jazz, the
international festival held in Berchidda
(OT), has been one of the main summer
attractions in Sardinia for over twenty
years, and Paolo Fresu, its creator and
artistic director, has become one of the
best jazz players of our time.
The story of Time in Jazz cannot be told
without mentioning the environment
where it’s held. There’s a strong bond
between people and places, condition-
ing and influencing each other, and
this is especially true for Berchidda,
because of its special position and the
territory surrounding it: on top of a hill,
with a view on rocks that turn every
shade of red at sunset. Flocks of sheep
dot the countryside meadows, green
after winter rain and okra after days
of summer sun. Then, along the tortu-
ous roads, tree trunks bleeding, bare
after their cork bark has been taken.
This is where, every August, musicians
and artists from the whole world meet
and give life to amazing shows. This is
where the festival’s heart beats, where
the association bearing its name was
born to take care of its organization.
The event’s purpose is to give visibility
to talented and skilled musicians and
artists who are not widely recognized in
Italy. But the festival, growing famous
and popular, has also contributed to the
local economy by promoting this ter-
ritory both in Italy and abroad. It’s not
just a “touristy” moment to highlight
during its peak in August: the positive
outcome for the territory means a whole
year of activities, as the festival is a fac-
tory of ideas and knowledge, involving
over 200 volunteers between 14 and 60
years of age – an extraordinary group
that has the chance to escape the mar-
ginality and immobility that is typical of
similar areas, in Sardinia and beyond.
In order to better understand the spirit
animating the festival and everything
around it, we asked a few questions to
its creator Paolo Fresu, who found the
time for an interview with us while on a
world tour.
IT: How did you get the idea of a jazz
festival?
PF: That’s a good question. I wanted to
do something important. For myself,
for the place where I was born and
raised, for music and jazz. Time in Jazz
started in the mid-Eighties: my profes-
sional career had just started and I was
inspired by some of the new festivals
in Sardinia where I was being invited at
the time. One of them was the one in
Cagliari, and another was in Sant’Anna
Arresi, a very small town in Sulcidano: it
seemed very similar to Berchidda. The
difference was that Sant’Anna Arresi
was on the seaside, and thus attracted
many tourists, while Berchidda is in the
hinterland. My challenge was to bring a
large public to the hinterland of Sar-
dinia, defying the concept of territory
and touristic and cultural movement.
At the time, the only territories that
people tried to promote were on the
coast, like the Costa Smeralda. Aware
of this, we developed the Time in Jazz
program focusing on original projects
that you couldn’t find anywhere else, so
people were “forced” to come to Ber-
chidda. Later we strengthened our bond
with the territory, the local culture, the
environment. All in all, Time in Jazz was
never meant to be a top-down event,
imposed from the powers that be, but
a flywheel for development, tying art
and territory together and researching
the meaning of a cultural “container”
that could change a community’s and a
whole territory’s path. Examples are the
Visual Arts Project PAV, and Semida -
Open Air Museum of Mount Limbara.
IT: The festival can surely be consid-
ered a positive element for the local
economy, and a chance for the younger
generation for cultural exchanges and
growth. Are you ever afraid that the
festival might make Berchidda lose its
particular identity?
PF: That’s certainly a risk, but we try
to be very careful. We like the idea of
a successful festival that is now fol-
lowed by tens of thousands of people,
but which tries to maintain the size of
a family or town event. We are aware
of the fact that this might well be the
key to the success of an event that is
renown internationally, but can dialogue
with its place of origin. And this has
always been our challenge: to disman-
tle the old concept of geographical and
cultural centrality. For its particular fea-
tures, Berchidda can become the center
of the world for ten days, and Time in
Jazz can be the starting point for ideas
and inputs to spread outside.
IT: Despite the event’s success, have
you ever had any problems, perhaps
with the older generation of the town
who didn’t want any changes, or with
the institutions?
PF: The problems with institutions are
always the same. It’s too long and com-
plicated to talk about it, and try to solve
it, here. Also because it’s a problem that
involves the whole country’s philosophy
about cultural production. Sardinia, as
a special statute region, is better off
than others, but the problems of cul-
ture in Italy resonate on everything and
everyone. To sum up, you cannot plan
to far into the future and, moreover,
finding funds is difficult because there
are always fewer resources. This situ-
ation certainly doesn’t reward cultural
associations, like ours, which take on
risks on their own. Our relationship with
the town and its community, instead,
has changed a lot. In the first few years,
many people saw the festival as some-
thing useless and unnecessary, which
could only bring trouble; but today
everyone agrees that it’s important not
only for music (not everyone loves or
understands jazz) but also to give new
life to the town, projecting a positive
image of Berchidda, its territory and
region; last but not least, everyone can
now see that Time in Jazz has created
linked businesses on the territory that
are worth more than 1.5 million euros.
And the festival is able to attract a large
number of volunteers in its organization,
making it an event that every family
now feels a part of and looks forward to.
IT: Time in Jazz was born as a jazz festi-
val but has grown, not only in popularity
but also in the creation of other cul-
tural suggestions: why do you think it’s
necessary to open up to other artistic
expressions?
PF: Because this is my idea of art, and
because it would be pointless to organ-
ize such a big event if all you are doing
is planning a few concerts, whether
they are successful or not. The world
‘festival’ also contains the Italian ‘festa’,
party, and means you need to involve
everyone in something in which music
and art are the main focus, but not the
only one. It’s the only way to leave a
strong mark on the territory, allowing
everyone to grow. Because a festival
can be an extraordinary instrument of
growth. This is the concept that can
unhinge the common idea that culture is
ephemeral and non necessary...
IT: What would you like for the future of
the festival, the Time in Jazz association
and Berchidda?
PF: A more stable reality where we
might work in peace, without having to
constantly try to convince everyone that
what we do has plenty good reasons to
be done.

The environment as a
theatrical place
Interview with Gennadi N. Bogdanov

Between the XVII and XIX century, the
theatre, as physical space where people
of every social background could inter-
act and liaise, considered entertainment
a mere accessory. The public, without
chairs, and the stage, considered small
“pied-à-terre” for business meetings
and secluded rendezvous, helped create
a “different” world, a place without sun-
light where men, protagonist and viewer
at the same time, could distance them-
selves becoming “someone else”. In the
second half of the XIX century things
changed, and the theater turned from a
place of physical escape from the world
to a temple of mental escape. Entertain-
ment became the center of gravity, and
reaching maturity it tackled increas-
ingly structured shows. Chairs appeared
and the audience suddenly went silent.
The nature of the place didn’t change
despite its new functions: a “different”
place, separate from the world. Thus,
the artist became the only true protago-
nist of the theater, and this new role can
only lead to new demands. Structured
theatrical methods and systems are
created in response, to educate and or-
ganize the artist’s work in relation to the
perceptive and spatial environment and
its limits. Mejerchol’d’s Theater Biome-
chanics is a striking example of theater
art’s need for clear pedagogic rules.
CMP: Master Bogdanov, how did you
start working with Mejerchol’d’s Theater
Biomechanics?
GNB: I was an acting student and,
after a strict selection, I was admit-
ted at GITIS, Moscow’s State Academy.
Five very hard years there taught me
how to work in the theater as a profes-
sional. I studied with the best masters
in the Soviet Union, some of which were
Stanislavsky’s actors. I was trained in
acting and many other skills (classic
ballet, fencing, acrobatics, neutral mask
acting), which allowed me to improve
my expressive abilities. At 23, I was
hired to act in Moscow’s Satire Theater’s
repertory company, directed by Valen-
tin Plucek, where actors have to dance
and sing as well as act. I thought I had
learned everything at the academy, but
I was wrong. School is only the begin-
ning, a solid foundation from which
one’s own artistic process can start. As
soon as I was hired, the theater’s direc-
tor invited me and other young actors to
attend lessons with his former master,
Nikolaj Kustov, who was an actor and
teacher of Mejerchol’d’s Theater Biome-
chanics in the 1930s.
CMP: Why did you focus on this educa-
tion system?
GNB: My main problem was the rela-
tion between the ideas in the charac-
ter, movement and scenic space, the
environment in which the character
lives and develops his or her story. It
was a common problem I shared with
older actors, with whom I worked every
day, who tried to find an answer in their
experience and instinct. Instead, Master
Kustov had a completely new approach
for my colleagues and me because he
always tried to find a direct solution,
without any useless metaphysical ambi-
tions. Hence I was able to experience a
different vision of art: a 3D perspective
that starts from reality and awareness
of the surrounding space to reach full
knowledge and awareness of one’s own
expressive instruments. Thanks to the
principles that make up the complex
educational system of Mejerchol’d’s
Theater Biomechanics, I was able to
improve more and more: I was able to
work on my limits, structure my artistic
work on solid and stable foundations. It
was a compass that allowed me to know
where I was going during my 15 years
on stage.
CMP: What are the principles of this
system exactly?
GNB: The first goal is to have a 3D
perception of one’s own body, in space,
and to observe one’s position from the
outside. The second step is to consider
the relation with surrounding objects
or points of reference, evaluating their
movements. A long journey towards
awareness, which required years of
physical work and exercises but led me
to optimize my concentration, making
all my actions real, targeted at some-
thing, and not the result of uncontrolled
emotional states. Understanding that
space has a rhythm and that one’s own
actions have to fall in step with it to
create a precise harmony is another
step of this long journey. A chair is not
only something to sit on, just like a table
is not only something where you can
place an object. They are spaces that
the actor must understand, get to know
and exploit to express the character’s
mood; they have to become part of the
metaphor of the actor’s actions; the
theatrical space must become metaphor
itself. Therefore, every object is a space
too, which in the hands of the aware
actor gains a specific role and tells a
part of the story. However, this degree
of awareness is still not sufficient: the
actor, on stage, creates his or her own
space and modifies it constantly by
moving, not in a generic way but with
a clear, precise idea and a practical
goal that can “modify air” and give the
whole environment a new life.
CMP: What do you mean by “modify air”?
GNB: I know this expression can seem
a little abstract. But every thing that
surrounds the actor is space, and con-
tributes to create the metaphor that is
typical of art. The actor is work of art,
as the volume of his or her body par-
ticipates materially in the creation of
space, and creator at the same time,
always thinking about his or her actions,
which give shape to his or her thoughts.
In this sense, through awareness of his
or her work, the actor is able to modify
the environment triggering the viewers’
emotion. In my life, I’ve seen only a few
actors who are able to “modify air”, and
I am sure no system can teach how to
do it – no matter how well tested it is or
how well researched are its foundations.
Studying for years Mejerchol’d’s Theater
Biomechanics with Master Kustov, I real-
ized this and was able to set clear goals
for myself, in work and life.
CMP: How has your relationship with
this technique changed after all these
years, now that you have also gained
considerable experience?
GNB: My work has evolved: I have
become a director and a teacher most
importantly. The moral legacy that my
master has left me allowed me to start
a further journey of knowledge, which is
always concrete but absolutely differ-
ent from everyday life. My view of the
surrounding reality has changed. Master
Kustov often repeated that an actor’s
eyes see more than a normal person’s,
and that the actor is a kind of “superhe-
ro” because he can perceive and think
many things at the same time, while
always maintaining absolute awareness.
CMP: This is certainly a difficult process.
Is it really doable?
GNB: This way of approaching life cost
me a huge effort in the beginning,
when I was still an actor at Moscow’s
Satire Theater; but everything gradu-
ally became natural, and turned into an
intimate and quick mental process in
little time.
CMP: How difficult is it to transmit this
awareness to your students?
GNB: For me teaching is, first of
all, a double responsibility: towards
Mejerchol’d’s Theater Biomechanics,
which my Master taught me and which
I teach and will teach to my students,
because I don’t want to distort it but
respect its tradition; and towards the
students, whom I want to give a set of
knowledge and tools they can use for
their stage work. I realize that the job
I’ve been given is very hard and that I
could not make it if I didn’t always work
in a completely open way towards oth-
ers. This is the best way to get to know,
better and better every day, the envi-
ronment we relate to.
CMP: What are your next goals?
GNB: In Perugia, I continue to teach and
direct at CISBiT, the International Center
for Theatre Biomechanics Studies. Next
April I will direct my 13th work ses-
sion in seven years. It’s very important
to have a structure to refer to, which
not only organizes classes but also
produces shows. In November 2009 I
directed Moliere’s “George Dandin, or
The Confounded Husband” at Milan’s
CRT with eight actors, all from CISBiT. It
is definitely a great satisfaction to see
the birth of a new work group with a
common language, and I am very proud
of their work.

Masi Manimba,
university of life

In the beginning of 2009, the Piedmon-
tese chapter of ISF (Informatici Senza
Frontiere, i.e. Computer Scientists with-
out Borders) was contacted by Antonio
Campanaro, of the Italian Hospitals in
the World Alliance. He was looking for
people or organizations that could help
him create a computer room – with
computers, projector, and Internet con-
nection – in a university building in Msi
Manimba, in the Democratic Republic
of the Congo. The requirements were:
electric autonomy (to be achieved with
solar panels), high reliability of the
system (considering the little techni-
cal assistance available), low cost (or,
better yet, as-low-as-possible cost) and
good personalization options. That’s
where we came in. Antonio already had
gained a lot of experience in installing
satellite communication systems and
solar panels to power them, so what he
was asking ISF was mainly the plan-
ning and installing of the informatics
part. We started preparing a number
of second-hand computers, installing
opensource operating systems (Linux
or, better yet, Ubuntu Linux) and all the
software a school could need (browser,
Skype, Openoffice, etc.)... in French of
course, the official language in DROC,
which was a Belgian colony. In the end
of July 2009, we loaded our odd bags on
a plane from Turin to Kinshasa, and then
continued our journey by on the road to
Masi Manimba.
Here is an e-mail that Marco wrote to
his friends in Italy, that August, during
a night in Masi Manimba, after many at-
tempts at making everything work:
“We’ve finally made it. Dear all who
are reading. You cannot imagine the
joy it is to write you this e-mail through
the satellite dish we installed here in
Masi-Manimba in Congo. A place in the
middle of the jungle, with the closest
city that is worth that name is 45 Km
away on dirt tracks, and the capital
is 400 Km away. There’s nothing, all
around. The closest Internet point has
not been working since February, and
after 3 days to reach this place, a pole
to support the dish we “invented” à la
McGyver, a burnt-out router because
of how irregular the tension is coming
from the generator, and a few dead
inverters, connection always unstable
and inexistent or obsolete tools... well,
after so much bad luck, on all sides...
In the end here I am, writing you from
our now wonderful satellite connec-
tion! I can’t describe the satisfaction
this operation is giving us, with its highs
and lows, joys and disappointments. Up
until 2 hours ago, we were completely
cut out from the world. And now these
people can have Internet, and remote
medical assistance, communication,
information, long-distance university
lessons, and much more. Anyone should
try this experience to realize how so
many things that we give for granted in
Italy are pure and simple magic here.
When we finally got the satellite’s signal
(after only 12 hours of trying!) and saw
the “green light” on the computer’s
monitor, we felt as if we’d found water
150 meters under ground. You can’t
imagine the celebration and joy. In Italy,
this would all have been obvious, but I
assure you that here... it’s an unprece-
dented success, planting the seed for a
real growth of this place. You don’t real-
ize what this dish means until you send
the first e-mail, with your heart beating
and the awareness that you’ve done
something to help thousands of people.
Now we have to start thinking about
finding further resources (funding, time,
raw materials) for this place, so that is
may become a center of excellence in
Congo – with infrastructures, comput-
ers, long-distance skills that can be
useful... Well, what can I say, MBOTE!
(greetings in the local dialect).”
We returned home with new eyes and a
new heart, full of hope, and enriched by
all we had seen, by all the differences
and by a new awareness. How time
passed, the local traditions, points of
view, the concept of living and life itself,
the small, huge everyday practice:
electricity, running water, lighting at
night, everything we think is automatic
and give for granted here, simply didn’t
exist there. Everything is the same, and
yet completely different. Sitting in the
darkness at night, when we’d finally
connected to Internet, we celebrated
with lots of great Congolese beer and
talked (actually was Marco speaking: his
French is French , mine and Felice defi-
nitely not), in the best French we could
handle, with the team of local electri-
cians who helped us set up the solar
panels and communication station. We
talked about them and their life, about
us and ours, and about the fact that we
had been able to make the trip from Eu-
rope with about 1,000 euros (that’s how
much a two-way flight from Torino to
Kinshasa and back, via Brussels, cost),
and about the fact that those 1,000
euros, for them, would be like 60,000
for us – they would never be able to
visit Europe. And water. Water, running
freely as soon as you open the faucet.
There, you open the faucet (when there
is one) and often, almost always, noth-
ing comes out. One morning in Kikwit
(where we stopped on our way back to
Kinshasa) I was about to wash myself
as usual, my eyes swollen and my hair
ruffled. There was a sink. I opened the
faucet. Nothing. Close. Open. Nothing. I
looked around, still sleepy, and caught
sight of a bucket full of water. There was
my faucet. Found it! I think I used half
a bucket, more or less four liters, that
hot African morning. Just to barely wash
my hands. Perhaps with a little practice
I would have learned to use half of that,
or maybe I would have been able to
come down to half a liter, in order not
to have to go back to the closest well
or river too often – kilometers far away
– to fill the bucket back up. Perhaps I
would have improved, but that morn-
ing four liters of water were gone. Half
a bucket to wash my hands. Two liters
for each hand... how much water do we
use every day? And what is the right
amount? How much water does a man
need to wash himself? How much to
survive? How much for a child? That’s
how the human mind is, it thinks about
every possible way it can interpret the
world, and then you find yourself ask-
ing yourself questions that you’d only
heard about while playing Trivial Pursuit.
Living in abundance is counter-educa-
tional. At least now we are aware of
that, with every shower and every dive
in a swimming pool, every shampoo and
every pasta, and every time we look at
the sunset, knowing that on the other
side of the sea the seeds we planted are
giving their fruits. Waiting for new eyes,
new hearts and new water, to quench
the thirst of a land that is thirsty for life.
It’s time to unpack, to take out the sou-
venirs that Masi Manimba left us. Under-
standing, learning, improving, and even
living a little more responsibly. With
more awareness and respect, brought
home like the most precious souvenir.

LOCAL SOLUTIONS FOR
CHANGE
Interview with Karl-Ludwig Schibel

Small urban areas, as systems with a
specific identity, set themselves apart
both from other systems and from
the outside environment, in terms of
intrinsic socio-cultural and environmen-
tal aspects: it’s what they call urban
milieu in literature. The development of
local experiences and policies that favor
environmental sustainability proves
that these areas, where 50% of the
European population lives, can become
true models of development not only for
similar situations, but also for the entire
system. Climate Alliance, an associa-
tion gathering 1,500 municipalities and
territorial entities in Europe, is a testi-
mony to this. Its members produce and
implement a wide range of measures to
fight climatic change, especially in the
energy and transportation sectors, and
contribute to the conservation of rain-
forests with awareness campaigns and
by boycotting tropical wood, in partner-
ship with indigenous rainforest peoples.
“Local solutions for change” is the title
of the upcoming International Confer-
ence promoted by Climate Alliance in
Perugia, from April 14-16 2010, in coop-
eration with Regione Umbria, Provincia
di Perugia and Comune di Perugia. An
occasion to dialogue and spark new
ideas, proving that the future of the
fight against climate change is local.
AS: Karl-Ludwig Schibel, member of the
Climate Alliance board and Coordinator
for Italy, what is the role of local com-
munities, and of their administrations,
in the fight against climate change?
KS: Local entities have a key role to
safeguard the climate because they are
in charge of important activities con-
nected to CO2 emissions. Think about
mobility, energy – its production from
local renewable resources, in particu-
lar – as well as energy efficiency, waste
management, urban planning and obvi-
ously the entity’s activities itself: where
does it get its electricity, what vehicles
it uses, how it manages its own build-
ings and purchases of products and
services (green purchases). On top of
the activities that are their responsibil-
ity, local entities have an important role
in enforcing rules, decrees, regulations
and laws passed by the national govern-
ment, often in compliance with Euro-
pean directives. They can, for example,
support the production of renewable
energy through the building code, pro-
mote energy efficiency in existing and
new buildings, take measures to reduce
individual motor traffic, increase citi-
zens’ awareness about climate issues.
They have an important role in stimulat-
ing the economy towards public-private
cooperation (Il “Sole in Comune”, a
voluntary agreement between banks,
suppliers, installers and technicians to
promote photovoltaic energy), certifica-
tion and education programs (Ecoprofit).
AS: So being an active player is at the
base of Climate Alliance?
KS: The members of the Climate Al-
liance commit to boycotting tropical
woods (to preserve rainforests), elimi-
nate the use of CFCs (not as much of a
problem these days, luckily) and reduce
greenhouse gas emission in their ter-
ritory, by 10% every five years. These
are voluntary, unilateral agreements,
but municipalities making this effort
are convinced that independence from
fossil fuels is not only the solution to a
global problem, but a way to guaran-
tee sustainable development to their
territory, to improve the quality of the
environment and of their lives, making
the environment healthier and strength-
ening the economic structure by making
it more resilient to climatic change.
AS: During the next International Con-
ference in Perugia, Climate Alliance will
celebrate its 20th anniversary: is it time
for a balance?
KS: In the past two decades, Climate Al-
liance has developed a catalog of meas-
ures that its members can use to pin-
point the ones that are most useful to
their territory, their resources and their
political will (Climate compass, a tool
that was created with European fund-
ing in the past 15 years). We suggest
starting with one’s own home, moving
on later to the energetic performance of
public administration buildings, schools,
cemeteries, stadiums, and the entity’s
vehicles, goods and services purchased,
etc. Then you can extend your action to
the territory, to improve public trans-
portation (Provincia di Roma), bikabil-
ity and walkability, while making cars
less attractive. Ferrara has followed a
coherent program for almost twenty
years. Favoring solar power (Bolzano),
awareness campaigns in schools, like
our “Green miles” (Reggio Emilia, Fer-
rara, Piacenza, Modena just to mention
a few), green industrial neighborhoods
(ZIPA verde, Jesi). The best municipali-
ties, like Hannover and Freiburg in Ger-
many, The Hague in The Netherlands,
Bolzano, Ferrara, Reggio Emilia and the
Roma province in Italy have developed
their own climate strategy. That means
they have not only gathered in a single
program the various initiatives regard-
ing the climate, but also created a plan
to monitor results. In 2009, we worked
with a pilot group of 6 municipalities
(Bolzano, Genova, Jesi, Modena, Reggio
Emilia, Schio), two Provinces (Ancona
and Roma) and one Region (Emilia-
Romagna) on a software program called
ECORegion to elaborate CO2 balance
sheets on a local and territorial level.
AS: What results have you achieved
until now?
KS: The results we’ve published for
the German and Austrian municipali-
ties prove that, for example, Hannover
was able to reduce its greenhouse gas
emissions by 11.5% compared to 1990.
That is below the Climate Alliance goals,
but we must note that if the situation
doesn’t change on the national and
European level, municipalities cannot
and will not be able to do their part. In
this context, the Covenant of Mayors is
very encouraging: with this initiative, for
the first time, the European Commission
recognized the crucial role of local enti-
ties, asking them to help in achieving its
20/20/20 goals by 2020 (-20% green-
house gasses, +20% energetic effi-
ciency, +20% renewables). In Italy, nine
local and territorial entities belonging to
the ECORegion pilot group are working
on their CO2 balance sheets, and the
Rome Province has presented its first re-
sults at COP 15 in Copenhagen, last De-
cember. Bolzano has decided to become
carbon neutral by 2015 and has recently
presented its plan to achieve this.
AS: Urban Sprawl and “right measure”
were the main themes of the last edition
of the “Fiera delle Utopie Concrete” (Fair
of practical utopias), which you have
coordinated since 1988. Can you tell us
anything about the program and themes
for the next edition?
KS: The 2010 “Fiera delle Utopie Con-
crete”, to be held on October 7-10 in
Città di Castello (Umbria - Italy), will
focus on sustainability of the Altotevere
area (the Northern part of Umbria, on
the left bank of the Tiber), presenting
the assets, resources, and solutions
currently available there for citizens,
institutions, and companies who want
to make their activities and consump-
tion compatible with the environment.
Diverse industries will present their
products and services to aid a concrete
transition towards a sustainable future.
How can we set sustainable products
and services from the rest? A first cri-
terion is whether their production and
consumption lowers greenhouse gas
emissions or not. In Altotevere there are
such products and services, with a low
impact during both the production and
consumption phases, which strengthen
the local economy. It’s a community,
although it is still not perceived as such,
that includes all farmers who use organ-
ic methods, carpenters making highly
insulating doors and windows, technical
experts approving bike paths for their
municipality, stores offering unpacked
milk, detergents or other goods, hotel-
keepers avoiding single-serving packag-
ing at their breakfast buffet... and many
more. The 2010 Fair of practical utopias
aims at putting a strong focus on a
specific territory of 700,000 people and
1,000 Km2 – making this hidden sus-
tainable community visible, both to its
members and to the public.

Mining resource or
social issue?
Interview with Susanna Anderegg

In the past few years, the emerging
economies’ steadily growing demand
for minerals has made the price of
metals increase, attracting important
transnational companies in the min-
ing industry. Peru has registered a
real boom in the field, as a favorable
fiscal and political regime has made
exploiting natural resources easier to
the point that the country is now one
of the major producers of metals in
the world. Unfortunately, as is more
and more often the case, the availabil-
ity of a resource that other countries
want to buy can become a problem
for the balance of the place where
that resource is found. Moreover, as
regards the mining industry, the huge
economic advantage for those working
in the field can turn into a huge social
and environmental cost for the poorest
parts of the local population – which, in
Peru, mainly depend on agriculture and
farming. On top of requiring vast quan-
tities of water and land, with obvious
risks for the local ecosystems, mining
companies unfortunately have a track
record in human rights violations, with
many episodes remaining unknown
because of the difficult communications
with remote areas where they happen.
In the Chumbivilcas and Cotabambas
provinces, respectively in the Cusco
and Apurímac regions, this process has
just begun. Exploration licenses have
been given and some international
companies have started mining opera-
tions in areas where the local popula-
tion is often completely unaware of the
environmental risks entailed by mining
and about the rights it can claim.
The Center for Andean Development,
Education and Promotion “José Maria
Arguedas” (Cadep Jma) – an NGO
based in Cusco that has been operat-
ing in the Andean territory since the
1970s to protect the indigenous popu-
lations’ rights and identity – is tackling
the problem. The projects developed
by Cadep Jma aim to widen the indig-
enous and “campesino” populations’
participation in local political affairs. As
regards the mining sector in particular,
Cadep Jma is active in the Chumbivil-
cas and Cotabambas provinces, where
the goal is to strengthen the political
mechanisms through which the popu-
lation can claim its citizenship rights,
so that mining companies will take
social and environmental responsibil-
ity; the mining industry must, in fact,
respect the population’s development
process, which cannot do without ac-
cess to clean water and environmental
integrity – especially since mother
Earth (Pachamama) has a strong role
in local culture as well as in everyday
life. Thus, to strengthen the popula-
tion’s ability to monitor, negotiate and
influence mining companies’ projects,
Cadep Jma promotes local manage-
ment committees that make sure
certain social and environmental values
are respected; starts lobbying cam-
paigns and initiatives for environmental
safeguard and improvement (environ-
mental impact evaluations, reforesta-
tion programs, etc.); and builds consen-
sus at grassroots and local government
level about the risks and impacts of
mining, and about the need for a new
proposal for development that is not
compromised by companies’ irrespon-
sible attitude. Well-aware that mining
also represents a chance for develop-
ment, the center does not intend to
contrast it by default, but to create a
situation in which the local population
can manage the externalities it brings
autonomously, fully aware of its rights.

Immensee has worked in international
cooperation for South America for some
time, and has focused in particular
on issues tied to mining for years. For
almost three years, she has supported
Cadep Jma in its projects for the min-
ería area.
Susanna, how can mining be a threat?
Mining often uses chemical substances
such as cyanide and oxides. Extracting
raw minerals from the rock is a com-
plex process, and using these sub-
stances you risk they end up in drains
or vaporize in the air and fall back on
the ground. Everyone knows that min-
ing can contaminate ground water,
affecting agriculture and farming as
well as drinkability of water itself. What
happened in La Oroya (a mining area
in the Huancayo region, one of the 10
most polluted in the world – editor’s
note) is a solid example of this.
IB: Is the population aware of these
dangers?
SA: The general level of information
is not high, although there are a few
people, such as leaders or managers,
who have participated in informational
meetings and conferences. Most of
the population only has fragmentary
and superficial information: they can
only guess from what they have heard
around that there are conflicts going
on, or that mining is not only a good
thing, but bears negative consequenc-
es too.
IB: What can we do to make the mining
industry take responsibility?
SA: It’s mainly up to mining companies
themselves: there are precise national
and international behavior rules for the
sector. Companies have to commit to
doing their job responsibly, respecting
the population’s rights – including the
right to not be deceived, but informed
in an accurate and transparent way –
and the current laws, using the best
technology available (although that
might cost more) to avoid contamina-
tion dangers as much as possible. They
have to make that commitment to safe-
guard the population. However, I think
the responsibility is of both the industry
and its managers and the local govern-
ments, which must make an effort to
make everyone follow the rules and to
prosecute any violation compromising
the environment, transparency towards
the local population or the safety of
workers.
What has already been done, and how
important are environmental communi-
cation and participation in all of this?
We started information campaigns two
years ago, mainly in the Cotabambas
area: we started to inform the young-
sters in the capital, Haquira, and last
year we extended to rural communities
so they have the chance to understand
the different aspects of mining, the
processes it entails and what they can
do to influence them. One of our goals
is that people get to know their rights
and start to enforce them against min-
ing companies. Secondly, we started
putting together and informing envi-
ronmental management committees,
whose representatives can act for
the whole district, gaining negotiat-
ing power. These committees must be
able to coordinate with municipalities,
make sound proposals to improve the
environment and, if necessary, build
consensus and influence decisions on
the local, regional, national and inter-
national level, in case of human rights
violations or strong negative impact on
the environment. At the same time, we
are supporting the communities hit by
damages caused by mining, responding
to their requests as we receive them.
We are coordinating local discussion
and planning tables, which interact
with thematic ones about the environ-
ment or mining activities, the municipal
ones, those open by various other or-
ganizations, even at regional level with
the table about development and min-
ing activity in Abancay (capital of the
Apurímac region – editor’s note). At the
same time we have opened contacts,
especially in Europe, in case we need
to start an international action. Finally,
although it is not highly developed yet,
we do research: understanding and
analyzing the needs and studying the
mining activity more in depth is impor-
tant for the work we have done and are
still doing.

Now more than ever,
the future is Personal

The way technology is spreading, the de-
velopment of increasingly sophisticated
devices and the creation of increasingly

personalized products and services gives
us a vision of what the future society will
be like. The concept of ‘personal’ now
includes all of our daily activities, from
consumers co-designing with compa-
nies the products they will use and the
popularity of the ‘community’ concept to
profile mining (from “10 crucial consum-
er trends for 2010”, trendwatching.com –
editor’s note), and to managing our own
image and the flow of information that
– whether we like it or not – we dissemi-
nate during our whole lives. This trend,
when put in relation with the United Na-
tions’ estimates that by 2050 three quar-
ters of the world’s population will live in
urban areas, provides a scenario for the
job awaiting all those who are supposed
to come up with, design and produce
products and services aimed at closing
the functional gap between man, ma-
chine and the surrounding (and increas-
ingly often urban) environment. Falling in
this category, PCVs (Personal Commut-
ing Vehicles – a name that intentionally
recalls the Eighties’ personal computers)
are a new type of vehicle. Just like the
personal computer revolutionized the
concept of informatics itself, making it
accessible for personal and home use,
PCVs intend to revolutionize urban and
suburban transportation with a new con-
ception of streets and individual mobility.
In May, the Progressive Automotive X
Prize will open – an international compe-
tition organized in the United States by
the X Prize Foundation, exclusively for
hi-efficiency and low-emission vehicles
– with the goal of inspiring a new gen-
eration of highly efficient vehicles, able
to offer consumer a real alternative to
private means of transportation that are
