HPE Unit Plan

Unit Overview
Unit Title
Exploring Hitting Sports
Unit Summary
The students will be exposed to many hitting sports. This will be in the 5 weeks of PE, students
will play, get to know and explore hitting sports and games; cricket, hockey, badminton,
tennis, squash, table tennis. This will be through individually skill practice, working in
pairs/groups and most of all playing quick fun games. The students will be learning the hitting
skill with different bats and rackets, refining their techniques and hitting method.

Student Objectives/Learning Outcomes
Lesson 1: Students are introduced to lots of hitting techniques and hitting equipment. They
learn to use all of the equipment safely.

Lesson 2: Hockey; rules – slide the ball not ‘hit’.

Students will learn the basic rules of hockey and how to use the stick. The students will play 4
Goal Hockey and Sockey.
Lesson 3: Cricket; students will play ‘speed involvement cricket’ in groups of 6 (outside) then

Lesson 4: Squash/Tennis: Students will rotate games playing in many different combinations.

Lesson 5: Students return to one of the sports and use their skills in a practical way through
playing a whole class game.

Assessment Summary
The assessment of students will be completed mostly by observation of the students to see if
they are able to ‘hit’/make contact with the ball/puck/shuttle during the lessons. The students
will also assess how they think they went with hitting.
Unit Details
Prerequisite Skills
Basic hitting.

Instructional Procedures
Lesson 1: A. Tell the students the rules for when I am teaching; what is expected of them,
listening strategies that I will use, class rules and structures.
B. Explain to the students how the equipment is set up and how it is to be used.
C. Show the students the correct way of using all the equipment; how to hold, use,
safety involved and rules for each set of hitting equipment.
D. Students are to work in small groups to use all of the equipment; to practice,
learn the position of hands, body and head and to finally get used to using the equipment.
E. Students will help packing up all the equipment.
F. Students will be given the ‘hitting students resource’ page which will be stuck in
their PE books and filled in sometime during the unit.

Lesson 2: A. Show the students the correct hitting technique for a hockey stick; where the stick
is allowed to lift to, slide not hit, push through the hit.
B. Play ‘4 Goal Hockey’.
C. Split class into 4 teams. Line up in a square. 1 stick,2 cones per team and 1 ball.
D. Give each student a number, to play call number and the winning person gets a
goal.
E. Play game until everyone gets at least 1 turn.
F. Split the teams in half and they play ‘Sockey’ (mini hockey). Winning team to 5.
G. If there is time rotate teams.
H. Pack up.

Lesson 3: A. Show hitting technique for cricket.


B. Groups of 6 play ‘speed involvement cricket’, two batsman, 4 fielders (rotate
bowler). 5 hits each – no one gets out, runs can be counted.
C. Whole class indoor cricket. Class makes up rules. Two teams.

Lesson 4: A. Show the students the techniques of holding the racket (same for squash and
tennis).
B. Explain to the students that everyone will rotate into both games.
C. Students are to work in pairs or groups of four to play games against each other.
D. Students rotate through the courts anti clockwise, every ten or fifteen minutes.
E. No scoring involved.
f. Pack up.

Lesson 5: A. Students are given the opportunity to chose one of the sports they have already
learnt the skills of to play a game.
