Important outcomes of Australia Awards Scholarships are:
1. Indonesian alumni are using their new knowledge, skills and attitudes to contribute positively in their
professional field;
2. Indonesian alumni are using their new knowledge, skills and attitudes to contribute positively in their
communities;
3. Indonesian alumni have, or support, links with Australia, Australian organisations, or Australians;
Please comment on why your nominee should be considered for a scholarship in relation to the outcomes
above (approximately 400 words):
Aceh, who suffered from tsunami disaster and long term armed-conflict, has been making its way to be a better
develop province. 10 years after tsunami, many new industries and factories were established. However, this
advancement pose a problem. The industrial development is not accompained by adequate Occupational
Health and Safety (OHS) systems which put many workers in Aceh to work under poor working condition. One
of the reason behind this problem is the lack of OHS expert in Aceh.
Based on condition, I nominate Ikhwan Muhammad to pursue doctoral program in Public Health with
specialization in OHS. Ikhwan is a medical doctor with postgraduate degree in OHS - the only person with the
degree currently in Aceh. With his medical degree and clinical experiences, I believe Ikhwan will be able to
conduct a distinct research in OHS.
Ikhwan was a former Australian Development Scholarship (ADS) awardee in 2012. He finished his Master of
OHS in The University of Adelaide in 2013. He has mantained link with ADS alumni in Aceh and with ADS
awardee across Indonesia and abroad. In addition, he also has link to the professor and lecturer in the
University of Adelaide. During his study, he also joined various club and communities, including PPIA-SA
(Australia-Indonesia Student Association), ISSUA (Islamic Student Society of The University of Adelaide), and
MIIAS (Indonesian Islamic Society of South Australia). Furthermore, he was elected as the president of ISSUA
with promoting multiculturalism and tolerance in religion as his main goals.
In Indonesia, Ikhwan is an active member of IDI (Indonesian Medical Doctor Association). Beside his work as a
lecturer in our university, Ikhwan also work as an emergency doctor in a goverment hospital's emergency
facility. With his expertise in OHS, other medical doctors who work in industrial environment often ask his help
to design OHS program. In addition, Ikhwan often share his visions about OHS in Aceh in the local newspaper.
He also share his knowledge through his blog "www.konsultasik3.com", which contains OHS information for
public and for undergraduate students.
With his extensive research and study experience in Australia, I believe Ikhwan will be able to pursue a
doctoral degree without problem. After he finished his doctoral degree, he will be prepared to teach public
health postgraduate student in our university, the only public health postgraduate degree available in Aceh. He
will also be prepared to conduct researches and projects which hopefully will improve the working condition of
Acehnese workers in the long term. Sooner or later, the complicated problem of OHS in Aceh will be
progressively worse. Therefore, the need of a medical practitioner with a comprehensive understanding in
OHS is critically urgent.
