Fifth Sunday of Lent

THE NEW COVENANT
When the prophet Jeremiah coined the term "new covenant" he was actually doing something
quite radical. For the Jewish people, there was only one covenant, the one made between the Lord God
and Israel through Moses at Mount Sinai. For Jeremiah to suggest that God would somehow supersede the
covenant with a new one would have sounded audacious to Jewish ears. But in this way he is a predecessor of Jesus who, in
the Gospel of John, is continually portrayed as superseding the past, establishing the reign of God in a new way. And in
today's Gospel passage, Jesus the "new covenant" speaks the language of his "new commandment" of love when he tells of
the dying grain of wheat, and of our own need to die to self in order to be raised with Christ. As Lent ends and we prepare
to enter into Holy Week, the dying grain of wheat serves as an excellent symbol of the kind of dying and self-sacrifice to
which disciples are called, a symbol of that new covenant written deep within our hearts.

Pat and Al Updegraff

This week we would like to thank Pat and
Al Updegraff for their long and dedicated
service to our parish. Al and Pat have been
married nearly fifty-five years (this coming
May), have been parishioners for the last twenty, and have
four daughters: Linda, Nancy, Julianne (dec) and Stephanie, as well as two grandchildren.
Both have volunteered for the Fiesta in the hospitality
room, but Pat has concentrated on her volunteer work in
Religious Ed. She focuses on what she thinks is most importantthe kids, and spends two or three days preparing
for each class. She always prays before class, and she tells
her students, I am the vessel, God fills me up, and I pour
out the milk, the gift, and they need to pay attention.
She has also donated her time to babysitting, the Unity
Center, where she works with and for the homeless, and as
the Story Lady at Monroe School, where she is known as
Miss Pat. She especially enjoys the Unity Centers Back-toSchool-Night, where children in need receive a school
supplies.
Pat says, My heart is so with the children. Thats why I
love the childrens Mass (10:00 a.m. Sunday Liturgy). I
wish we had it for our children. Dont ever forget that Religious Education is important. The Catholic school is not
the only way to reach our children, and those who teach
the public school children each week do a great service. Pat
wants to support these children, some of whom are in such
desperate need. For some kids, its kind of rough on
them.
Al is Pats supporter in all things, he helps her set up,
follows directions and insists he only does what Pat tells
him to.

Scripture Meditation
Tuesdays 7:00 to 9:00 pm
Parish Library
Meditation is an inner journey of silence, stillness and
simplicity, and is the missing contemplative dimension of
much of Christian life today. Meditation is a pilgrimage
to our own center, to our own heart If we are faithful
and patient, meditation will bring us into deeper and
deeper realms of silence. It is in this silence that we are
led into the mystery of the eternal silence of God.
