NAVIGATING IN RESTRICTED VISIBILITY

[ To be used by OOW whenever visibility reduces 3 n.m. or as defined in Masters standing and
current Orders and logged in Movement Book per watch. ]

Inform Master immediately, when visibility is dropping / has dropped to 3 n.m., or to his
specified distance, if higher. For long stretches of Restricted visiblity ( more than 6 hours), It is NOT mandatory for
master to remain on bridge at all times, in order to maintain compliance with Rest hours Master may reschedule Second mate
and Third mate watches to 6 on - 6 off, so that Master and Chief Mate are available to for assisting on bridge as and when
required and Master shall study the passage plan and prevailing circumstances and Judciously decide when he is required to be
on bridge and when chief mate can substitute him , Ofcourse in all circumstances when OOW or Pilot feel that Master presence is
required he may be summoned immediately . Non compliance if any to maintain rest hour to be logged with reasons and NCR
sent to UOSM .

Instruct Engine Room watch, or Duty Engineer when UMS, to commence preparation for
speed reduction and give SBE and speed reduction, (consult master )

Changeover to hand steering.


Post additional Look Outs as required. Provide Look Outs with binoculars.
Commence fog (sound) signals.
Check navigation lights on and functioning.
Careful visual and aural Look Out to be maintained, as per Col. Regs.
Both Radars and ARPA on, with observation and tracking of all targets.
Switch on echo sounder, if in sounding depths.
Verify vessels position and log.
VHF watch maintained on Ch. 16 and the local working channel, if applicable.
Remove anchor lashings, if vessel within anchoring depths, consultation Master)
Stop any noisy work that may interfere with keeping a proper listening watch.
Have all water-tight doors shut.
Keep in mind blind and shadow sectors of the radars. Suppress heading marker frequently to
check for echoes on heading line. Keep one Radar on longer range, or change up range
frequently, to get good distant warning of potentially dangerous traffic

Note:
1. Never use VHF as the only mean for collision avoidance, unless vessel has positively identified each other
using AIS
2. Mere Presence of the master on the bridge does not relieve the OOW of his duties unless the Master
specifically states that he is 'Taking - over the Con' OOW to continue advising the Master as to hazard.
Note :Display this check list, Post it in wheelhouse, and ensure Log entry made in every watch, as applicable
