OnWednesdaymorningthisweek,ourServiceLearningCoordinatorsinthe
ElementarySchool,IngeStrangeandSophieWaddington,ledthefaculty
andteaching/educa onassistantsinalearningac vitydesignedto
developgreaterunderstandingofwhatServiceLearningmeansforchildren
agedthreetotenyears.Partofthediscussioncenteredontheideaoflevels
ofchildrenspar cipa oninServiceLearningexperiences.UsingHarts
LadderofPar cipa onasaframeworkforourconversa ons,teachersand
TAstalkedaboutthekindsofprojectsthatwouldbeappropriateand
engagingforourstudentsaswestrivetoincreasetheirempathy,provide
themwithopportuni estotransfertheirskillsandknowledgepurposefully,
andmakechoicesthatarehealthyforthemselves,forothersandforthe
environment.

Asadultswecanat mesunderes matethecompetenceofchildren,and


takecontrolwiththeendresultthatthechildrenhaveli leunderstanding
oftheissuesathandortheirac ons.Thereare,however,manyprojects
designedandrunbyadults,withchildrenhavingpredeterminedroles,that
areveryposi veexperiencesforbothadultsandchildren.OnWednesday
welookedatthedierentwaysinwhichwecansupportouryoungest
studentsatISMinge nginvolvedandcontribu ng,andmovefromthe
moretokenis ctomoregenuinemodelsofpar cipa on,wherechildren
areconsulted,informedanddecisionmakingisshared.Indoingso,wewere
remindedbyourteacherleaders,andbytheworkofRogerHart*,thatthe
designofchildrenspar cipa onshouldnotbeconsideredasasimple
measurings ckofitsquality.Wehaveseensomewonderfulservice
learningeventsrecentlythatreflectavarietyofmodelsoflearningsuchas
theRecyclingExpoinKindergartenwithPCFandPapayaAcademy,the
PreschoolPlan ngCommunityService,andGrade4studentsjoiningMSand
HSstudentsinParanaquethisweekend,forabeachcleanupandmangrove
plan ng.Thisweek,theEShaspar cipatedinNoImpactWeekwiththemes
ofNature,ReducingWaste,SavingWater,EnergyUsageandWellbeing
framingtheServiceLearning.Ourgoalistomaketheseexperiencessafe,
collabora ve,developmentallyappropriate,meaningfulandinclusive,in
waysthatstrengthenourcommunityandbringchildrensideastolife.

ES No Impact Week
Thank you to all families for helping to support No Impact week at ISM with conversations at home. The kids had a
very successful week with many different grade level projects happening throughout the school. Happy Earth Day!
