FromWikipedia,thefreeencyclopedia

TheUniversalMobileTelecommunicationsSystem(UMTS)isathirdgenerationmobilecellularsystem
fornetworksbasedontheGSMstandard.Developedandmaintainedbythe3GPP(3rdGeneration
PartnershipProject),UMTSisacomponentoftheInternationalTelecommunicationsUnionIMT2000
standardsetandcompareswiththeCDMA2000standardsetfornetworksbasedonthecompeting
cdmaOnetechnology.UMTSuseswidebandcodedivisionmultipleaccess(WCDMA)radioaccess
technologytooffergreaterspectralefficiencyandbandwidthtomobilenetworkoperators.
UMTSspecifiesacompletenetworksystem,whichincludestheradioaccessnetwork(UMTSTerrestrial
RadioAccessNetwork,orUTRAN),thecorenetwork(MobileApplicationPart,orMAP)andthe
authenticationofusersviaSIM(subscriberidentitymodule)cards.
ThetechnologydescribedinUMTSissometimesalsoreferredtoasFreedomofMobileMultimediaAccess
(FOMA)[1]or3GSM.
UnlikeEDGE(IMTSingleCarrier,basedonGSM)andCDMA2000(IMTMultiCarrier),UMTSrequires
newbasestationsandnewfrequencyallocations.
