PROGRAM FOCUS/ STUDENT BENEFITS:
The objectives of this course is to present traceability technologies (barcodes, RFID, NFC, etc.). Specialists in this domain will
present how these technologies work, how they are used as well as their applications.
The first part of this course provides some basic on RFID technologies. It helps understanding the electronic solutions
implementing RFID tags. It outlines a practical way for industrial applications. A short history will be presented, followed by a
review of existing technologies. We then discuss in more detail the problems of the power supply of passive tags, solutions
implemented for communication with readers and normative aspects. Finally, major technological trends will be presented. This
first part will close with some practical sessions on HF and UHF technologies.
The second part of this course is to present the main points to consider for a successful integration of new communication
solutions. These points range from project management to the use optimization and simulation to evaluate the return on
investment. Feedbacks will be presented, followed by discussions: per businesses and markets, open/closed loop technology
choices, as well as obstacles and limitations. Case studies will be presented in several areas (health, distribution, inventory
management, aviation, etc.).

Pedagogical Group Type: 3A Profession
Pedagogical Group Name: Projects
Duration per student: 90 hours (3 weeks)
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The objective of these projects is to get the students working on a specific topic (i.e. optimization algorithms, RFID coupled with
optimization algorithms, GPS, etc.) that requires programming and implementation. The goal is to lead them implementing
practical concepts and algorithms seen during the class lessons. In general the asked deliverable is a demonstrator. In order to do
so, students work in group (usually groups are composed of at most 3 students). A supervisor is assigned to each group. This one
is in charge of clarifying the subject with the students, the frequency of their meetings, the reports to send him. A specification
document is presented in the first quarter of the year. At the end of the project (end of March), a defense of their project is
organized. Students present to a jury their solutions on their case study. We have to note that project presentations are in English.

PREREQUISITES:
Programming, optimization skills, concepts in new technologies i.e. RFID, NFC

EVALUATION:
There are two grades that consolidated the final grades:
1. Project defense: Student groups are evaluated on the relevance of their solutions, the quality of their
presentations and the English language and the given demonstrators. This is the first part of the grade.
2. Report: The second part of the grade is obtained on the evaluation of their report.

Pedagogical Group Type: 3A Profession

__________________________________________________________________________________________________
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
A secure element is a tamper-resistant platform meant for securely hosting applications and sensitive data such as government certificates, cryptographic keys,
biometric data, pin counter, amount of money counters etc. Malicious users aim to get access to these secrets by performing attacks on these secure elements.
The first step of such attacks consists in getting as much as possible information about the chip (i.e. public specifications, images and floorplan, etc.). Then, several
techniques are used, alone or combined, to try to get access to hidden secrets. A first technique consists in bypassing software protections by using logical
attacks (i.e. exploiting a bug, executing an ill-formed sequence of commands, etc.). The second technique, called Side Channel Analysis (SCA), exploits the fact
that some physical values or ``side channels'', such as power consumption, electromagnetic radiation or computation time, of a circuit depend on the secret value.
The third kind of technique, called fault attacks (FA), consists in disrupting the circuit's behavior by using a laser beam or voltage, clock and electromagnetic
glitches. The aim is to alter the correct progress of the algorithm and, by analyzing the deviation of the corrupted behavior w.r.t. to the original one, secret
information can be retrieved.
In this course, the use of secure circuits in trusted systems is shortly described. Then, the side-channel and fault attack on these circuits are detailed. At last, the
principles of hardware and software protections against these threats are described.

Pedagogical Group Type: 3A Opening
Pedagogical Group Name: Photovoltaic Industry
Duration per student: 30 Hr (10 S)
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

In the following decades, the world is going to experiment an important transformation of its energy production and delivery
processes: rarefaction of conventional oil, limitation on coal usage due to its impact on green house gases and climate change, development of renewable energies
and handling of their inherent intermittence by the implementation of smartgrids. Among the renewable energies, photovoltaic (PV) is acting as a very promising
challenger, since it experiments a continued and exponential growth of its installed capacities since more than 20 years, with annual growth rates higher than 35%
(60% in average over the last 4 years), and with an actual world installed capacity above 100GW. The PV energy has many advantages compared to other
renewable energies: reliability (20-50 years), non polluting technologies, very low carbon content, ease of installation and use, good spatial distribution of the
resource (sunlight). However its cost has been a problem for a long time, and the different governments of the planet have had to subsidize it. Cost reductions have
been drastic in the past years, and the PV industry is now close to being subsidies-free self sufficient in many countries, the so-called grid parity. It will probably
continue its fast growth in the future, without relying on dried up public financial resources, and will be a key player in the upcoming energy landscape. The goal
of this course is to present as an introduction the energy physical and geopolitical context, the potential of PV energy, the problems yet to be solved. Then the core
of the course will be dedicated to PV cells and modules, how they work, the physical effects involved, the different technologies and types of installations, how
they are fabricated and how they are used. Lectures and exercices will alternate in this part. The second part of the course will be dedicated to practical works, both
simulations and lab experiments, and visits. The first visit will bring us to the CIGS thin film PV enterprise Nexcis, which is an SME located in the Rousset zone
close to Gardanne, is a strong research partner of the CMP, and is also strongly involved in the organization of this course. The second visit will last a full day, and
will take place first at the solar farm of the village Les Mes, located 1h drive north of Gardanne. It is one of the biggest (and the most beautiful) PV site in France,
with 200ha and 90MW of PV capacities. Very large electrical powers are handled in this plant, and the electrical installations will be shown and explained by an
engineer from Siemens. The second and last visit will take place at the CEA Cadarache, where an important project called City of the Energies is bringing to the
site many new PV and CSP (thermodynamic Concentrated Solar Power) installations, in addition to the existing historical experiments on PV characterization,
with a focus on concentrated technologies.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

PREREQUISITES: Basic knowledge on electronics: diode characteristics, series and parallel connections, electrical circuits operations. Some elementary
knowledge on semiconductor physics: energy bands, electrons and holes, photon absorption. Some experience with electronics laboratory apparatus: SMU, I-V
recording and plotting. Some experience with a simulation software.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

GRADING:

A 2h test will end the course, and will mainly check the capabilities of the student to:
understand how a PV cell and a PV module work and make some calculations on physical characteristics such as open circuit voltage, shortcircuit current, efficiency, max power, fill factor
know some orders of magnitude on important energy parameters related to solar energy
have a clear understanding on the semiconductor physics underlying the PV cell operation: energy bands, Fermi level, P-N junction in
equilibrium and under excitation (voltage or light), transport effects, light absorption and recombination
