Access Channel

Used by Mobile Station (Reverse Link)

Request (initiate communication with the BTS)
Response (in response to the paging channel)
Has a fixed data rate of 4800 bps
Each Access Channel is associated with only one Paging
Channel.
Up to 32 Access Channel (0-31) are supported per Paging
Channel.
Message attempts are randomized to reduce probability of
collision.
The frame duration is 20 ms.
Unique identification by Long Code.

Paging Channel

It is read after Sync Channel has been read by the Mobile

Configuration Message are sent ever 1.28 Seconds.
There are 6 Configuration messages and may occur in any
order:
Access Parameter Message: configuration setting for
transmitting on Access Channel.
System Parameter Message: configuration include
registration, handoff threshold, search window etc.
CDMA Channel List Message: channel information for
hashing.
Extended System Parameter Message (optional):
network, phone (IMSI) related configuration, also
Dynamic HO configuration.
Extended Neighbor List Message: neighbor list of
current PN is sent over.
Global Service Redirection Message: used for multi
carrier boundary sites.

Access Parameters

Access Procedure: Call setup steps consist of Access

Attempts
Access Attempt: The entire process of sending the access
probe and receiving (or failing to receive) an acknowledgment
Access Channel: A reverse CDMA Channel used by the
mobile to send signaling message such as origination, page
response. The Access Channel is a slotted random access
channel.
Access Channel Slot: The timing of access probes and
access probe sequence is expressed in terms of Access
Channel Slot
Access Probe: Each transmission in the access attempt.
Each probe consists of a preamble and a message capsule.
Access Probe Sequence: A sequence of one or more access
probes. The same Access Channel message is transmitted in
every access probe of an access attempt.

Access Parameter (Continued )

ACC_TMO*:

Time to wait for BTS ACK for the Access

Probe TA = (2+ACC_TMO) x 80ms
PROBE_BKOFF*(RT): Random time delay for the next probe, (0 to
1+PROBE_BKOFF) slot
BKOFF*(RS):
Random time delay for the next probe
sequence, (0 to 1+BKOFF) slot
MAX_REQ_SEQ*:
Max number of access probe sequence for
access request (e.g. orig)
MAX_RSP_SEQ*:
Max number in one page response access
probe sequence
NUM_STEP*:
Max allowable number of access probes in
one access sequence
PWR_STEP* (PI):
Power increment between consecutive probes
NOM_PWR*:
Nominal transmit power offset used by the
mobile in the open loop power estimation
INIT_PWR*:
Initial power offset for access

Access Failure Reasons

The mobile never generates any probe

No BTS Acknowledgment to the Access Probe
No Channel Assignment Message
Time out waiting for 2 consecutive good frames after CAM
Time out waiting for BTS ACK to the preamble on the traffic
No Service Connect Message
No BTS Acknowledgment to the Service Connect Complete
Message
Traffic Channel Confirmation Failure
