Fractions, Ratios, Decimals and Percentages

The Fractions, Ratios, Decimals and Percentages workbook is aimed at improving students understandin
equivalence of these values. It has several interactive features.
The grid can be made any size from 1x1 to 10x10. This is done by clicking on the spinners to the right of
underneath the grid.
To change the fraction of the grid shaded red, just click on each individual square in the grid. This toggles
between red and white.

Each of the values, numerator, denominator, percentage, decimal and each side of the ratio can be shown
independently. To do this, just click on the cell to toggle between show and hide.

The fraction and ratio will be shown unsimplified when the squares in the grid have changed colour or whe
has changed. To simplify the fraction and ratio, simply click on the simplify button. The fraction will only b
unsimplified when a square is changed or the grid is changed.

This function will bring up the windows calculator on the screen. To open the calculator, click the calc butt
function will not work if the calc program is not installed in the default directory. It is best to close the calc
you have finished using it or you may end up opening several calc programs at once.

This is a list of possible uses in the classroom. The resource has been designed to be flexible and interac
mainly for use on interactive whiteboards, though not exclusively. This list is by no means exhaustive, it is
ideas.
Get the students to divide up a mini whiteboard into 4, one section each for the fraction, ratio, decimal and
Show them the grid with some red squares shaded and all the values hidden. Ask them to write each par
whiteboard. Reveal the answers and discuss. This activity could be restricted just to fractions and ratio o
decimals, etc.

Show the students the workbook with no red squares shaded and one or more of the fraction, ratio, decim
percentage showing. Ask students how many squares need to be shaded to make 25% for example. Ge
come to the board to add the squares to check. Repeat for different grid sizes and values.

Show the students the workbook with no red squares shaded and the fraction showing. Ask students how
need to be shaded to make 1/2 for example. Get one student to come to the board to add the squares, lo
fraction the click simplify to check. Repeat for different grid sizes, then for different fractions. Ask questio
"Can we shade in 1/3 of the grid? If not why not?"

In a computer lab, get the students to open up the workbook. Ask them to show the fraction and ratio cell
investigate the relationship between the fractions and ratios for various grid sizes and a different number o
shaded. Tell them that they can use the simplify button or calculator whenever they want. Tell them that t
write, present or discuss their findings. Ask the what the simplify button does, etc. This activity could also
investigate the relationship between fraction and decimal, etc.
