Problem solving essay

Loneliness of D02 students in HUT

Mother Teresa said “The most terrible poverty is loneliness, and the feeling of

being unloved.” Do you have that “terrible poverty”? I think the answer wouldn’t

be “No” if you are a student in the class D02 – K53 of Hanoi University of

Technology. Becoming students, becoming more mature, you have to face many

problems by yourself. At this age, you often have complex thoughts and easily feel

lonely in this busy life. It seems that the busier you are, the loneliner you feel. We

think that the loneliness is a obviously normal part of life. In fact, now loneliness

is a big problem to you, D02 students, and it can cause many serious

consequences.

There are many problems with loneliness. Probably all of us ever felt lonely,

but do we know what loneliness is? Exactly, loneliness is an abstact concept and

each person maybe has their own one. According to Wikipedia, loneliness is “a

feeling in which perple experience a strong sense of emptiness and solitude. It is

compared to feeling empty, unwanted and unimportant.” You can see that

loneliness is a universal phenonmenon and emotion of human, including all

genders, ages, nationalities and so on at any time, anywhere. Most of you are

students far from home, so you may lack of family’s love or have few friends.
Therefore, you can understand why in the class, you seem to be sullen, gloomy

and don’t concentrate on their studying.

The most notable thing is the serious consequences which loneliness can cause

to you. Research has shown that loneliness can impact stress, health and

immunity. It makes stress levels increase that can lead to the depression and

autism. When it reachs to the high levels, people can have a negative thought

that death is the only escape to loneliness, so they can commit suicide. Moreover,

loneliness can cause the high blood pressure, illnesses such as heart disease. It also

can decreasing memory, brain function and predispose us to premature aging

(BBC news). According to Current Direction in Psychological Science, lonely

people feel helpless, threatened and fail to seek help. Therefore, loneliness is quite

dangerous. However, it appears more common today and it’s a normal condition

experieced by as many as 25% of the population at any one time (BBC news).

Now that you know more about the loneliness and its consequences to human

and it has a bad effect on you at present. What should we can do about it? It's

possible to overcome loneliness, if you are really determined to do so. You should

be friendly, open your mind and think in a positive way. You can make yourself

busy with some interesting activities. For example, you can dance, travel or take

part in some guitar, music, English clubs at Hanoi university of Technology, such

as: PEC, MIC... Involving with the comunity, you will not feel lonely any more.

There are some efficient solutions you can use to reduce and avoid loneliness.
Some might be more effective than the others, so to help yourself, you will need to

choose the best solution for you to become positive and foget the loneliness.

A simple way is to get a pet. Pets, especially dogs and cats, carry so many

benefits, and preventing loneliness is one of them. It can give you the benefits of

altruism and companionship, connecting you with other people, walking a dog

opens you up to a community of other dog-walkers (Elizabeth Meakins) .

Additionally, pets can be good friends of you, provide unconditional love, which

can be a great salve for loneliness. However, if getting a pet, you must have

enough time and love to care for it. Besides, not everyone loves pets, even some

are allergic to them. Sometimes, pets can make troubles to you, such as: their fur,

dirtiness and so on.

Another way I’ve tried to cope with loneliness is spending money. In general,

it is thought that spending money can have some beneficial effects. It can help you

release the loneliness, feel comfortable and forget gradually the loneliness. On the

other hand, this solution is quite costly and it can cause an opposite effect. After

shopping, finding that you are out of money, you may feel more stressed. As a

consequence, if you are spending money, you should bring a little money or

consider buying things causing you to be social with other people. In addition,

you should choose cheap shopping places, for instance: night markets or markets

for student in Phung Khoang or Cau Giay...

Volunteering is also a good solution for your loneliness. Becoming a

volunteer can help you find more meaning in your life, bring greater happiness and

life satisfaction, as well as decreasing loneliness. At your university, Hanoi

University of Technology, there are many volunteer teams of different falcuties

and institutes that you can take part in, such as: Faculty of Electrical Engineering,

Faculty of Foreign Language... I have joined the volunteer team of Faculty of

Electrical Engineering, finding some positive changes in myself. I have more

friends, becoming more self-confident, easy-going and active. By contrast,

volunteering takes you much time to do with many activities at university or in

society. Besides, you need to be quite enthusiastic, if not you can not be a real

volunteer.

Learning to be alone is the most necessary and effective way when you often

feel lonely. According to Elizabeth Meakins and Janet Gorman, if you are

someone who panics when left alone, and constantly seeks others out to avoid

inner loneliness, it might be worth spending some time learning how to feel

relaxed in your own company. It may also enable you to focus on the kind of

person you really are, and what you really want to do. Techniques, can be a little

complex like yoga, meditation, or even easy only like keeping a journal, help you

to relax and have a calmer sense of yourself. It's worth spending time

concentrating on something that really interests you. Once you can face yourself,
your relationships with other people will improve. You will find you have more

interest in them and the world around you, which they will respond to.

Briefly, to you, D02 students, loneliness can influence on you much and can

cause many problems with your mentality and health. There are some effective

solution for this problem for you. You can get a pet, spend money to release your

stress caused by loneliness. Also, you can go volunteer or learn to be alone to train

yourself with problems. All of these ways can help you cope with your lonelinees.

Although sometimes you needs some time on your own, loneliness is still an

unbidden guest. You should know how to control your emotion, especially a

complex emotion like loneliness. And if you feel lonely, be calm to beat it. The

previous solutions that I mentioned can be effective to you. “After all, tomorrow is

another day” (Magaret Mitchell). It's important to have something to look forward

to each day, so start a new day by refreshing yourself and loneliness will never

come to you.
